CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2000 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, & problems with the airbag system (SRS). We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

The SRS warning light likes to come on due to a defective seat belt sensor -- typically the driver's side. This sensor is covered under Honda's lifetime seat belt warranty, but some dealers charge a $100+ "diagnostic fee" or tell customers the entire SRS unit ($800) is bad.

I was applying brake pressure at low speed through a parking lot, made a turn to park reverse, foot on brake put car in reverse to back up, put foot lightly on gas pedal and it gain speed and lurched forward instead, over a curb, up an slight incline and hit library wall, and stopped. Air bag did not deploy. I am sore, it was towed and I pay to have it towed to my mechanic to look at next week.

I was approaching a traffic light at a speed of about 35 mph driving my Honda Accord 2000 V6 on July 13, 2013 approximately @ 2.00 pm est. I was in the right lane and all of a sudden my car accelerated on its own increasing the speed to approximately 60 mph. Shocked by the random acceleration, I applied brakes to stop the vehicle. After stomping on the pedal it was apparent that the brakes did not work. Therefore in order to avoid going towards the traffic I decided to drive into the woods on to my right side. The car came to a stop inside a wooded area 45 yards from the edge of the right lane knocking off all the trees on its way. It deployed both airbags in the front. The vehicle is completely damaged ( totaled). There was no injuries to me or any others in this crash. I firmly believe & suspect there was some malfunction in the vehicle's speed control system that resulted in this mishap. It would be a great help if you could assist in contacting Honda motor company.

I was driving my Honda Accord on a residential street, when the transmission started to shift erratically. The D4 light started to flash and the 'check engine' light came on. The Honda dealership that serviced the vehicle told me that the transmission had failed. This from a car that I had purchased six weeks earlier. Luckily the incident happened on a vacant road and not a highway on-ramp where smooth shifting is a life or death scenario.

I was pulling into the parking space after driving the vehicle for 45 mins (approx. 20 miles). When I was ready park the car and switch off the ignition, the car suddenly accelerated way too fast and hit the building in front. I was driving into the parking space at less than around 10 mph as I had to make 3 turns within 100 feet before coming into vacant parking space. My leg was also in the break pedal as I made those turns after getting into the private property from il rte 83. I can definitely confirm that my leg was not in gas pedal as my right leg was on the break pedal to make those turns and stop the car in the parking space. It all happened in the matter of few seconds and there was no time to react. The car came to halt only after hitting the building. Both air bags deployed as soon as the car hit the building and there was heave smoke inside the car. It was really scary because by looking at the damage the speed at the time of accident looks to be around 50 mph. It was a relatively higher curb in front and the building was just 6 - 8 feet away from the curb, I was also driving into the parking space at less than 10 mph. I am really shocked to see this kind of unintended/sudden acceleration happen with Honda Accord cars which could prove to be fatal for the driver, passenger and pedestrian alike.

Transmission in 2000 Honda Accord was diagnosed by two mechanics (independent and Honda dealer) as requiring replacement quoted at over $3800. Symptoms included: Gear shift slippage, D4 indicator light flashing, delayed gear engagement, erratic and harsh shifting resulting in the car lurching forward while in drive, atf leak, erratic acceleration, and the left differential diagnosed with excessive play. Car had been well maintained, keeping all fluid levels monitored and in check with routine maintenance. After calling Honda America, I was told that "due to age" the "company's position" was that they were unable to provide assistance of any kind despite previous reports of the transmission in 2000 Accord as being a known manufacturer's error/faulty production. Honda admitted error on the issue but remained firm that they would not support resolution. Am left with vehicle in undrivable condition that is unsafe on the road due to erratic transmission behavior. At one point, the vehicle lurched forward uncontrollably, nearly hitting a pedestrian. Request NHTSA follow-up and investigation of ongoing transmission issues with these vehicles, encouraging consumer resolution options for Honda owners. Resolution should not be limited to age of vehicle when safety of consumers and other drivers are at hand. These vehicles should not be allowed on the road with faulty transmissions. Had I been aware of the safety issue, I would not have purchased my Honda. Thank you!

