We are the original owners of this Honda and I have owned exclusively Hondas since 1978. I'm trying to determine whether there is a known problem with 1998 Honda CR-V automatic transmission or we just have a lemon. The transmission failed in 2003 when the CR-V had fewer than 20,000 miles but the warranty did not cover because the CR-V was purchased in 1998. After writing Honda and spending $6000 and about 5 weeks (we live in the US Virgin Islands) to get a new rebuilt transmission, Honda did send me $1000 toward the repair. Last month, the transmission failed again and the Honda dealer on St. Thomas says that the transmission needs to be rebuilt. The current transmission had less than 10,000 miles on it! Is there a known problem with 1998 CR-Vs? Is the transmission failing due to an under-powered engine and the fact that we are constantly driving on very steep hills?
