Honda needs to step up to the plate and address the problem, with the transmission on the 2002 accords. I was going to hand this car down to my oldest son but I guess, we'll both be driving a toyota soon.

No complaint. With less than 90,000 miles and me having bought a Certified used Honda less than 3 1/2 years ago, I asked Honda for help. Without a warranty, Honda put in a re manufactured transmission and allowed me 50% goodwill. How great it feels to not drive the most expensive car I ever owned jerking, slipping and hesitating. I love Honda. I don't know any other car manufacturer that would have stepped up to the plate and helped someone out for the asking.

I just bought the car off a person that took great care of it with all the scheduled maintenance. The other day as I was driving away from my house the transmission would hesitate to shift gears and would jerk pretty hard once it would get to second gear. I took it to my mechanic and he told me that the transmission had to be replaced. My car now has 120,000 miles and I thought that this was the reason for the malfunction of my transmission, but after looking at this blog I realize that the mileage has little to do with it. It is just a faulty transmission from the get go. I am very disappointed in Honda because their vehicles have had a good reputation and after having this problem I doubt such a reputation. I wish Honda would take responsibility for using such faulty transmissions and at least pay for part of the cost to repair. If anyone needs any support to get a law suit or try to get honda to do something I am all for it... jolujaper@yahoo.com.

The car was purchased as a new car in 2002 right off the show room floor. I never drive any where of any distance accept work and back home. 7 years later with just under 70,000 miles the transmission starts to fail. The Honda dealer in my town gives me a quote of $3299.00 to purchase a new transmission, or I should consider purchasing a new car. They said they could not tell me if the transmission would fail in two days, two weeks or over a year. They said, most people just purchase new vehicles. I took the car to Alexandria, VA today for another opinion and was told the transmission was going into failure, but the problem was the transmission fuel was never changed during maintenance and that even if I paid Honda $3299 for a new transmission that it would not be new, but refurbished. How was I to know the transmission fuel was not being changed and how can I get Honda to replace it for free. Who has the answer?

Same as all other posters. The transmission has been slipping for months now. I just thought it was a simple timing belt problem or similar. It just got really scary today on the freeway with my 5 years old. I am glad I found this site. I will be placing a call to Honda to make them aware that we are aware of this transmission problems with Accords. Let's see if they do the right thing and pay for part of the repair. If not, I will be making the call to the previously mentioned law office.

When attempting to accelerate moderately from any speed, the Accord would feel like it was stalling, then suddenly and roughly downshift and surge forward. The delay could have been disastrous when pulling into traffic if not accounted for. I wrote up the problem a few times after it became very prominent around 45,000 miles, but the dealer said they could never duplicate the problem. It happened to me almost every time I drove the car. This went on for almost three years. Of course, the warranty had long expired. I also have a virtually identical 2000 Accord LX whose shifts were/are always smooth and without hesitation. I always liked its transmission better than the 2002's. The 2002 Accord's transmission grew worse with time and miles.

Have been having trouble with this car for the last 10 months. First it's the O2 sensor, or so they said. Car has been having trouble shifting into gear since before the O2 sensor came on. Just took it to the dealership where I bought it & was told that the transmission needs to be replaced. I don't understand how this car's tranny can go, with only 53,000 miles. I have had this car in for regular maintenance service & oil changes regularly. Any advice on how to pursue a "good will repair?"

Hopefully if EVERYONE of us does this we will get a recall. I was told by the law office to deal with Honda ONLY, because if the lawsuit goes through like it did on the 2001's, the stipulation in the settlement said they would only repair or repay transmissions that were replaced by Honda. I bought a 2002 Accord SE, automatic transmission, that was a lease car initially. I purchased this used in 2005 with appx. 36,000 miles on it. Currently it has about 67,000 miles on it. I was told last year (2008) in August that my transmission was failing. I talked with a reputable repair shop in my area and he confirmed it and told me it would cost the same if I had it rebuilt then or waited for it to drop dead. I have milked it for a year so far. I don't have $2000+ handy. It seems to me that a car with that lower mileage should not have the transmission fail. I bought the Honda because of it's reliability and my previous experience with a Honda Civic.

