CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1998 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, peeling paint, & subframe rust. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Peeling paint has also been a huge issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

The contact owns a 1998 Honda Accord. The contact purchased four Grand Am lxe tires. While driving 60mph, the vehicle began shaking and the tires weren't making proper contact with the road. The two front tires were worn, uneven and the tread began tearing apart. The remaining tread depth is approximately 5/32. The tire mileage at the time the failure occurred was unknown. The tire pressure was not available. The tire size was P205/65R15. The dot number was 08407540. Pictures available. The current and vehicle failure mileage were 157232.

I purchased a full set of futura 775 P205/65R15 tires for 1998 Honda Accord on 05/01/2005 from pep boys store. Within aprox. 6 months, two of the tires developed broken/ separated belts causing severe handling/ drivable problems. The store was reluctant to replace all tires, but replaced the two faulty tires with 2000lte tires. Now a third tire has developed the same issue. I replaced it with a good used tire and have kept the broken one for possible return to store.
