CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.

Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

Ignition interlock problem. Key can be removed with car parked in neutral. Car will roll if on a hill. Very dangerous. This has been subject of a recall, but Honda won't fix my car because it is not in their VIN range. This should be repaired under the existing recall, but they refuse. See ODI 10054990.

Ignition interlock problem. Key can be removed from ignition when car is in neutral or drive. Recognized recall issue. My car is in affected 1999 model year, but not covered because it is not within VIN range!! this should be covered under the recognized vehicle recall. Honda refuses to honor this recall because not in VIN range but lots of other cars in 99 model year have failed because of this. Because of this car will roll if parked and key removed and car is not in park. Interlock is supposed to prevent this from happening. Dangerous! it has happened twice to me. See ODI 10054995.

I'm having problems with both the ignition and my door locks. I took my vehicle back for the recall, but I am still having problems with stalling, but moreso with the car attempting to turn off. I get flickering of all the indicator lights, and if I do not hit the gas pedal, the car shuts off completely. I also have an ongoing problem with my doors not locking from the driver's side. When I hit the lock button, all doors lock except mine. My alarm system (viper) has an automatic door lock feature but all the doors except the driver's door locks. These problems are ongoing, so it's impossible to give a correct incident date, so I'm giving the date it last happened.

The key of the car can be removed from the ignition switch without first placing the transmission in park. This makes it possible for the driver to leave the car with the key without first locking the transmission. This is not a one-time event but can be done at any time.

Honda currently has a recall scheduled on their website for 1999 Accord involving the ignition switch. This failure causes the car to quit while driving and/or not start properly. These have both happened to me, but Honda will not do anything about it as my VIN is not supposed to have a bad switch. My vehicle is acting exactly as described on the website. It has quit while driving two times and not started once. Both times it quit I was driving in traffic. It started right up again. Can anything be done to get my vehicle fixed under the recall. It is unreliable the way it is.

Vehicle loses power while driving; panel lights blink with the exception of the check engine light. This has occurred on 4 separate occasions. One time, it would not start until the 5th or 6th turn of the key. I could not even change gears. The anti- theft light has blinked on occasion while in motion as well. Also, it does not accelerate properly. It was taken to the dealer in 11/1999 for repair. They kept it for 2 days and could not find anything wrong. A week and a half later, it lost power when trying to move at a green light. The dealer even charged me $15 for a rental car even though the car was leased in August 1999 and is under warranty.