This is a report of an incident of unintended acceleration of a motor vehicle which is related to an accident which occurred on March 9, 2011. The vehicle involved is a 2000 Honda Accord SE. The driver was reversing out of a parking space when the engine revved up and the car started to move backward very fast. The driver stepped on the brake and tried to put the vehicle in neutral but the vehicle went into drive and lurched forward at a very high rate of speed uncontrollably across the sidewalk, three(3) lanes of traffic, through a lawn where it first struck a brick building, removed a 30-inch landscape boulder, and then struck a second building which stopped it, traveling over 200 feet before coming to a halt in a public alley. All of this happened in only a few seconds and the driver could not stop the vehicle because the brakes did not help. It was a miracle that the driver was not hit or killed going across the highway. It is very important that this incident be investigated

I was traveling in reverse for approximately 50 yards at a speed of under 5 mph when the vehicle suddenly accelerated. My passenger was able to shift the car into neutral as I stepped on the brake. The car idled at a high RPM for 2-3 seconds after it stopped. I have experienced this situation on 4 or 5 prior occasions over the past several years but this was the first time it happened while backing. The last time I experienced a sudden acceleration was in Sept. 2006; a dealer mechanical inspection at that time checked the tcm/PCM for dtc and found no stored codes.

1. the events leading up to the failure: 133K miles on 2000 Honda Accord, 4 door, LX 4cyl, 5 spd manual trans. I'm the original owner, purchased in Nov of 1999. Car has been driven daily 15-30 miles with no problems. Regular maintenance has been performed. The car is in excellent condition. 2. the failure, how often it occurs, it's consequences: On 8/3/10, started to drive to work. After 2 miles, I came to a stop light. When the light turned green, I accelerated. When I went to shift from 1st to 2nd gear, the engine over-revved - up to the rev limiter, even though I had taken my foot off the accelerator in order to shift. I coasted with the clutch depressed while the engine "bounced" off the rev limiter for a second. Then I shut the engine off. I could not "un-stick" the throttle -which was stuck in wot (wide open throttle) position. 3. what was done to correct the failure; I.e, parts repaired or replaced (and if old part is available)? I tried to lift the throttle off the floor, it was stuck. I removed the floor mat, which made no difference. I then opened the hood. I could see the throttle cables were slack and that the throttle body was stuck. The part of the throttle body which holds the cruise control accelerator cable had broken. When I stepped on the accelerator, the cable (no longer held in place) flopped forward and jammed the throttle open. Untangling the jammed throttle body, and securing the cruise control throttle cable to a location where it could not come loose, allowed the throttle body to work again. Used throttle bodies are available - $135 +/-. new throttle bodies are available $400 approx. Labor is 1-2 hours to replace. Very dangerous condition. Easy for me to repeat this. I have not repaired this yet. I called the dealership - they wanted to see it. I took it to my mechanic, he verified that the throttle body broke (failed) in a troubling way.

At 3 pm I drove down to pick up mail (from car window) at the end of pipestem. Backed up turning right to make U turn for return. Straightened wheels and started forward to begin left turn on narrow road, a maneuver I have performed dozens of times. Car accelerated despite immediate braking and ran off embankment into woods. Unable to stop I deliberately hit a tree to avoid driving into pond. Triple a pulled the car out of the woods and craftsman auto body of chantilly (va) did the repairs. I assumed it had been a glitch in the accelerator but could not prove it. I now practice throwing the car into neutral from time to time in case it happens again. Recent newspaper reports of similar cases induced me to make this report.

The contact owns a 2000 Honda Accord. While driving approximately 65 mph, the speed control was engaged. The driver attempted to disengage it by depressing the brake pedal and there was a sudden forceful acceleration. The vehicle became uncontrollable. The contact depressed the brake pedal and the vehicle slowed down. He pulled over and turned off and restarted the engine. The vehicle resumed normal operation. In addition, the vehicle failed to operate in reverse. The vehicle has not been repaired. The VIN was unable to be entered into the system. The failure and current mileages were 125,000.

I have a 2000 Honda Accord with around 117,000 miles and have had issues of the accelerator sticking for at least a year but never thought too much off it until yesterday when pulling into a parking spot in a parking garage. As I was pulling in my gas pedal stuck and jerked my car forward into a cement wall. I was applying the brakes but the car would not stop. The force of the impact threw my car into neutral from drive, my stereo is now sunken into my dashboard, I hit my head on the roof of my car and my knee went into the dashboard. (the airbag did not deploy which is also a little concerning with how much damage there is to my car) my front bumper is scratched and cracked and it has separated from the front passenger side panel. When I called Honda to have them look at it they quoted me at least $200 diagnoses the problem.

On April 9, 2004, I was backing my 2000 Honda Accord, 4 door to a pump at a gas station. The car suddenly accelerated at such a velocity while backing that I ran into two other cars and stopped only when I ran into the service station building's wall. Even though I applied the brake the car continued to careen out of control despite my efforts to stop it. It is most fortunate no one was maimed or killed.