My 2002 Accord has had the same issues as many respondents. When placed into drive the hesitates and then jerks forward spinning the front tires if you are unaware what is happening. When I shift it into drive now I wait till I feel the jerk then give it gas as it takes off better. My mechanic defiantly says the transmission is going out. When I contacted Honda I asked how is it they have a recall for 2001, 2003 and 2004, but not 2002!!

I too have taken very good care of my Honda since I bought it new in 2002. Keeping up with the service and taking care of things as necessary. I was a HUGE fan of Honda, loving my car. I have been one of Honda's biggest cheerleaders. I replaced the timing belt at 100,000, and then a couple weeks ago had to replace the catalatic converter at $1300. Now today as I was making a turn in the middle of the street my car hesitated and wouldn't move upon acceleration, it finally started to crawl. Luckily I was close to home, as I tried to put into reverse and drive it clunked into it very hard. It's obvious the transmission is going or gone. What is sad is this car was just recently paid off, and we were going to give it to our daughter next year for graduation and buy a new Honda for me. NOT NOW ! ! ! ! ! In some ways I am sad to have found this site and this news, I couldn't believe that I just happened to buy a car that would be the one that would have this terminal problem. There is no extended future for this car. I am also glad that I ran into this site as I will be informed prior to my visit to Honda Service department tomorrow morning. This has been a very big dissapointment to me, I hope that Honda will be supportive to me tomorrow when I ask them to cover the entire cost of the replacement. My father purchased the car for me in 2006 for my 16th birthday. I was so excited! My uncle drives a honda prelude and he was telling me how awesome that it was that I was "rollin" a honda like him. About a month or so ago I noticed that it was not shifting as well as it should from first to second. then about a week ago it got really bad. On my way to work this past Tuesday, March 24th, 2009 it would not shift at all!! my D4 light was blinking, my maintenance light came on, and the check engine light came on. I had my buddy that went to school do a test and they found that there were two cracks in the seals of the transmission fluid cable. the output shaft seal and the axle seal. I took it to BP to get it fixed and that cost $360. They told me it was in perfect condition! I got in my car this morning happy as hell because I thought this was behind me, nope ... still jerking like crazy trying to shift from 1st to 2nd. after I'm in 3rd n' 4th the car is fine. Even when I'm at a stoplight sometimes the car just JUMPS forward! literally just jolts forward!!!! I am 18 years old and I can not afford to pay for a new transmission!!!! nor can my father, he's broker than I am!!! I think I'm just going to say F you HONDA n' go buy an Altima like I have been thinking about unless I can get Honda to fix the transmission or I'm done. that's all I have to say. oh yeah, and F U HONDA!!!!

Bought a brand new 2002 Honda Accord EX Coupe V6 @ the end of 2002. At 16,000 miles the transmission completely went out. Honda replaced the transmission with a re-built at the time. This was covered under my warranty, but a big pain in the ass for a new car. Now with 123,000 the transmission is starting to hesitate and shift hard into 1 and 2. Not completely sure what to do about it, but it was admitted to me by Honda at the time that the 2002 Accords had severe transmission issues. No extended warranty was available.

OK, so this is definitely ridiculous, so there is about 194 people so far on this website complaining about this specific make and mode and year and HONDA won't do anything to fix it??? Kind of sad with the reputation they have, they have made me a true none believer of them. I bought my car less then a year ago, always had wanted a Honda since I have had very bad luck with cars and Hondas are supposed to be very reliable cars. Well anyway yesterday my husband calls me at work and tells me that the engine light is on and the TCS light is on. He said he backed up and when he went to switch to D4 the car wouldn't go. Transmission problems????? Are you kidding me????? I bought a freaking Honda because they run to 300K with no problems and the one I buy is Crap. I am so absolutely outraged at this.

