CarComplaints.com Notes: There's an emerging trend of transmission problem with the 2010 Elantra at fairly early mileage.

So far owners report having the transmission replaced under warranty but that won't hold up for much longer. It may be a bit premature but for now we're putting the "CLUNKER" rating on the 2010 Elantra just to be safe.

Speaking of being safe, you might not be unless Hyundai can figure out why their airbags aren't deploying.

It is an outrage that Hyundai does not respond to this issue and that NHTSA is letting them get away with it. There is a small plastic item which sells for about $6 on amazon which is failing on a huge number of Hyundai vehicles. I am referring to the steering coupler. It is causing a clicking when turning the steering wheel whether the vehicle is moving or not. If not addressed in a timely manner, apparently this can lead to steering failure. I believe Kia waived the 100,000 mile limitation on the replacement of this item, Hyundai refuses to do so. It is labor intensive, requiring the removal of the steering system and dealers charge hundreds of dollars to do the job. My local dealership's service department agreed that since this part's failure is so common, NHTSA ought to come in and force Hyundai to fix it in all their vehicles, even if they have over 100,000 miles on them.

My 2010 Hyundai Elantra's steering wheel started clicking. Shortly thereafter the eps light turns on. I was working and could not take it in. I made an appointment a few days later and on my way my car started locking while steering almost causing me to hit a parked car. My dealership told me nothing is covered. I have read numerous complaints about the same issue.

Eps light came on. Took it to dealer and was told sensor needed to be replaced at a total cost of $2500 approx (replace entire steering column). Car has only 113K. Now I have no power steering. There was a recall to update the eps control unit which my mechanic says is just a patch and not a real fix for the problem. There are numerous complaints about this problem on a lot of Hyundai vehicles. My power steering was working intermittently and is now completely off, my car was parked.

The eps light on the dashboard came on one day. I was worried about driving the car, so I went to a nearby mechanic first. He informed me there was an issue with my steering column and an open recall for my VIN. He encouraged me to go to a dealership and see if the recall was connected to the steering issue. I went directly to the dealership and had the recall performed. A few days later, the eps light came back on. Shortly after that, the airbag light also came on. I parked the car for fear of a possible incident. I was finally able to get the car back to the dealership. After initial diagnostics, I was informed the steering column needs to be replaced and the technician wants to start the airbag fix by replacing the sensor under the passenger seat. Each repair was over $2,000 with my grand total being just over $4,800 and no guarantee that it will be safe to drive at that point. I have read multiple other complaints about both of these issues and people with under 60,000 miles dealing with $2,000+ dollar repairs. If the steering goes out, it has caused accidents. That coupled with the airbag light, which notifies the whole airbag system has been disabled, makes this car totally unsafe to operate. Even out of their warranty periof now, these were reported issues that I was not made aware of when the car was purchased used in 2013. I contacted the corporate office and made my complaint. When I received a callback, I was told that because my car is over the mileage warranty and there were no open recalls, nothing could be done to help me. The $4,800+ repair bill is mine and mine alone.

Recently, the power steering failed while driving few times. It happened also while starting the car. The eps light went on and the steering column wouldn't budge. I turn the car off and back on again, the power steering worked until it fails on road! I looking online and saw recall # 127 along with thousands of complaints and accidents service manager said that there was a steering column 'software update' recall in 2015 done. I had no issue then. I got message yesterday saying it will cost me about $3,500 to have 'burnt out' steering column fix. The steering column is burn out because it fails. This is such a clear case of major malfunction, evidenced by your 2015 'software update' recall and the thousands of online complaints, accidents and highway safety involvement, that I am stunned and dismayed that Hyundai won't repair it. I am asking you to please consider having the entire steering column repaired at Hyundai expense. I rarely drive the car and when I do, I am so light on it. I simply cannot afford to purchase a car at this time and refuse to pay that kind of money to repair that, which is it the fault of the manufacture. Please consider my request. The eps light is on at 135,000 miles. The steering makes a clicking noise every time you move the wheel. Havent gotten in contact with Hyundai as of today, but will be writing to them to see if there is anything that they are willing to do before something happens and the steering freezes, as that sounds like the case with other folks

My steering wheels feels like it locked. It's really difficult to turn the steering wheel. It feels firm in place unless I turn it really hard with force and it's moves the vehicle slightly to the direction I turn too. It's usually happens randomly so I can't predict when it will lock in place. There's been a couple of times where I'm parked and getting ready to leave and as I head out of my parking spots I get stuck because the steering wheel. When this happens in red letters "eps" show up on my dashboard. This also happened when I'm driving normally in the freeway. When sign eps shows up and I have to park my car on the side with emergency lights on and completely turn off my car in order to drive normally and for the eps light to turn off on the dashboard. When turning on city streets, my steering wheel also locks itself in place at random times. The turns are usually wide and awkward because I can't move the steering wheel when eps is on the dashboard. Hence why I turn on my emergency lights then this occasion happens. I've had this problem since I bought this car at carmax in the year of 2015 but it's been happening frequently this year.

Started the car on June 24, 2019 with the intention to go to work. The eps warning light came on. The light did not go out as usual. Attempted to turn the steering wheel. The wheels were very hard to turn. Because the wheel would not turn enough to change the direction of the car. It was deem undriveable and unsafe. The car was at home. The car had to be tow to the hyrndai dealership on July 2. 2019 and as of July 14, the car is still at the dealership being repaired.

As I was exiting the highway onto a sharp curved off ramp, unexpectedly the steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn without warning. This unexpected loss of my power steering almost put me into the roads guard railwhile navigating the off ramp. I was able to regain control and safely pull to the side of the road. I noticed the 'eps' light was on. I shut of my vehicle and tried to trouble shoot it, which I was unable to do. I restarted the vehicle and the light went off and my sterring returned to normal power steering mode. The second time this happened my wife was driving the vehicle to the dealership so they could troubleshoot the eps issue, again the vehicle lost power steering with the eps light turning on. The vehicle is being taken to Hyundai of slidell for diagnostic testing. The dealer also stated that the VIN was excluded from a recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 15876848 the approximate failure mileage was 148,000.

Eps light is on. Recall #127 and #110 only updated eps software when if fact the steering column assembly needs replaced on over 300,000 cars recalled from 2008-2010. My car was taken to dealer on 5/7/2019 and eps software updated only!!!! case no. 15684240. Manufacturer needs to do another recall for safety reasons and safe lives!!! peoples power steering is being lost. Please read all complaints on the internet and contact corporate at Hyundai. Car has 97,000 miles on it. Eps software updated on 5/7/2015 with 79,000 miles. Hyundai should be responsible for repairing all steering column assembly, not the consumer at over $2,400. Before I purchased this car, I checked VIN and no open recalls. I would not have bought this car if I knew over 300,000 vehicles were involved and Hyundai would not fix!!! this is a safety issue for everyone involved.
