On 1/10/2018 I was driving my 2014 Hyundai Elantra in the morning while on my way to work. The car, while on the highway, out of nowhere the steering wheel started to shake violently and next thing I know the wheel kept jerking to the left causing the Cars steering and Brakes to lock up and lose power/control. The car began to spin and sent the car sharply off to the left onto oncoming traffic and the Elantra came to a halt by hitting into another driver. Not to also mention that none of the air bags deployed. So far, as an owner of the Elantra all Hyundai has done was send out notices of extended warranties for the steering part and has not put it on recall. Also since the air bags didn't deploy it caused my chest to be forced into the steering wheel causing a lot of bruising and chest pain. There was also soreness from the seat belts because the seat belts cut into the driver's neck from being so tight.

The anti skid light kept coming on but not while it was raining. Was told no worries must have been stuck since off now. Finally at an oil change they put it on the machine to see what was wrong. The chip had burned out. Now mind you this was at about 9000 miles. Said couldn't replace chip without replacing whole steering column. How ridiculous is that? Ok got it done.

When I picked the car up I never left the parking lot. The steering was so loose I couldn't drive the car. They all said it was fine, and the previous column had been defective. So you let me drive around for that many miles with a defective steering column, is that what you just said to me? Oh no I didn't say that. They drove car and said they found nothing strange. Said all Elantras drive like that.

Well I tell you what I never would have bought a car that drove like that. Had 2 independent mechanics drive it, and they both said it was the worst steering they had ever driven. The car is now going to another dealer to see if they will fix it. After leaving there I will be going back to the Toyota dealer, and buying another Toyota. By the way Kia is connected with Hyundai so look out for them too!

Elantra LS

  • Automatic transmission
  • 3,000 miles

After I drove the car for a week or so I noticed the steering lends to the right and the left. It doesn't feel like it drives smoothly centered if that makes sense. I reported this to the Hyundai. The auto shop manager there said that I just have to get use to it? I wish I never got this car.
