I do not know what Honda is going to do about my misfortune. By the looks of it, not much. Between my wife and I, we have owned eight Honda vehicles. We are a Honda family to say the least. To their credit, this is the only one we have had an issue with. This is a big issue. Looking at the complaints, it seems Honda does not want to pay up for replacing the engine. I would like to see them at least sell me the block at cost and I would pay for the labor. Anything to help supplement and or defray this large expense would go a long way in my mind whether to purchase another Honda in the future or not. I just found out about the crack today. I will call my dealer tomorrow to see if there is anything they are willing to do to keep coming back and purchasing more Honda's. I am not holding my breath. Shame on Honda for not taking a more pro active role in confronting this problem.

Two nights ago, I noticed a sweet burning smell and a puff of steam coming from under the hood of my 2006 Civic. Up to that point, the car has been trouble free and I was a happy owner (long time honda owner) -- next day on the way to work the same thing happened again, so I took it directly to the dealer. Got called a couple of hours later telling me I HAD A CRACKED BLOCK and the car needed a NEW SHORT BLOCK. Dealer offered NO HELP (KEYES WOODLAND HILLS HONDA) - so I called American Honda -- still waiting to hear back from a case worker.
I AM SHOCKED at the number of owners of 2006 Honda Civics who have suffered the same failure! THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

Engine blocks should not fail for so many vehicles. This should have been a Honda covered repair based on a product defect. The over heating occurred while I was commuting to work some 70 miles from home. Took it to the dealer near work. They were great, the problem was covered by by extended warranty and they gave me a 2009 civic to use as a loaner while they made the repair. We've had extended warranties for almost every car we've had for 20 years, except for a $1000 covered repair on an older Subaru, this is the first time one has kicked in to cover a big repair. I'd continue to get extended warranties because I really don't trust the car manufacturers to come clean on defects.

I am so mad with Honda. One day I was drving and all the sudden smoke came out from my hood. I just figured a hose busted or something like that. But no. It was a cracked block. This will cost me so much money. I have heard Honda even changed it and beefed up those areas on their newer models. I am only twenty years old but itf they do not recall my car I will never purchase another Honda in my life.

This is a shocker!! leaking smurf blue anti freeze from my 2006 Honda civic so changed the water pump, also changed the belt because there was a flaw in the way the belt wraps around pulley, "too much tension on water pump" added the new belt, put everything back like a pro. Then come to find out it is still leaking Coolant!! We then discover that there is a crack in the block. Honda won't help, says I am on my own. I will NEVER buy a Honda product again!! poor service when there product fails! Nice looking car but I wish my Honda would have made it to 200.000 miles not die at 100.000 miles.

Hello, I have the same problem... sweet smell, thermostat didn't indicate any high temp, my Honda is my baby, always serviced, she started leaking coolant yesterday in the front side of the block. Thank goodness it happened under the best circumstances. I had the Dealership tow my car to them. I just got off the phone with the Honda Dealership & it's a cracked engine block. The manager assured me that it is covered under the power train warranty but he's not sure how quickly he can locate all of the parts that's needed for the job. I don't know how/ when I'll get her back. I'm so disappointed that Honda. I am waiting to see if they intend to supply me with a rental car during this ordeal.

I have to say I have *really* enjoyed this car up until this point. I have had absolutely zero problems and Honda has been wonderful with any servicing and recalls especially given that I have such high mileage on the car.
What angers me is that they have known FULLY about this issue with the engine blocks since 2008, yet for those of us who are having it happen, Honda will not compensate us whatsoever for a design flaw that THEY are responsible for. I have taken good care of the engine, had it serviced when it was required, and this is what I get.
Lucky for me, the place I took my car to found an engine with 2 kms on it (written off in a road test) and will only cost me around $2700 installed and for another $250 they will add a LIFETIME warranty, which I'm seriously considering since the last engine obviously didn't do so well.