I purchased my car in Feb 2007. I ran a Carfax and found that the car had only had one owner. I did not purchase an extended warranty because I figured "hey! it's a Honda". The car had 54K miles on it. I have always noticed the the car shifted a little bit heavier than my cars in the past, but I never thought much of it. All of sudden my check engine and TCS lights came on, and my D4 light was flashing. I took it to the dealership, and of course they told me "you need a new transmission and the price is $3400". I told them no way and I was coming to get the car. Upon hearing this news, I was extremely shocked thinking there was no way a HONDA had transmission problems at 69K miles. That is when I started searching the web and found this website. I am curious as to whether or not any lawsuit or action was ever started to force Honda into recalling these cars. I have not decided what I am going to do yet, but if anyone has had success getting Honda to fix the car, I would love to hear how.

I own the 2002 Honda accord and have had problems with the transmission for the last year. It first started with a blinking D4 light and the car would not shift into overdrive. The next problem came when the engine started revving up as I was siting at a light. The transmission is also starting to slip and when the weather is cold it gets even worse. The odd thing is that if I stop and turn the car off and back on it seems to correct the problem for a few days. I've noticed that a number of people have had almost the same serious of problems occur. I was told by Honda that I needed to replace the transmission at a cost somewhere between $3,000 and $4,000. Lets not mention the number of brakes this car has required in 5 years ( five and three sets of rotors). What a joke. I said I would never buy a ford after all the problems I had with a 1998 temo gls. Well I guess I can add Honda to my list.

My 2002 Honda Accord was purchased brand new with 50 miles on it in
November 2001. I am currently at 150,000 miles. Scheduled routine
maintenance have always been completed, and I have had no problems with
the car until recently. I started noticing a slight hesitation upon starting off
several months ago. The check engine light came on. I thought I might have
gotten bad gas and put in gas treatments for several trips. The check engine
light would not turn off and the hesitation continued. I had a diagnostic done
and it reported that the EGR valve needed to be checked or replaced. I had
the valve replaced. The car appeared to work fine for the next several
months. Earlier last week as I started off to work, the car would not shift into
the next gear. The check engine light came on and the drive gear on the
dashboard started blinking. I immediately stopped, put the car in gear and
shut the engine off. I turned it back on and the car hesitated for a few
seconds before going into the correct gears. The check engine light remained
on. I went to have a diagnostic done and 2 reports ran -- one for an EGR
valve and one about possible transmission failure. The EGR valve had
already been replaced so I took it back to see what the problem was this past
Saturday. The valve was flushed/cleaned and the light went off. I also had my
battery replaced. There was no leak in my transmission and the fluid
level/color was ok. Everything went fine. This morning, the car hesitated
again and would not shift into the next gear. The check engine light came on and the drive gear on the dashboard was blinking. Several cars were behind
me. I tried to accelerate to keep from getting hit, but the car went slower and
slower. I had another diagnostic run this morning -- possible transmission
failure or low transmission fluid. The attendant checked my levels. Everything
was OK. It's the transmission. A recall needs to be done.

