CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2000 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, & problems with the airbag system (SRS). We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

The SRS warning light likes to come on due to a defective seat belt sensor -- typically the driver's side. This sensor is covered under Honda's lifetime seat belt warranty, but some dealers charge a $100+ "diagnostic fee" or tell customers the entire SRS unit ($800) is bad.

Dash board lights went off without any warning signs. The entire instrument panel was invisible in night. It is a safety issue as I could not read any of the instrument panels. The car was taken to Honda dealership for failure analysis and repairs. They found that the multiplex unit on the driver side of the car had failed and needs replacement. Honda has already issued recall for the same component for the same problem for the same model year (2000) car as mine, but since my VIN# was not part of recall, they refused to honor the recall. At this point I had to pay $428 to get the car fixed. I would like NHTSA to take this up Honda to get this taken care as part of recall as this has been one of the common problem in this model year. The recall campaign number for this problem in NHTSA database is 04V256000 and Honda recall number is P36.

The dimmer control for the instrument panel light failed and can not see the instruments at night. There is already a report for this failure (#04V256000), for my same model year. Honda will not honor recall because my VIN does not apply.

The air bags did not deploy, seat belts were in use and no injuries were sustained. The police were on the scene however no report was filed. The interior lights work intermittently. There are several indicator lights that do not work at all, and the lights that do work dim without warning. There is a NHTSA recall # 02V08000, regarding the fontal air bags and a NHTSA recall # 04V256000, regarding the interior lighting. The VIN was not included in the recall.