Cracked engine block...just like many others with a high mileage 2006 Honda Civic. I got little sympathy from the Honda Service Department; they were willing to reduce the bill by $200! And, in an attempt to trade-in the vehicle, the Sales Department was willing to give me $1000-1500 for my car (depending on what new vehicle I purchased). I even called American Honda Customer Service and they weren't willing to help out either. According to the Representative, because my car was beyond warranty and this is not a recall situation, there was nothing that they could do. She even went so far as to tell me to discuss further with the Honda Dealership OR take the car to another repair shop!
I bought this car because I thought a Honda would last....boy, was I wrong!

My 2006 Honda Civic EX just started smoking out of nowhere, i pulled off to the side of the road immediately and shut off the car. There were no warning signs and I always get all my fluids checked with proper maintenance. I opened up the hood and there was coolant spewing from the front of the engine. I got it towed to an auto shop and they said it was a cracked engine block. This is a $3000-$5000 fix, but luckily I am covered under the powertrain warranty that comes with the car. So Im getting a new engine, but I'll never buy Honda again. I recommend the same to all my friends.

So I bought this car used from a dealer. It had high mileage, but, "Hey, it's a Honda" I reassured myself. In fact, I sought this car out for the exact reason I bought it.
You know the rest, noticed some antifreeze on the ground, car running hot. No biggie, it's just a hose or something. I took it to my local garage and they diagnosed a cracked engine block, right over the coolant channels -- just where the technical bulletin says it will occur. Estimated repair cost is $3800. I just bought the car in October!
I contact my dealer and they are going to chat with the regional/district folks. We'll see what they say.
Interestingly, Honda has apparently known about this problem long enough to have redesigned their engine block to beef up the areas that are prone to cracking. Infers to me that the engineers realized it was defective design. Soooo, if you put in a 2006-2008 block in your car, you are at risk for it happening again.

I guess I'm with the rest of the people that purchased a 2006 Honda Civic. It is sitting at the Honda shop with a cracked engine block. I was driving down the road and hit a pot hole which I thought caused a hose to bust because fluid was dripping from underneath the car. I took it to the Honda Dealer in Warner Robins, GA and was advised that the engine block had cracked. The mechanic said that it was a common problem with Civics. It seemed that everyone at the Honda dealer knew that this was a problem with these cars. The mechanic advised that he didn't think the pot hole caused the crack. He thought it was a weak spot in the engine block. I was advised that this was NOT a recall and of course my warranty was up. It seems to me that if this is a known problem to ALL people that work with Honda (because they have been notified by Honda that this is a problem) and (after reading the complaints on this website) all Honda Civic owners, Honda should step up and fix their mistake without any expense to the owner. That is why people buy Honda's. They EXPECT a quality product and EXPECT Honda to stand behind their products. I have been told that it will cost $3300.00 to fix my car. I have not discussed this with the Manager yet, but I plan on it. I have filed a claim with my insurance company and I am waiting to here a response. I expect if my insurance will not cover the cracked engine, I will try to get some satisfaction from Honda. If that doesn't work, I will go to the local news station and get the attention off of Toyota. If anyone wants to be interviewed and voice their opinion, just let me know. I will update how Honda responds later.

My car ran hot going to the store so I just turned around and went back home. I took it the very next day to a mechanic that informed me that I have a cracked blocked that he found out was a common problem in the 2006 model Honda Civic. I then called my Honda dealer that then gave me the 800 number for Honda to file a complaint. I was told that a case Manager would call me back...I haven't heard from anyone yet.
I will let you know if Honda helps me out on this...I sure hope so cause I have only had this car 8 months and still owe too much money for such a costly problem that I feel is a manufacturers defect that Honda should fix . I feel like Honda will stand behind their product. I don't think they will want to tarnish their image. I am a firm believer in Hondas...I have owned 4 and never have I had a problem. We were planning to trade in our 2004 Civic on a new one this year...but I guess that depends on the outcome of this problem.
Update from Feb 22, 2010: I reported my cracked block to Honda the day after it happened and they responded the very next day. Even though I have 67,000 miles on my car they have agreed to pay $2500.00 of the cost to repair which is $3500.00 Now I am pleased that they responded so quickly but $1000.00 is still alot of money to me for something that they have admitted is a problem that they know about.
I am going to call them back to see if they can do more but at the same time I know that I am passed the warranty by 6000 so I guess I should be happy that they are willing to help. I would like to know what others think on this...feel free to respond.