Ok, for starters, I have to agree with most on this site that Honda Customer Service toll free line isn't really customer service at all. The Honda dealerships already know the issue by describing the problems over the phone, but balls haven't dropped yet to give you the basics and choose to charge you a Bill just to tell you the obvious... At my job when a customer has an issue, we may find it small or large by scale, but we ALWAYS TAKE CARE OF THE ISSUE. My gripe is that I purchased this 2002 Honda Accord SE, already had shifting issues from the get, they always shot me down saying it just needed an oil change, the indicated maintenance referred by parts manual, or implying that I'm lead footing it. I'll leave it at this. My 1994 Olds Cutlass is still running strong, nearing the 300,000 mi. mark with standard battery replacement and plugs repair, NO TRANNY ISSUES. My 1989 FORD BRONCO, *yes, I own a FORD, one of the most NOTORIOUSLY Tran. Fail machines on the road today*, is still Worry Free at @ 200,000 miles!!! Basically, I now need a NEW Transmission in the first car I've financed in years, and will definitely be my last Honda (goes for the Honda powered lawn mowers as well folks!) . I'm going to fork out the 4,000.00 to have it taken care of and am letting every living creature I come across know about it. Thanks Honda, Oh, btw- I talked 3 co-workers out of purchasing one of your crappy cars this year alone/they all bought Nissan's, and definitely not stopping there. Class action lawsuit would be nice but reality check, you need 2 down payments handy when purchasing a Honda, one to drive the auto off of the lot, and the other for your immediate repairs. Ciao~

I suspected that the transmission was failing while under warranty. So I attempted to have the problem rectified, but the transmission auto specialists said there was nothing wrong with the transmission. They replaced the EGR valve and it passed the car emission's test. Here I am a year later with the same crappy problem. No warranty, check engine light will not go off, car has failed the emission's test 2. I tried to trade the car in, but of course I am severely upside down. I am a single parent mother and I do not have the money for the repairs. My tags are expired and I can't get any more temporary tags. I guess I am SOL!

I started having transmission problems in August 08, my 2002 Honda Accord that I bought brand new and have serviced regularly was having transmission problems. The car would jump when changing gear and slow down at times almost to a stall. I took it in for routine maintenance in October and mentioned the problem. I was told that I need a new transmission and I am out of warranty so it would cost me over $2000 to repair, possibly close to $3000. Thankfully a customer told me to inquire about Honda helping to pay for it since I was complaining the car is only 6 years old and I have been taking care of it. The dealer's manager said they would not assist. I then got the phone number for American Honda, 800-999-1009 and called to file a complaint. I got a call a week later from the same dealership saying they will pay half, so now I only have to pay $1200 to replace the transmission.

My problem started 2 months ago. The very 1st thing in the morning, I'd back out of my driveway shift from R to D and I almost got whiplash! Then as I started in my daily routine of taking my daughter to school and myself to work, the RPM's would race up to 4000-5000 for split seconds and then jerk forward. When I would come to a stop sign as I had my foot on the brake, the engine would rev and as soon as I took my foot off of the brake, I would peel out from the corner. Every single morning! All this occurred only at low rates of speed, under 30 mph. After the 1st 5 minutes of driving the car, this would all stop and I would not have anymore problems. Well, for 30 days it did this, like clockwork. Even my 7 yr old daughter said "mommy, somethings wrong with your car!" after on of the jerks caused her to spill milk all over herself. Well, I took it to my Honda dealership and they said they could not make the car do what I had explained and when they hooked it up to the computer, it didn't give them any error codes. They even went as far as to explain to me when the air cond. kicks in, it might "surge" a little. Idiots! I have had 2 cars with their trannies go out in the past and I told them this is what I thought is was-they dismissed me because they couldn't get it to do what I said. Soooo I took it to another repair place, left it there overnight for 2 nights and 3 days, and THEY couldn't get it to do it either. Plus, their computer didn't bring up any error codes either! But the mechanic had a great observation also, he assured me that he checked to make sure that the mat wasn't stuck underneath the accelerator pedal!!!! Idiots! Now every morning before I took it to both of them and every morning after I took it to them it did the same thing-go figure. Soo this am as I pulled out of my driveway and proceeded 15 mph down the block, it raced to 3000 rpm's didn't come back down, CLUNK! and the check engine light came on and the D4 started blinking. Golly gee whilickers! the transmission gave out! I barely made it around the block to get home, so my husband could deliver us to our destinations. I had it towed to the Honda dealer, told them "I told you so, I'm not an idiot" and luckily it's covered under the powertrain warranty up until 100,000 miles. What ever happened to car 101, screw those computers and their codes, open up the hood, take something apart and check it out. After seeing all of the problems on this website, I think this issue should be on the "fleecing of America" with John Stossal!

