CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure & problems with the stereo backlight failing. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000. Transmission failure has been a huge problem for the Accord & several other Honda models all through the early 2000s model years. Honda extended the transmission warranty to 93 months/109k miles for the 2000-2001 Accord as a class action lawsuit settlement, but owners of other Accord model years with transmission problems are out of luck.

The stereo backlight problem has been an issue ever since these Accords were only a few years old. Honda eventually issued a recall which covered the repair for 7 years/100k miles, which was nice while it lasted but now that period is over. Honda initially replaced the entire radio ($800) but eventually began replacing just the PCB which at ~$300 is much cheaper. That sounds like a deal, but keep in mind we're talking about a backlight bulb that costs $2 to fix in most other cars.

The contact owns a 2004 Honda Accord. The contact stated that the radio lights were inoperative, making it difficult to make changes to the radio while driving on the highway. The dealer diagnosed that the radio would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified, but denied any assistance with repairs of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 60,000.

While at a stop light, my car just shut off for no apparent reason. Prior to that I would have glitches (on/off) while listening to the radio but this happened while I was driving. I didn't notice the problem before but it just kept shutting off even though the gas tank was full and the battery in it is new. I took it into a mechanic for a diagnostic but nothing came up in their sensor. The mechanic looked at all of the connections and couldn't sense that there was an issue. I know that I didn't buy a new car but it had a full inspection. I'm worried that although it passed it's safety inspection if it is truly safe to drive since it keeps shutting off while driving and especially coming to stops.

I have no lights in the top of the car; A/C lights nor A/C work and the door lights. I feel very unsafe not being able to see when I get in or out of my vehicle. The seat belt tightens up whether brakes are applied or not. Not having any dash lights are essential to the safety of any vehicle. Want assist!!!!!!!!!

The lights on the radio and ac pannel do not work, the lcd does not display the radio stations or the ac temperatures. Now I find that the cost is over $800. Also I remember that when I brought the car in for service, in the past, the technician asked me if I had any problems with the dash light, seems he already knew about this problem over a year ago.

My wife had parked in a parking space with a very slight downward slope. There was another space ahead of her. She had been driving in a heavy rain. The car was operating normally. When she returned about 15 minutes later, the brake pedal felt hard. She started the engine and shifted into reverse. The car started coasting forward. The brakes remained hard and didn't stop the car. She stopped it by shifting to park, then turned off the engine. She repeated the attempt to back out of the space - same result. No error messages appeared. She called, and I drove to the scene. The rain had stopped. I felt the hardness of the brake pedal, although it felt more like a stiff spring than a non-power brake pedal to me. I pumped the springy pedal a few times; it didn't change. I started the engine, keeping my foot lightly on the brake. When the engine started, the stiffness immediately disappeared, the pedal felt normal, the transmission worked, and the car drove normally. I didn't get to experience the transmission problem. Later, I could find no problem with the brakes. The linkage has only a very slight amount of play, as it should. I depleted the vacuum supply by pumping the brakes with the engine off. The pedal felt very hard, unlike the springy feel in the parking lot. I have a phd in electrical engineering and a lot of car repair experience. This background leads me to conclude that it is extremely unlikely for the unrelated braking and transmission systems to fail simultaneously, and then recover simultaneously. There has to be another common cause, which leads me to suspect the computer system or possibly a sensor, particularly because this happened after driving in a heavy rain. The postulated failure mode is a compromised computer system that could partially activate the ABS system and also fail to operate the reverse solenoid valve in the transmission.

The front instrument panel (the panel that contains the buttons to turn on/off the defrost, heater, air conditioner, radio) failed to illuminate in April of 2009. After getting in my car, putting my key in the ignition, and turning the headlights on I noticed that the panel did not illuminate. Typically, the panel illuminates after turning on the headlights. This day, after turning on the headlights the panel did not illuminate and has never there after illuminated since that date. At first I thought it to be an issue with a fuse (since it is an electrical issue) so I sought the owners manual to see which fuse controlled the panel. After having difficulty understanding the fuse layout I searched online for help and that is when I discovered that many other Honda owners have had this problem and that it in fact is not a problem caused by a simple fuse. This is a significant safety issue at night due to the fact that it is very difficult to find the defrost button on the panel when it is not illuminated and on rainy nights or other nights when the defrost is needed be very obstructive to the clear visibility of the driver of they can not access the defrost when needed. Because of this safety issue it is highly recommended that a recall is activated to replace and fix the electrical malfunctions of the panel that I have detailed.

The display has gone out. This is a known fact for Honda. They extended the warranty. Many experience after the warranty. Circuit board is faulty and they know it, why not replace it for owners who spent money on their product. This takes away from some visibility inside vehicle. I'm told it may be a heat issue...

Ignition problem- can not turn key in ignition switch, can not turn on car. Left me stranded several times. When searching complaints there has been previous complaints for same problem. Why no recall for problem. I am told it would be very expensive to fix. Air bag light keeps coming on- I have never received any recall notice.

All lights of display box (for radio, A/C, audio, car info, temperature, clock, etc), display panel, and backlights of all switches on that box, such as heater on/off, A/C, front and rear defroster, temperature, and all controls about electronics, are gone, I.e. not displayed. Functions are working but backlight isn't working. It is a serious problem for safety. For example, in the night when you drive highway, you can't find the defroster switch to turn on to remove fog of rear window. You can't adjust the channel at the night when you need to hear emergency radio channel. No info about car at all. Honda admitted that it had a problem and so they extended the warrant period, but this problem appeared irregularly. For me, just after passing the warrant period they said (100K). It should be recalled. I found a lot of complaints and same issues in the internet. Please investigate and ask Honda to fix this problem whatever their warrant period. Thank you for your effort!

The interior lighting on the radio and other components went out. It is dangerous to be driving and trying to figure out where fan and other buttons are in the dark. I should not need to use a flashlight to figure out how to clear fog from the windows. If I have a related accident my insurance company would consider it my fault even though it is a design or manufacturing defect.

On December 30, 2011 the back-light on my radio stereo as well as the A/C panel went out. This poses a safety issue because 1. during storms or bad weather, I cannot see what station to turn the radio for tornado warnings or weather updates. 2. to adjust A/C or heater settings, I must take my Focus off the road to turn on the overhead light and adjust settings. 3. in weather conditions such as high fog or where you need to use a defrost, I must must take my Focus off the road to turn on the overhead light and adjust settings.

The consult circuit board that lights up where to find the defroster, heater, stereo, ac is totally dark. This is a safety issue and I must turn on a light to see the controls and I feel this is a great safety issue and should be a recall for all Honda's since I have read on line how many people had this problem. I was never notified by Honda that they would fix it free (possible) if you get your car there before 7yrs or 100,000 miles but they keep that very quiet. I was so busy paying to keep my home and Honda never sent me any word on this and problem.