My mechanic said a cracked engine block for 2006 Civic is becoming an evident problem. He showed me an alert (that he pays for) stating what the problem is and where to look for the problem. It can crack either in front or back. The alert also said to ask Honda for a "goodwill" consideration for fixing the problem, however, my local dealer said absolutely not... even though we still owe Honda 9300.00 for the car! I'm very upset. Already contacted AP to see if they are ready to take on Honda the way they have Toyota. People need to know!

I guess Iam # 48. I used to love my 2006 Honda Civic until today when I was on my way to class when I had to pull over on the side of the road because my car went hot and the engine was smoking! Im a girl and had no idea what was going on luckily my boyfriend is a mechanic and came and met me. When we went to look under the hood we saw coolant on the ground, once we popped my hood he filled it up with water and took it to his shop. I used his vehicle to go to class (after missing my first class) in between classes he informed me that it was a cracked engine block! ARE YOU SERIOUS?? The service adviser at Honda told us it was a huge problem and its not uncommon that he sees this all the time. WHAT??? AND HONDA HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS AND IS NOT PAYING FOR THIS? Hopefully the warranty covers it but I will have to wait until Monday when an inspector from the warranty company can get out to the dealership to inspect it to make sure I didn't neglect the problem. HOW CAN I? HONDA NEEDS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM ASAP! If my car is not covered and Honda tells me I will have to pay out of pocket I will be contacting my Lawyer!!!

My 2006 Civic LX began to have a sweet smell in the cabin last week...coolant right...right. I noticed coolant on my driveway and in the lot at work. Topped off fluid but more spots on drive way the next day. I drove it less than 3 miles and it began to overheat. I took it to Midas, closest to home with a hot engine and they told me that my engine block was cracked. I have it at Honda now. It has 58,000 miles so I'm expecting it to be covered under powertrain. They told me the repair would be about 6K if it is not covered. I don't see why it would not be covered but these things can get ugly. I will let you know. After this repair, depending how it gets handled, I'm done with Honda. This is my first but they had been so good to my family in the past. 2000 more miles and I would have been screwed! I will keep everyone posted.

Ok, About 3 months out of the dealership, I needed a new transmission. Now I need a new engine! Yesterday, I developed a crack in my engine block about 105 miles away from home. A mechanic checked it out today by putting in water into the radiator and then applying pressure. The water clearly leaked from the engine block.
Judging by the number of complaints on this topic, it seems to be a design problem and needs to be addressed by the manufacturer!
I will be calling Honda tomorrow. Will update as I find out what their take on it is.
Update from Feb 8, 2010: After spending a week trying to work it out with Honda, I find that I have to pay for it out of pocket...$3100
I proposed two different options to Honda but they denied both:
1. Help cover the cost of fixing the car
2. Give me a "special" deal on the 2010 Civic or a good trade in value on my 2006
I have 132K miles on my car. The reasons I think I should be entitled to anything from Honda is because:
1. There are so many people complaining about this problem
2. Honda recognizes that this problem exists in TSB 08-044
If it is a design or manufacturing flaw, Honda should help fix it regardless of mileage.
Unfortunately, Honda does not think so!
Update from Sep 3, 2010: ****Received a letter from Honda today. They have extended the warranty on engine blocks for Civics 2006-2008. Anyone who has or had the cracked engine block issue, regardless of mileage, will be reimbursed. ****
Update from Jan 25, 2011: Around September or so, I got a check from Honda for the full amount that I spent in January getting the new engine block. My car had 132K miles on it at the time.
Contact Honda and tell them that you have this problem. Have your receipt/diagnosis handy. Mail it to them with the form they will send you along with diagnosis, proof that you fixed it and proof of payment and you will most likely be reimbursed. They seem to have extended the warranty coverage problem to 8 years, unlimited mileage.
Faith in Honda restored!