This car has been in our family since it was brand new. It has had excellent care and maintenance. I am VERY disappointed that with less than 90,000 miles, it has severe transmission issues and will cost thousands of dollars to repair. From this site, I learned that this is a common problem with these Hondas. Honda corporation will not stand by their product. This should have been a recall or extended warranty issue. I feel the only way to get Honda to listen is to file a class action suit. I've owned Honda's in the past and currently own two Hondas, and this will be my last one unless Honda takes the initiative to correct this problem. If anyone wants to file a class action suit or knows how to proceed with a class action suit, please contact me. mdhmidmi@hotmail.com

Wish I'd known about this site BEFORE I bought this car in 2003...transmission slips when you first start to drive it, checked fluid level (yes, I did this while it was running like my daddy taught me), level OK. Today it would not get out of 1st gear; drove GDD to sitters, then straight to the mechanic @ 7:30AM. Said it would cost $80 to run the diagnostic, I said OK, then walked 2 miles home (DD on way to work, no one but the manager at the shop until 8:30 - lazy bums - so had no ride unless I waited). Me and my blistered feet waited with some trepidation for call about the issue hoping it was something simple (life sucks without a car, even for brief periods of time). Call came in around 11AM - baaad news. Was told the diagnostic (love the computer age) said the transmission needed to be overhauled (seeing $$$ signs spinning around my head). Manager Dan said I had 2 options: 1) something called JASPER (or similar sounding name) which basically is putting in a rebuilt transmission - Cost: $4100; 2) shop could replace the parts which would mean my car would have to be "shopitalized" for up to 3 days (likely more since July 4th is 3 days away) - Cost: $3300. By this time my stomach's in knots, and the $$$ have begun to multiply and spin faster. I sighed heavily and told Manager Dan I'd call him back. Phoned DD, LVM. Decision time...spend $3300 for a car that's probably only worth $7K (or less) w/o the tranny in ICU. Meanwhile, DD returns my call (will be borrowing her car for a few days); I gave her the bad news, vented a little. Did some research on Hybrid's; did some research on used vehicles; crunched some numbers; decided to use the repair $$$ as a down payment on a new vehicle. '02's prognosis: bleak -- unless someone wants to have mercy and buy a fixer-upper. Still like Honda's, but Honda should have issued a recall on the transmissions for the '02's.

My transmission went out at 72k miles and with EVERY regularly scheduled maintenance, oil change, etc. After hearing the $2,700 tab, I researched online and found hundreds of people with the same problem in the same year Accord. So I called my local Honda dealership and then Honda customer service. They said I have to pay the hundreds of dollars of extra cost to have my car towed to the dealership and have them diagnose it and only then will Honda consider a "goodwill repair." Well, I already spent $600 at local mechanic to disassemble transmission. Bottom line Honda refused to pay for diagnosis (or extra cost to get over to local dealer) or for repair so I paid out of pocket. More research shows that there is a recall of almost the exact same transmission for the 2003 Accord. As an attorney, I know recalls only come after class action law suits make it too expensive for Honda to ignore. So I am going to document everything and bring a class action law suit for a defective transmission and see if I can get Honda's attention (and reimbursement) for my expense. I must add that this website really helped me with my research.

I've had my car for just a couple years. It is only 6 years old with 80000 miles on it. My family and i went on vacation on July 18, 2008. When we left I noticed the transmission was shifting hard. When i would take off, it would shift hard for the first three gears. When I would slow down to stop, it would down shift very hard. It would also hesitate to shift. I took it to the Honda dealership on July 31, 2008. They called me that afternoon and told me I needed to replace the transmission. They had to order it. It cost me $3500. From the transmission jerking, 2 motor mounts were broken. I also replaced those.

