2000 Accord - progressive slipping (D1 to D2) requires repair or work around.
Will try starting in D2 to avoid D1 completely. Then shifting to D3 or D4 when underway and at reasonable shift point. Then reversing on the way down. Need repair. Don't need to spend on ineffective solutions which looks to be the case as rebuilds fail reliably.
Irony abound as I was looking to pick up a Honda CRV. But a company that fools me once is shameful. It would be a mistake purchase from a company that treats a customer that way.

I have this Honda Accord where the transmission is sticking from 1st to 2nd gear... of COURSE the EXTENDED WARRANTY has run out! I am really wanting to know if there are others who have this issue with the transmission and AFTER the extended warranty has run out??? I think Honda should help with the cost since it IS a very common problem with cars in this year!!! Please email me at suziq842@yahoo.com if you have the same issue. Maybe we can combine efforts and get them to do something OR maybe REIMBURSE you if you have already made the repair :)
Thanks & good luck!

I have noticed that there are some issues with this particular year of Accords- V6... I already did more work on this car then I ever did on the 93 Honda Accord that was at 218,000 miles. At around 140,000 miles I started noticing that the transmission was having a rough time shifting from 1st into 2nd. But it got progressively worse to the point where now it WON'T shift out of first. I can feel the rpms climb and then slams down and the D4 on the dash starts blinking. I then have to shut the car off to reset the mechanicals, and do it over and over until it finally shifts into 2nd. After the initial problem of starting up for the day, it works just fine. Still revs a little high before shifting in the lower gears, but a dream compared to when it sits. I'm not exactly sure what to do about this, I don't have a job right now and am afraid to hear the cost of a fix!

I had the same problem as everyone else: slipping between 1st and 2nd gear, and sometimes 2nd and 3rd at low speeds and especially when cruising (as in turning a corner), then engaging the transmission and getting a slip when trying to accelerate again.
Diagnosis from the transmission shop: burned up converter, needs a rebuilt transmission: $2400. I called the Honda "goodwill repair" office, and they told me there was no chance of getting and help on the transmission repair, since they had already settled a class action suit that extended the warranty, and mine was 6,000 miles outside of the class action boundary. Sounds like this is a common problem with the 2000 Accords, Honda knows about it, and decided only to help with cars the law suit forced them to. I was hoping "goodwill" would be just that, but no luck.
Don't buy one of these Accords! I used to be a loyal Honda customer (this was my 3rd), but this changed my mind. This is the first Honda I've owned with over 100k miles. I bought it because I thought a Honda would last well past 100k, with maybe to 200k without this kind of repair. Ha! I'll look for a Toyota or Nissan next time. Better yet, I'll buy American.

OK, this is for all you Honda die-hards...believe me I WAS one.
I have owned:
1.) 83' Honda CRX (5-speed) Si (sold with 230,000)
2.) 86' Honda Accord (5-speed) (sold with 320,000)
3.) 89' Honda Prelude Si (5-speed) (sold with 150,000)
4.) 00'Accord EX V6 coupe (automatic..bought by wife) (Should have sold at 45,000)
So it's only a list of 4 but then again look at the mileage...for god sakes I am only 30. Seriously I just don't want you all to think I am a Honda hating asshole. While loving the first three Honda's, I absolutely HATE the 2000 Accord. Absolute piece of junk. We have taken it in to the dealer for service since we bought it, except for easy stuff like oil changes and brakes. We owned it since 36k and at 45k the transmission started shifting tough and over the last 3 years we took it in about 5 times to different dealers to complain, and all said nothing could be done until the D-4 light flashed. On the 4th inspection at 74k, they recommended new wheel bearings, ball joints, tie rods, sway bars and a lot more. Really that much stuff being replaced at that low mileage was scary. After the 4th trip, we swore we would not waste anymore money taking it in until the D-4 light started flashing at 105K. We called the dealer and took it in. They informed us that the extended warranty granted after the class-action lawsuit was up, and at 100k we had to call Honda and file a complaint.
Well after three weeks of fighting and waiting, we were informed that because the warranty period was up that we would have to pay 70% of $3,600. This means they would only cover 30%...that is crap! I can do it myself for $500. Not to mention that we had it in with complaints and showed them all the receipts. I have read several posts that said that even the rebuilt transmissions are junk. I am switching it to a 5-Speed. If anyone wants info I will post pictures of the steps needed. I am never buying another Honda but would like to help any of you who don't have time or money to put 2 or 3 transmissions in these things.

If I wanted to replace a tranny at 114k miles, I woulda bought a Chevy! As of this writing, I do not know the outcome with Honda. Dealer recommends a rebuilt tranny for $3500.
This makes me furious! It happened too late to be included in the lawsuit settlement.

I bought a used 2000 Honda accord 180,000 km for my daughter for 4,800 I was told the transmission was replaced under warranty and that it had four new brake lines replaced. everything seemed fine but is she going to have trans. problems down the road? maybe I should have did more research on this year of accord. And I find that the car can take off on you I find myself braking needlessly when the car should be down gearing as I let off the gas. I drive an acura el with computer controlled 4 speed automatic,When I let off the gas ,the car responds and the brakes dont have to be applied as hard.My daughter has a heavy foot so I hope the car lives up to it name rick

I hate Honda's I will never buy a Honda again. In my opinion they are the worst, they know about our car's problems, but are still manufacturing the transmissions that the problems happen in. If they made a mistake they should learn what it is and replace it with the updated version. My Transmission died in Sep 07 and only cost 250.00 because of the extended warranty, which is fine. But know I am having the same problem only 4000 miles and 7 months later, come on Honda. I am surprised a class action lawsuit hasn't been filed because this problem has almost caused an accident for me by jolting forward when I came to a slow stop behind someone or approaching an intersection. If Honda made a mistake they should pay for it, NOT THE CONSUMER!