Right now it is at the dealer and the factory rep is looking to see if they will cover the cost of repair. I did a google search and find that I am not alone. Since this seems to happen to 2006 Civics with higher mileage, are we just the tip of the iceberg? Maybe Toyota will use this to draw attention away from their current mess.
I will update once I hear from the dealer.
Update from Feb 3, 2010: The dealership got back to me. $4,400 to fix and since I had a good maintenance record Honda will pick up a little more than half of the cost. It will take a week and a half.
Not completely happy, but at least it will be resolved.

I have a 2006 Civic that has started overheating. So much to the point, that I have to put antifreeze/water in it every day before I leave for work. My boyfriend is a mechanic, and he is pretty sure that it is my block. Also, someone from the Honda dealership said that it is a major problem in the 2006-2007 civic. So, I need to get it checked out, but I'm scared to find out how much it is going to cost me to repair. Only knows how many other people are having the exact same problems. My first car was a Honda and it ran great up until 213,000 miles. I bought this car with 32 miles on it and it has been nothing but problems. My couson has the same exact car, and her block cracked at 56,000. Def. a Honda issue!

2006 Honda Civic EX with 84,000 miles. I am always up-to-date on scheduled maintenance and oil changes. On 01/08/2010. I noticed the anti-freeze on my garage floor. I topped it off so I could drive it to the nearest repair shop. They informed me that the engine block had a crack in it and the anti-freeze was leaking directly through the crack.
Honda quoted me $6,500 to get a new block with installation. The car clinic quoted me $3,500 for installation of a used block with 34,000 miles on it.
Not sure what I will do. I called Honda's customer service line and they said they haven't had more than 1% of their 2006 Civics have the problem so they will not be doing a recall. This has to be a manufactures issue. Any advice?

Guess I'm Next. I'll be calling the dealer in the morning.
Yesterday I noticed the temp gauge running really high, but not red. No unusual spells or visual signs of leakage. Turned around and went home.
Today I checked and it was low a gallon of antifreeze. Topped it off, no leaks. Ran the engine and drove around the block until it was warm. No noticeable leaks (it went somewhere).
Checked the oil, really hard to tell the color with the orange dip-stick. Then removed the fill cap and I cursed... really loud... I think I scared the dogs. Dirty white foam on the inside of the fill cap. I don't need a mechanic to tell me where the coolant went.
I drive the car every day to work. Its garage kept and is never abused (I don't let the kids drive it). I'm really curious what Honda will say tomorrow. They're supposed to be one of the best. Guess we'll find out.
Update from Jan 18, 2010: Had it towed to my mechanic ($7 with AAA) and they couldn't find anything wrong. Changed the oil.
I've been driving it for a week now, about 50 miles a day without incident. I did top off the coolant reserver a couple times, it would appear that its using a small amount of coolant. Made an appointment with Honda to investigate.
More to come...
Update from Jan 28, 2010: Dealer at least gave me a loaner while they replaced the head gasket. Quoted price was $1350, that was the total for the repair. Disappointing that it happened.
Update from Feb 18, 2010: Car is back in the shop. Wasn't the head gasket after all, the block IS cracked. At least they're going to credit me the $1350 for the previous repair. They're replacing it with a 20K mile engine for $1900 out of pocket. They DID give me a loaner (2010 civic EX). At this point, I don't have any options. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for a recall. I don't have a complaint with the dealer, but HONDA needs to acknowledge this problem. I just hope my 'new' engine isn't an 06 or 07