After reading this forum I decided to call Honda of America on July 8. I spoke with Bertha and she said I would have to take the car to a dealer for a diagnosis. I made a appointment with Mistlin Honda, Modesto Ca. to bring the car in July 11. Mistlin service advisor Bob Wynashe had a technician diagnose the problem with the transmission. He concluded the transmission should be replaced. Bob said he would speak with the Honda rep and get back to me. Bob call approx. two hours later and said Honda would replace the transmission and converter if I would pay approx. $800.00 labor. I agreed and took the car in yesterday. I picked the car up today and the bill was $640.00 or $160.00 less than the estimate. I am totally satisfied with the dealer and a little disappointed with Honda. They know the transmission is a piece of junk and should recall all the 2002 Accords and Civics. However, $640.00 sure beats $3500.00.
If anyone would like to use this information when dealing Honda the dealers' work
order number is: 187866 (Mistlin Honda, Modesto Ca.)

Accord LX 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 100,250 miles

After my awful experience with my first brand new 1999 Ford Contour car, I decided to trade-in my car for a 2002 Honda Accord LX for I was told that Honda vehicles are very reliable and very good on the road up until July 1, 2008 when I find out that I needed a new transmission. I knew that all vehicles sometime later on will need to replace it's transmission but I did not expect this from a Honda Accord which I only had for 6 years. The service adviser at the Honda dealership here in Reno told me that the cost of a new transmission for my Honda Accord LX will cost about $3,100 and if you asked me, $3,100 is a lot of money to pull out of the pocket. I asked about the warranties and he said that the warranties were only good at 36,000 miles or 3 years of having the vehicle. I don't have an extended warranty, but I was told that even with an extended warranty, it will not cover a new transmission replacement. With all the complaints I see for the 2002 Honda Accords, The American Honda Motor Co. Inc should recall 2002 Honda Accords to replace its defective transmission. For those of you who has the same car problems as I am, please email me at petchay8099@yahoo.com and let me know how did you go about solving this problem. I am going to write the to the American Honda Motor Co., Inc. Honda Consumer Affairs Dept. to complain. This is the address given at the Honda warranty information booklet:

I had heard that the 6th generation of transmissions for these Honda's wasn't good. I just trust Honda and thought maybe it is just a tale passed around, but sure enough the transmission went out. I will give it to Honda that thing lasted until I got it to the dealership and right before I got it on the lot, warning lights galore started popping up. Thankfully I got the extended warranty on the Certified Pre-Used or it looks like I would be out some change, They are going to completely replace it since it was so far gone. I just got the transmission flushed when I brought it in for the regular service so don't know if that helped or not. I Will still trust Honda because if it was a different make i would probably be sitting on the side of the road well before this.

I have not reported to Honda Corp. yet,b/c Reading the other post it may not change anything.I believe I will drive until I am forced to make this repair.

Accord EX 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 49,000 miles

My transmission was having problems shifting from 1st to 2nd and had limited power to climb small inclines. I made an appointment to have my transmission checked out at the dealer. The dealer called and said the transmission would need to be replaced and would cost me around $2300 plus a $48.00 diagnostic fee since it was no longer covered by the 3yr/36,000 mile warranty. The service person also said that they had checked and the vehicle was not covered under an extended warranty. When I indicated my displeasure about the transmission failure with only 49,000 miles on it I was told that they could provide a telephone number I could call to see if part of the cost could be split with Honda America. I was livid. I left the car at the dealer overnight. The next morning the service person called and said that they had run the V.I.N. and that my vehicle was indeed covered by extended warranty and that my cost would be $50.00 for a deductible. (There was no apology given for the erroneous information which was given the night before about the lack of an extended warranty.) The transmission is supposed to be a remanufactured Honda tranny with all Honda parts. The warranty will not be extended further so the warranty will expire May 2009 no matter how few miles are placed on the "re manufactured Honda transmission". I will most likely sell this car within the next two years as I don't want to risk the same problem occurring without any warranty coverage. I thought Hondas were supposed to go at least 100,000 miles without major repairs and make it to 200,000+ miles. If Honda would own up to the faulty transmissions on the 2002 models like they did on the 2000-2001 cars and do the right thing to correct the problem with the owners I would respect that. However, their denial of the problem and lack of a positive solution which meets customer satisfaction requirements has placed a substantial blemish on their reputation. Are Hondas reliable and do they really desire repeat buyers?

