CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.

Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

Driver's seat of my '99 Honda Accord has become loose, rocks and pulls away from steering wheel upon acceleration, causing lack of control since momentum pulls driver away from wheel. When seat is not occupied, this is evident by pushing on headrest, causing seat to 'rock' backwards approx 6". mechanic said that a piece of steel on the bracket under the seat is broken (& seat bracket is the same for all 1998-2002 models). Dealer said this isn't a recall or anything so repairs would be at my expense. Car cannot pass state inspection until this is fixed, so looks like I now have no choice but to try & locate a replacement bracket at a junkyard & pay someone to install, costing me at least $300 (with no guarantee that the replacement bracket will not have the same problem). Big safety issue here with lots of complaints reporting the same problem (per online search)- why has this not been properly addressed?

My power assisted driver's seat bracket that attaches the seat bottom to the seat base has fractured because of the weld condition of bracket. My seat weld at the left front corner of the seat bottom now causes the seat to rock with no stability. The Honda dealership will not honor the PE02072 stating that my VIN no. Is not in the range and that the time period has expired. This is a dangerous weld failure that ODI should hold Honda accountable.

While driving at any speed, the driver's seat moved. The vehicle has been taken to the dealer twice, but the problem continued. A part was added to remedy the problem but did not resolve the problem. The part was added twice and worked neither time. At times when the consumer was coming to a stop, the seat would jerk forward and back.

May 232003

Accord

Seat frame bracket failure on power assisted driver's seat. The left front corner of of the seat bottom bracket failed, and appear to be due to the weld condition of the bracket. Under acceleration the silt tilts backwards. Can't believe the NHTSA just closed an investigation on 3/2003 this issue and decided it did not warrant the use of Agency resources, I weigh 190 pounds, and do not jump into and out of my seat, it is clearly a manufacturing safety defect.

Accord 6-cyl

The left front corner of the seat has about a half-inch of vertical slack in it. (you can move the left-front corner up that much with your hand.) this allows the seat to rock back (in a rocking motion) when pushing against the seat back. This happens when getting in the car, changing positions in the seat, and even under hard acceleration. The dealer replaced the seat track under warranty. That didn't solve it. The service representative at the dealer told me this was not an uncommon problem. It started as soon as we got the car (purchased new) and it's never stopped.

Seat track is broken and seat is flopping around. The metal piece that attached to the seat frame has broken off. When looking at the break, observed metal shavings on floor and a lot of metal shavings at the point of the break. Appears to be a defective part or workmanship. My concern is that if I had had an accident, the seat would not have held and I could have been thrown out the back of the car. I have reported this to Honda customer care department, they did not seem concerned at all. Offered to pay half of the part required to fix this but they said the part was around $700! I have not had it fixed yet because I feel they should be responsible. I see that mine is the 4th complaint reported to you regarding this same issue.