I want to go ahead and add my 2 cents worth to this deal. I have the same issue as all of you have previously state. My car has about 76,500 miles on it. I purchased the car in 2008 from a Honda dealer from the certified pre-owned lot. Until this, this car has been the best I have ever owned. I have been through a bmw, volkswagen, ford as well. I did purchase the Honda extended care warranty package. They said that this will be covered under that agreement. I pick my car up tomorrow, if I have to pay, I will write and update about it.
Like others here, I am uneasy moving forward with this car, seeing the problem this has had. Will it happen with the next engine they put in, or will i have to go back through this again?(rhetorical) I know it won't be under warranty next time... It seems Honda is taking responsibility to an extent on this issue. Which it should. For me to buy a new one, they will really have to convince me that MAJOR errors like this will not happen again.

Just thought I would add to the list. Did not have any problems on the 1992 civic I owned that had 440 000 on it before I sold it. My 2006 civic only has (had) 145000 on the engine but now has 87000 on the replaced engine. I plan on sending a letter to Honda canada stating the problem and looking for compensation but highly doubt it reading all other posts. My cost to put in a used motor was $2000, not bad but still way too much for such a new car. Very disappointing.

Looks like I am number 31 on the 2006 Honda cracked engine block problem. Day after Christmas, all coolant somehow leaked out on my way home from my sister's. Barely made it home - the temperature gauge was one notch from hitting the "H". Diagnosis this afternoon is cracked engine block. My car has only 60,000 miles on it and I live in Dallas, TX, where winters are not that cold. Absolutely not a coincidence that so many of us having the same problem. Have gone out to my state's lemon law website - there are designated attorneys for the state and have filled out the information there. What a wonderful holiday. 2006 Honda with no earlier problems overheats with no warning. no antifreeze in it after it was just checked in October. Honda of America originally offers to help recognizing....what ....the engine defect????but now the cylinder head is warped and the cost is going into the 1400 range. There are currently 25 postings with this problems (perhaps more we don't know about). This was a manufacturing defect. Should we all begin calling Honda of America or should we just leave the car in parts at the dealership? (By the way, the dealership was pleasant!) There is something wrong with this car There is a listing of cracked engine blocks with 11,000 miles and some with 86,000 miles. We were planning to take a trip in it. Perhaps it would have caught their eye if we were on the highway and were in an accident. Anybody else have $1400 to throw away????

Wow, this is a big problem, and I can see I'm not alone in this. My '06 Honda Civic, at 82k miles, was just diagnosed with a cracked engine block just like all of you. It's the middle of a pretty frigid New England December and just in time for Christmas. I have an extended warranty, 5/100, so hopefully it will be covered. My local dealership informed me that this is a big defect and seems to be more and more common. He was not surprised to find what he found. I will have to keep this updated as to what they do to fix the problem. Honda needs to do something about this.

BOUGHT THIS fricking vehicle brand new. I'm 12K out of my extended warranty and I think this should be a serious recall when so many people are having this problem with this vehicle has been maintained through the dealer and myself this is sooooo STUPID. I should not have to put in a used engine when I bought this vehicle brand f*cking new its obviously a problem with them, not me.

I bought this car new and it has been meticulously maintained by the dealership, drvien mostly highway miles and not subjected to any abuse. It only has about 65,000 miles on it. All of a sudden, driving in slow, 20 mph rush-hour traffic, it just stopped working and was billowing steam. No warning lights, no nothing! The temperature gauge wasn't even rising. The car did nothing to alert that there was a problem until the car would barely move and was pulled off to the side of the road. THEN lights started coming on. TOO LATE!!! The engine got so hot that the plastic dipstick melted. Dealership seemed to know exactly what the problem was when the car arrived and the symptoms were described to them.
In case you're wondering, it's under Honda TSB 08-044. As I understand it, there were problems/design flaws in the engine block which resulted in weak points that are prone to failure/cracking. And I had bought a Honda because they're "reliable."

