CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2014 and 2015 Honda Odyssey shows an early trend of transmission problems with clunking/jerking when shifting gears.

Most of these Odyssey transmissions are still under warranty, but so far Toyota generally hasn't been able to diagnose or fix the clunking problem — that's the reason for our low rating. Some owners have reported it was a stuck solenoid, & in a few cases Honda has replaced the entire transmission.

As more of these Odysseys start exceeding the 60,000-mile powertrain warranty limit, buyer beware.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

I BOUGHT A NEW 2015 HONDA FOR RELIABILITY. I USUALLY BOUGHT USED KIAS MINIVANS OR DODGE CARAVANS WHICH NEVER BROKE DOWN, BUT HAD SHAKY RELIABILITY RATINGS.

TO DATE, I HAVE HAD 4 BREAKDOWNS WITH THIS HONDA AND 3 TOWINGS. THE FIRST "FAIL SAFE STOP" OCCURRED IN A PARKING LOT AT ABOUT 30,000 MILES, BUT THE CAR SUDDENLY STARTED WORKING. I JUST THOUGHT I HAD INADVERTENTLY HIT THE IGNITION BUTTON.

THE SECOND OCCURRED IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN.THAT WAS AT ABOUT 50,000 MILES. THE HONDA DEALER COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. COMPUTER ANALYSIS SHOWED NOTHING. THE CAR WAS WORKING. THEY CALLED A MANUFACTURER REPRESENTATIVE AND THE EGR VALVE WAS REPLACED.

THE THIRD WAS ON A SUPER BUSY INTERSTATE WITHOUT MUCH OF A BERM. I WAS SO LUCKY THAT I WAS NOT HIT AND COULD LIMP OUT OF THE MIDDLE LANE WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT. TOWED TO DIFFERENT HONDA DEALER WHO SAID I JUST HAD A MOTH IN THE AIR FILTER. I THINK THE MOTH GOT IN WHEN I WAS WAITING FOR 3 HOURS NEAR A FIELD WHERE I BROKE DOWN.

THIS MOST RECENT TIME OCCURRED YESTERDAY. NOW AT 82K MILES. CAR WAS SERVICED 3 WEEKS AGO. I AM ON A BUSY 2 LANE RURAL HIGHWAY THAT IS THE MAJOR ROAD TO AN INTERSTATE. I FEEL THE SPUTTER AND KNOW THAT I NEED TO LOOK FOR A PLACE TO PULL OVER AS I AM LOSING POWER, STEERING, AND OPTIONS. FLASHERS GO ON AND I LAND ON A STEEP NARROW BANK THAT I HOPE HOLDS THIS CAR FROM TIPPING OVER. I CAN'T GET OUT OF THE CAR BECAUSE OF THE HEAVY TRAFFIC.

I WAS TOWED TO THE SAME DEALER WHO REPLACED THE EGR VALVE. THEY ARE GOING TO CALL ME ON MONDAY. I AM A LITTLE FEARFUL TO DRIVE THIS CAR AND REALLY DON'T WANT TO TRADE IN A VEHICLE THAT IS SO UNRELIABLE. A QUICK ONLINE QUESTION TO A HONDA MECHANIC THOUGHT IT WAS THE THROTTLE OR A BAD COMPUTER PART.

Odyssey Touring V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 5,500 miles

I was driving my family down the interstate @ 70 mph & the van lost all power. I had no power at all, therefore, I couldn't steer or drive. We were sitting ducks on the interstate as we were then rear ended by an 18 wheeler. The kids remember the DVD player going black before impact. All I remember before impact is the car rapidly decelerating, as if we hit a 200 mph headwind, pumping the gas pedal, manhandling the steering wheel to try to get the van off the interstate onto the shoulder, & screaming @ my wife at my as if she had something to do with the car losing power. By the grace of God, nobody was killed! We purchased the van in August 2015 with 80 miles on it.