Before I talk about my car specifically, I want to point out that the Honda Accord is exactly what we as Americans need right now, because if you buy one, you'll be taking alternative transportation a lot, and thereby cutting your fuel consumption.

Now for the details, this is the sequel to the story in which my new (used) Honda Accord SE's tranny went out on the way home from the dealership. The car is beautiful--white with a spoiler and moonroof...Ok, it's old, but to me, it's a beautiful car, and I love the remote locks--my 1990 Honda's locks don't even work, let alone remotely. Anyhow, the first two weeks I owned it, it was in the shop getting used tranny installed (under warranty). Last week (not even 10,000 miles later), it developed a problem getting into and out of 1st gear. Today, nine days after it was towed, the mechanic said he thinks it's the torque converter. So the takeaway is, with gas prices soaring, maybe you should consider a Honda Accord. Or if you're already considering a Honda Accord, maybe you should also consider a new bike and an apartment on the busline!

I am very upset I bought a used 2002 Accord EX put maybe 10,000 miles on it and the engine light came on so I thought probably a o2 sensor took it to auto zone let them check the code came back a shifting problem. So I got online and chills run up my spine when I start reading about all the problems people are having with 2002 Honda transmissions not little problems but nightmare problems. So the first thing I do is take it to the dealer they call me back a couple of hours later and tell me I need a new transmission wow just like the nightmare everyone is having online they tell me they are going to try to get Honda to help with the cost after a week and a half and me calling Honda they say they will pay a measly 10 percent. of a 2600 dollar repair and my car has less than 100,000 miles. I have found a guy that says he will rebuild it for 1000 bucks I am going to fix it and sell it and buy a Toyota. The sad thing is I have owned 6 Honda's and have always paid a little more for one so I wouldn't have to worry about a major repair now I will never own another one so I guess it will cost Honda a little bit more down the road than it did me.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 110,000 miles

We own a 2002 Honda Accord EX. We purchased the vehicle new and purchased the extended warranty to cover the car for 6 years and 100,000 miles. I do get my cars serviced as per the owners manual recommendations. The car is mainly used for my wife to drive to and from to work. She drives the freeway and the car now has just over 100,000 miles on it. We took it to our mechanic, who works on only Hondas, for service and timing belt and my wife told him of some problems in the car shifting. He told her that Hondas had several problems with the transmissions on this year car and he thought they had a recall or were fixing the cars for customers due to several complaints. We contacted the local Honda dealership, Spreen Honda, who advised us we needed a new transmission. They told us the cost would be $3200.00. They contacted Honda of America who told them that we do not qualify for any assistance. I contacted Honda of America and am waiting to get a call from the case worker. If I had known of the problems with the transmissions I would not have purchased a Honda. I was told that these were suppose to be one of the most reliable cars on the road, but for a transmission to go at only 100,000 miles is ridiculous. I have owned Fords, Dodges and Toyotas in the past and I have put between 175,000-200,000 miles on those vehicles and have never had a transmission problem before. If Honda does not offer some assistance in this matter i will definitely trade the car in for another car. It will not be a Honda though. It is too bad as my wife loves the car, but it needs to be reliable. That is why i purchased the ar in the first place.