Trying to be careful with my money as a semi-retired school teacher I chose to go with a Honda Civic back in 2006. I bought it new and have had all the regular maintenance done at the dealership. I recently pulled up to a stoplight and noticed "smoke" coming out of the hood near the drivers side. I was only a block from the dealer so I pulled in there and could smell antifreeze when I got out of the car. One of the service managers checked it and could tell that there was an antifreeze leak but couldn't tell where it was coming from. He added coolant and we set up a service appointment. Next time I drove, same thing only I ended up along side the highway. Another gallon of coolant and I made it to the dealership where I left the car. I was SHOCKED to get a call the next day saying that the engine block was cracked! WHAT! I took excellent care of the car. Aren't engine blocks supposed to last the lifetime of the car if you drive carefully and get all the service done? My Civic hasn't turned out to save me any money. I wouldn't recommend Honda Civics to anyone.

Understand where you are all coming from. I bought a Honda Civic as I knew that their reputation for high mileage and low maintenance costs was what I was counting on. I bought the vehicle brand-new. Kept up with all maintenance at the required times and never abused the car keeping it in a garage in winter and cruised at 120 km/hr max. All highway driving. Was informed yesterday that I had a cracked engine block and would need it replaced. Being a female , I thought they were joking. Oh No!! The gentlemen laughed and said some engines are good , some are bad. Unbelievable !!!!
Never had any warning what so ever. Not sure what to do now.

I purchased my 2006 Honda Civic based on the reliability and reputation of Honda. Within the first year of ownership, both front struts went out. This weekend I smelled the sweet scent of coolant in my garage. I moved my car and discovered a large puddle of coolant on the garage floor. I poured a gallon of coolant in the vehicle and took it in to the shop...I was thinking a hose probably need to be replaced. NOPE! There is a crack in the engine block! Are you kidding me?! A crack in the block of a 2006 vehicle, wow that is non-quality garbage. Furthermore, I called the Honda shop, as well as the national Honda number, and they do not have a recall in place or anything in place to assist us - "the valued customers." The customer service rep. mentioned that they could note the file and contact me if a recall is made in the future - if this becomes a larger issue. I asked if they would like me to send them the URL to this page. Two years ago I had 2 Mazda in my garage; now I have 2 Hondas...I am starting to wonder if I made a mistake. Does anyone have the e-mail address to the CEO for Honda (Takeo Fukui)? I would like for us to notify him of this issue his vehicles are presenting to us. I am so disappointed.
Update from Dec 3, 2009: I wanted to update my complaint with some very good news. I brought my car into a Honda dealership and informed them of how disappointed I was with my vehicle and Honda. I informed them of this site and stated how the frequency of this problem indicated that there was a manufacturing issue. Keep in mind that my warranty period was over, and Honda was not obligated to help me. The total for parts and labor came to $7,200. Fortunately, I dealt with some very understanding and customer centric Honda Service professionals. Through Honda's goodwill program, Honda took care of most of the bill. I only had to pay $1,200. I now have a new engine, and Honda has proven to me their commitment to their customers. I am very satisfied with Honda, and I highly recommend the company...they have outstanding customer service.

My last car was a VW with too many issues to list, so when I went to get my first brand new car out of college, I elected to go with a Honda Civic... practical, great gas mileage, and a reputation for quality. I purchased my 2006 Civic in October 2005. I drive a lot of highway miles to work and back and had been most happy with my car until last week when it overheated for the first time. I immediately got to my local mechanic and hours after dropping it off, he called to tell me I had a cracked engine block. Honda is willing to pick up 75% of the cost, leaving me with a $821 bill. They have published a service bulletin for shops --> http://www.alldata.com/tsb/Honda/1250838000000_1251183600000_08-044/8441.html as this problem is well known. Since I got one of the first of their new model, I'd imagine there are a lot more coming as the service bulletin lists 2006-2008. It's a shame they're not picking up all the cost as I could have gotten a Hyundai for thousands less where this kind of DEFECT would have been covered.