6 months after i bought my accord the transmission started slipping, drove it like that for about a year and half till it got really bad, i just replaced it. did it on my own so i only bought the transmission but after 2 days it went back to the same problem. someone once told me Honda had a problem with the clutch relay and there was an actual recall for that problem. when i contacted the dealer because my car was over 100k miles they wouldn't fix it. now that i want to get the part info to buy it, i cant find it. Honda has disappointed me a lot. Maybe it should be call early Hyundai.

I will never buy a Honda again. Both my wifes 2000 Odyssey and now my 2000 Accord have had transmission problems. My wifes was fixed free at 90,000 miles (after several years of telling the dealer that the transmission should not clunk while you are going in reverse- but they said they could not feel it). Mine slips severely between 1st and 2nd gear- which again for the last six months I have complained about but they denied there was a problem. Finally with my car at 120,000 miles they say my transmission is shot and could fail at any time. Of course it is not covered by any warranty- the guy at the Honda repair shop even denied that he ever heard of there being problems with the Accord transmission. I had two Mazda's before this- one with 145,000 miles one with 165,000 miles and neither had any transmission problems (or any other problems for that matter). I thought I was going to get an even better car with Honda. Boy was I wrong.

Well let me start off by saying that first of all this is and probably will only be my first Honda ever. I got the car with 45k on it. Drove about 25k and now I am getting a problem. I drive normal reaching about 40 miles an hour, then when I hit the brakes it just jerks really hard and slips from 1st to 2nd. So I come to a complete stop now my D (drive) light is blinking, so when I start to slowly accelerate it starts from 2nd gear not first. I have to turn off the engine and turn it back on for it to be normal for maybe a mile or so. Then do the same thing all over again. I F*!@*n HATE MY CAR.

I bought my accord certified then came to know about the warranty extension. It takes longer to shift in between 1-2 and 2-3 not only in the morning but also whenever I start driving after about 2-3 hrs of parking. Problem is more obvious when the outside is hot. It gets alright gradually as I drive and after 15-20 minutes shifts really smooth. I bought it on 2005 Feb with 28K miles on it. Drove 45K miles since then in two years, never failed. Had two minor problems (not the tranny) but got it cleaned/fixed by the dealership under warranty. Never disappointed me. I love it's performance and features except I am always scared about the tranny.
Dont have a clue why it happens only in the morning and early phase of driving. Showed my Honda dealer, but it was shifting smoother when I took it to them. Got more smooth when they were test driving so they could not "duplicate". They said that early in the morning the engine runs with higher rpm to heat up the engine and thus shifts harder. Also because it is a V6 thus the shifting is different!! God knows!!
But hey guys.. Honda has settled down a case against them and has extended the warranty upto 109K miles or 7yrs9months whichever comes first... and thus I will be relieved until the Feb 2008.
I just talked to Honda over the phone and got the service bulletin no. 02-062. Tell it to your Honda dealer they will be able to pull out the info. Best wishes for your cars.

Transmission won't shift from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd. It takes longer to do that by a few seconds, causing jerky shifting. But it only happens the first few minutes in the morning!! The rest of the day it's fine!
Why in the world would that only happen in the morning ... I don't go to Honda dealers all these years to save money, so they may refuse to replace the transmission anyway. the shop i go to had replaced the transmission fluid, it looked clean to begin with but still the problem is there. also added transmission fluid additive but didn't help.

I had my transmission fixed and the cost was 2500.00. Thinking everything was great, we took the car on our holiday to California. We drove about 5 hours and the engine light went on. We had to drive backwards 1.5 hours to the transmission place and had to leave the car for 5 days. We picked it up on the way home and had to put it in the shop for another week. After 6 months and driving over the 12,000 miles warranty, it started slipping again. My check engine light has been on again and will not go off. I hate to have to pay again to get this fixed.

My 2000 accord has been running without any problems for the past six years. for the past 3 weeks there seems to be a transmission problem. the check engine light is on permanently on. It does not shift from 1-2 gear smoothly. It goes into high rpm (5000) and then jumps to second. the car obviously jerks badly when this happens.
called the Honda dealership and they have to hook it up to diagnose the problem.. according to them it "could be any type of problem" however since my car has 94000 miles, they said it would be covered under the warranty .. taking the car on nov 9 '06

The transmission started slipping between 1st and 2nd gear and all the lights on the dashboard would come on. I took it to a shop and they reset the computer. Then I took it to a transmission shop and they said that there was a definite slip between 1st and 2nd gear and that eventually and probably soon, the transmission would need to be replaced. I took it to jiffy lube in November of 2004 and they serviced the transmission and it ran much better for 2 months and now it is worse than before. I have called Honda and they deny having a problem, but will check it out for a fee. It slips and jerks severely. If Honda's are such great cars, why is this happening? and why do I have to pay to fix a car that will "run for 200,000 miles"? I think that after this Honda (my 3rd), I will never buy another. Each one has had its own problems, but "never Honda's problem".
We have partnered with JustAnswer to offer online auto repair help and advice from expert professional automotive technicians. You describe your transmission problem or ask your question and they try to help you figure it out. The fee is typically $9 to $15, but you can offer to pay more for really tough questions. You will usually receive an answer in 10 minutes or less, and you do not have to pay anything unless you accept the answer.

I just came back from the dealer and they indicated that I need a new transmission. I realize that the car is 9 years old but at less than 35,000 miles I really don't think the transmission should need to be replaced. I see that this has been an issue that I didn't know existed with this car. I see in one complaint that there was a class action law suit and I will try to locate that on the internet to bring up to my dealership. Just wanted to vent on the issue.