Accord LX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 65,000 miles

My Honda Accord 2002, with 65,000 miles, started to jerk forward, when stopped on a red light you feel the car wants to jump forward, several times I was afraid of rear ending other cars in front of me, so I tried to keep extra distance from the other cars, "you know how it works, you keep distance for safety and another SOB gets in front of you". Anyway, I took the car to Auto repair shop "Merchants" and I asked them to check the car, they recommended flushing all the fluids (Oil, Brake fluid, Trans fluid, radiator), the cost to me was about $800 which included new brake pads. The car drove OK for couple thousand miles, then it started the slipping, jerking again. At about 70,000 miles I took the car for Oil change at Good Year where they told me that Trans fluid is, dirty (black) and they recommended flushing the Trans. I took the car back to "Merchants" and showed them the report from Good Year, the said that they will repeat the job (flushing the fluids) at no charge. After Flushing the trans for the second time, the car drove OK for few days, then it started jerking, slipping, and specially when I make a turn the car will slow down as if the gear is not engaged, when I push on the gas I get no reaction (speed wise), some times I have to switch between the different gears to get it engaged, recently, many times I have to go to full stop and shift into P the to D fro the gear to get engaged. The situation was very dangerous several times and about to cause accidents, for sure attracted the attention of other drivers and many of them showed angry gestures. It is an accident waiting to happen any time I drive the Honda Accord. Couple of days ago, the TCS light came on for long time, yesterday the TCS light went off, but the Check Engine Light came on and stayed on. I am not sure what is the problem, but after reading this Forum, I am convinced that the TRANS is FAILING, I hope that Honda will honor a replacement, since the car is Low Mileage, about 72,000 miles. I will be taking the car tomorrow to a Honda Dealer in Northern Virginia.

Accord SE 4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 71,900 miles

The transmission started slipping at 71,900 miles. Initially, it was slow to speed up from 10-20 mph, and instead of shifting from 25000 RPM, it would take 35000 RPM to do the same function. I switched air filters and then flush the fluid in weeks 2 and 3 in an effort to stave off more expensive repairs. The problem was usually only observable when the car was cold. In weeks 3+, higher gears started slipping, and the car needed more warm-up before it drove as normally. I was quoted $1600 to repair it (in addition to the $200 or so for the other fixes) and I am not happy! I am debating trading it in entirely or risk more problems later. As it is, I can still get a decent trade-in value. I'm going back to Toyota.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 65,000 miles

I was driving my car yesterday when out of no where it started to take a long time
to shift into gear and started to make a jerking movement. I immediately pulled
over and shut off the car. I waited about two minutes and started it back up again
and started to drive it. Again....it started to jerk very hard when I would step on
the gas peddle. After a minute or two, the malfunction light turned on. When I got
home, I contacted my Honda dealer, (Honda cars of Boston). They told me I should
bring the car in to have a diagnostic check on it to find out what the problem was...
plus I would have to pay $100 to have this test done. I then decided to take it to
Autozone where they perform the same diagnostic check for FREE!!!!...Yes FREE!!!
The diagnostic check came back that the there was a problem with the transmission.
What???? My car is only 5 years old with only 65,000 miles and there is a
transmissions problem???? I couldn't believe it!!!! So I did some research on line
to see if anyone else has had a problem like this and I found out that several people
are complaining about the same thing. When I bought my Accord I did so because
I thought it was a great car and is known to last forever. I am baffled about this.
So I then contact the dealer again and I tell them about the diagnostic test. The dealer
tells me that they don't fix transmissions there and that my car because it is a 2002
would not be covered to have the transmission problem fixed under a class action suit
that was done for the 2000- 2001 models. He then gave me a phone # to call the
Honda headquarters. I called and spoke to someone there and he told me the same
thing. He then gave me a case # and told me a case mgr would contact me in 1
to 2 days. He was going to put my complaint in as a goodwill repair. Hopefully
this works!!! I'm very disappointed with what happened to my car. I'va already
contacted the atty general's office to file a complaint about this.
I believe there should be some type of class action suit or be entitled to a recall
and not have to pay for the cost to repair this problem. It is a very expensive
problem to fix and Honda needs to step to the plate and take care of this problem!!!