So i am minding my own business driving to clients as usual. i pull into a parking lot and get out of the car to go inside. next thing i know i look at my car and it seems as if i have driven through a giant puddle. however, it hasn't rained in several days and find it a little odd. anyways, i don't think anything of it until i get out of the clients office, turn on the car and notice a little smoke coming from the engine. not a lot, but enough to know its my car making that smoke and making that sweet smell of antifreeze burning against metal. i imediately took it to midas where my friend works because i figured it was the thermostat/radiator/hose or something from the cooling system leaking. When he told me the block was cracked i nearly had a seisure. thank god i found this site, i have to call honda today to see if they will fix the issue.

Same problem here, antifreeze leaked out of my 2006 Honda Civic Engine Block, took it to Honda and they replaced the engine block. The cost to me was approximately 10%, Honda paid 90%. Honda is aware of these engines cracking, they'll replace them upon request. Seems there's been a bunch of these complaints.

Same story here as all the others concerning Honda's cracked engine block. There are so many of these cars with same problem it's pretty damn obvious to me, an auto mechanic, that this problem is a manufacturing defect, a production flaw that started in the Engineering department and found it's way into manufacturing and ultimately to the consumer. We shouldn't have to pay for this. It's not right. It's not like something wore out. Piston rings and engine bearings wear out. And don't let some "case manager" from Honda BS you and tell you that your car wasn't properly maintained and therefore Honda assumes little liability. A cracked block is totally unheard of !
Honda needs to pay for this, not us. I am really pissed and I'm not going to take it, but we need to stand together. There is strength in our numbers. There are so many of us ! What if this were a defect in a safety related item ?? Honda would most certainly have a recall and straighten it out. Why ? Because of liability. They don't want to be sued. But it's not a safety issue, so Honda doesn't care. Honda DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR LOYAL CUSTOMERS. How does that make you feel ? Does that truth make you feel good ? And now what do we do with our defective cars ? Sell them to someone else ? Screw someone else like Honda has screwed us ? I can't do it.
Are there any lawyers out there that want to start a Class action lawsuit against Honda. Who is with me ? who else wants to stand up and fight this corporation ? I bought a Honda because of their reputation and their resale value, but after this BAD experience, I will NEVER buy a Honda again. F*ck you Honda !

On November 1 2009 I drove my Honda Civic (which was purchased used about a year and a half ago) home from work without any problem. Later that evening my boyfriend came home and asked if the car had overheated on my way home. I told him no and thought it was a weird question since we have never had any problem with the car. He told me antifreeze was all over the driveway. We figured the car needed a new water pump since it has just over 93,000 miles on it. We had the mechanic look at it and he was shocked to discover we had a cracked engine block. He told us he had never experienced anything like that in such a new vehicle so he looked up the problem in the computer and found the service bulletin and an overwhelming number of people who have had the same problem. We were shocked that our Hondas engine was virtually no good and a car that I still owe $13,000 on was inoperable. I contacted Honda corporate to see if they would help with the cost only to find out that they were aware of the problem but that because I was out of warranty there was nothing they could do to help me.
We have to do something about this it isn't fair and Honda needs to pay for this mistake! We can't give up!

I was leaving work and my car was shaking and almost bucking when I was at rest. When I stepped on the gas it barely went, I could only go about 12-15 mph. I barely made it home. It had to be pushed up the driveway. I had it towed to the dealership where I purchased it. They called the next day and said the engine block is cracked. They are ordering a new engine. I only have about 23,000miles! I purchased a honda for the reliability...after this, I am having serious second thoughts.

