I was driving between 60 and 65 and the truck wouldn't slow down even I tried to brake the RPM gauge was at 5000 RPM and the truck was forcing me forward I put it in neutral and it still was accelerating like the engine was being revved up. I managed to pull out of traffic and killed the engine but it wouldn't shut off I took the keys out and after about 15 seconds it finally wentoff. I tried restarting it several times and it still kept accelerating to the max everyone time. I checked the accelerations cable and it was not stuck.

The contact owns a 2000 GMC Sierra 1500. On January 20, 2008, while driving 65 mph with the cruise control activated, the contact attempted to decelerate, but the vehicle failed to respond. The vehicle accelerated to 80 mph and the contact called the highway patrol for assistance. They informed him to apply the brakes, but that did not work. They then informed him to pull off on the next exit. The contact exited the highway, pulled into a parking lot, and circled around until the vehicle decelerated to 35 mph. He was then able to shut off the vehicle. He waited several minutes before restarting the vehicle and drove around the parking lot until he felt confident that the failure would not recur. He has not yet notified a dealer or mechanic about the failure. The failure mileage was 57,000 and current mileage is 60,131. Updated 04/29/08.

This is an ongoing problem with the vehicle the throttle sticks in the idle position when the gas pedal is released. It takes a very firm push to release the throttle and when it does release the vehicle lurches forward. Complaints to the dealer result in a recommendation to have the fuel system flushed on an ongoing basis. Some relief is achieved by cleaning the throttle body area around the butterfly plate. This has to be done almost monthly. The dealer also states that he does not know of a factory fixes to this problem.
