I have a 2012 Honda Civic 4door. Sometimes when I start it cold after sitting for many hours I get an awful grinding noise for about a minute. It only does this sometimes and normally after sitting for a bit. I came across similar complaints about the 2012 Honda CRV and many commentators said that it was the VTC Actuator, but other people claim that they contacted Honda and were told the issue is "under investigation" supposedly since 2007. A few people commented that for the CRV that they were told the replacement part was still being created. So, I'm not sure what to make of the mixed feedback and this is all for a CRV, but matches what my Civic has done.

I looked for TSBs on this website, but didn't see anything similar. Any suggestions on a course of action are appreciated. My car was bought new from the dealer and I'm about to be up on my warranty.

Not fixed by Honda yet. Since they will need my car for 2 days or more, suggested taking it in on Monday morning. I am just really disappointed that with Hondas long-time good rep, I have a pretty serious problem 9 months into owning a brand new car. Specifically, what it does (in case anyone else has these symptoms) is when car is turned on (cold out) and engine is running at about 1500 rpms, it 'surges,' i.e. makes a steady sound like someone is steadily pressing the accelerator and lifting off, only the needle isn't moving. Sound coming from the engine. Then when it's warmed up to about 900 rpms, then a high-pitched steady whine is heard. That continues even when car slows down to idling at its normal 750 rpms, just quieter so that you can't hear it unless you open the car door someplace quiet, like your garage, or open the hood. Has continued as long as 15 mins., the longest I've sat Nd listened. Honda says while there's no recall, because not a customer safety issue, there is already a Honda bulletin at corporate referencing reports of this problem for other Honda service depts to access. So when I take the car in, they'll be 'tearing down the engine' and either replacing the oil pump which they said usually fixes the problem; or depending on what they find, will be replacing the engine 'short block.' I understand no car is guaranteed, people and machines are assembling these things, but certainly makes you nervous re the money you invest in a new car just to be dealing with not a minor problem before a year has even passed. I had a Toyota corolla bought new in 1989 and never any problems. Gave it to a cousin at 285,000 miles. Bought a Honda this time around because good rep also and I liked the style better than Toyota corollas 2012. Will update when problem resolved.