Ok, so the other day I get in my lovely well maintained 3yr. old Honda Civic and begin my daily 40 minute commute to work. I stop a red light and begin to detect an odd sweet yet disturbingly "hot" smell....I glance around snobbishly at the other cars stopped at the light and think to myself..."wow, some poor sap has some real problem with their car!" I glance down at my instrument panel..., no problems here and continue on my way. I arrive at work and get out of my car and again notice that weird smell, "huh! that's funny that smell must have really worked it's way into my car" That poor guy really needs to get that fixed. Heading home after a long day...cruising....listening to tunes....instrument panel looks fine....WHAT!!!!....temperature gauge is maxed out!! Pull in my driveway, inform the hubby and he promptly puts a whole bottle of antifreeze into the EMPTY reservoir. Next day.....huge green puddle. Take it to Honda dealer. Phone call....Heeeyyy, it's Adam, got good news and bad news......your car has a cracked block!....good news Honda has agreed to pay 90% of the cost to repair and you just need to pay 10% which comes out to about $350. You have got to be kidding me! How did this happen? Are they having problems with this in 06 Civics. His reply, yes they are having problems which is why Honda has agreed to pay for MOST of the cost. I am dumbfounded, continue my rant, tell him what I think of Hondas and tell him to kick my car! I was told today my car is finished and I intend on going in there and refusing to pay the 10% for something that was a manufacturing defect and if the dealer refuses to eat that cost I intend to make a poster for my car that will read "Honda quality?, think again, www.carcomplaints.com, 06 Honda had a cracked block" They can either choose to take a $350 loss or risk my free advertising for the competition and stand to loose thousands, the choice will be theirs to make.

We noticed a puddle of coolant in the driveway and took it to our local mechanic who informed me that my 2006 Honda had a cracked block. The car never overheated or showed any problems of any kind prior to this except for the rear tires wearing out because of another factory defect on the rear suspension...that Honda would also not cover. I took it to the local Honda dealer who submitted my complaint : "Customer states engine block is cracked" Then called a week later stating they would replace the engine at a discounted rate of 25% off. NO WAY! When I told them that I was going to the better business bureau and was tempted to picket Honda - I was told in no uncertain terms that I was not welcome on their lot, they never heard of me, they never saw my car, and they have absolutely no knowledge of the problem - also they would be contacting their lawyers immediately. WOW, way to support your customers Honda!!!!!! I will never by another Honda and will discourage everyone I know from buying them-I find it a little ridiculous that I have to replace the engine before the spark plugs!!!!!

Cracked engine block.
I noticed something was unusual over the weekend when my heater did not work, which has never happened. Occasionally the heat would come in, faintly, and when it did, I smelled that sweet, maple syrup smell of coolant. (I did not know it was coolant at the time, however.) The following day, on a simple drive, my car overheated without warning. The temp gauge was maxed out and steam started rising from the passenger side of the hood.
An acquaintance believed the antifreeze was leaking and so we put in at least a gallon just to replenish it to a normal level. (At that point, the heater started working.) Since it was a Sunday, I called my nearby Honda dealer the next morning and was told to bring it the next day. After quoting me $97 for a diagnostic, several hours later the service guy called me with "good news and bad news."
I asked for the bad news first: "You have a cracked engine block," he said. My mind blurred because my warranty had just expired and I'm about a year away from having the car paid off.
The good news: I only have to pay $135 to replace it with a new block. (On top of the diagnostic fee and having to pay for a rental car at $33/day until its fixed, which will supposedly take a week or so.) He said Honda agreed to pay 95% of the whole repair and replacement because it's "aware" of the issue. Also, because I'm just over the warranty and got the "goodwill" consideration.
The guy also mentioned that he's "seen a few" other Civics with this problem at the dealer. In my own case, many of my miles are highway-driven and I've kept up on all scheduled maintenance and just a few months earlier purchased a new set of factory tires at the dealer.
Like most people, I got a Civic because of its reliability and am surprised that I've had to lose sleep over a car with less than 70,000 miles on it.
But was I relieved that the nice service man quoted me $135? YES. It could've been a LOT worse. So part of me wants to complain that I have to pay anything at all for this defect, and the other, pragmatic side is just thanking God that I'm not on the hook for $4,000, which is the cost the service guy said it would've normally been.
I feel badly for some of the other people on this board who totally got screwed.
Update from Apr 8, 2010: My repair only took three days and the total cost for the whole thing, including a rental car, ended up being $240. For a new engine block replacement, I'll take that and run!
