Huge win for car owners! All TSBs to be made public. The Center for Auto Safety just made the NHTSA (US Government) make public the full text of all TSBs from now on. They are the same organization that has petitioned the NHTSA & filed lawsuits to protect car owners over exploding gas tanks & other major safety issues. Whenever you drive in your car, you are safer thanks in part to a lot of work over the years by this small but very effective consumer advocacy group.

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2011 Sonata has a seriously defective engine that seizes without warning. It was awarded the dubious honor of being the first CarTalk / CarComplaints Turd of the Week in late September 2015.

A class action lawsuit was filed in May 2015 against Hyundai that claims the 2.4L Sonata engine is defective. More info here.

At 73,000 miles my steering wheel is making a clicking noise when turning the wheel. Also if I go over a bump. I contact Hyundai and there was a recall but my car manufacturer date was 2 months past the recall. I think that is wrong after reading several other complaints regarding this same problem.

Steering column clicks loudly when the steering wheel moves left or right. It does not matter if the vehicle is moving or in park. The problem occurred about 100,000 miles. The vehicle is no longer under warranty, and I have noticed there are lots of other cars out there with the same problem. Also, when travelling at a high rate of speed and the brakes are applied the steering wheel shakes violently. No, it doesn't need an alignment.

My 2011 Sonata was repaired in Oct. 2010 due to recall 097 steering issues. I am having steering issues again such as loose steering and rattling noise in steering column every time car is in motion. October 6, 2015 dealership says I need a new steering column at the cost of $1220. Recall 097 states steering issues could result in property damage, injury and death.

Over a 2 day period, I noticed a gradually worsening clicking noise coming from the steering column while driving...when turning to the left and right. It happened at highway speeds and neighborhood speeds....anytime the steering column was in motion. The clicking noise also happened when the car was in idle and the steering wheel was moved in either direction. The steering wheel acted as if it was catching on something. Additionally, after driving over a bump in the road, the steering column would make a loud banging noise...as if the steering column was shaking internally. The steering felt loose. The dealership replaced a $1.99 flexible steering coupler + $223.89 labor. (not covered by warranty). They told me it was a very common problem, possibly caused by the high heat in Texas...and the replacement part is manufactured with improved material. I have retained the old coupler as evidence...it appears to be a cog shaped (plasic?) wheel with the cogs partially melted. The failure mileage was 19,842.

I notice some play and a knocking noise in the steering wheel, along with a knocking /rattling sounds in the steering column area when driving. This has gotten worse, a repair shop informed me that Hyundai had a recall on this issue. I checked for recalls with VIN and none were found.. from researching on line this seems to be more wide spread problem then Hyundai is leading to believe. And no one says how dangerous this may be, if lost of complete steering is possible

Car suddenly developed loud clicking noise when turning the steering wheel slightly or going over bumpy road. Steering also feels very loose; has a lot of play in it. I took the car to sterling mccall Hyundai dealership in houston, Texas this morning. Service department says it's part number 56315-2K000-fff that needs to be replaced however Hyundai has a long back order for that part, and they're unsure when they will receive it. I asked the service department if the car was ok to drive because I felt it was a dangerous issue. The service advisor said he checked with his manager and the car was perfectly safe to drive until the part came. In. so I'm driving the car but the steering doesn't feel right.

After driving over a bump in the road would the steering columun would make a banging noise. The steering felt loose and would make a clicking noise when turning to the left and right. I took it into the dealership and they told me it was a very common problem with that model and should be recalled. It was a 4 dollar part to fix the problem and 278 dollars in labor. The part that failed was part of the motor driven power steering.

Near the beginning of 2015 I noticed some play or looseness in the steering wheel when turning at slow speed such as parking. As time went on, I felt/heard a "cluncking" sound in the first inch of wheel turn at slow speeds and play in the wheel at cruise speeds. I did not think much of it until I checked safecar for complaints for my model car. Within the last two months the steering has gotten more "sloppy" and a loud thud or rattle is heard/felt somewhere lower in the steering column when I hit a rut in the road or drive on a bumpy road, railroad tracks, etc. Everything about this problem is exactly as described by other owners and the previous recall for models prior to 2011/2010. I am 58 years old, and never had this problem with any car I owned. I am particular concerned that Hyundai already had a recall for this problem, and continued to use a defective system/parts in later models. I am also concerned that this occurred with only 16000 miles on my car. I do not feel safe driving with this problem. If it was a recall back in 2010, it should be a recall now. I am disappointed the NHTSA has not taken action.

Sonata

  • 55,700 miles
The vehicle developed a clicking noise around 53kmiiles under the dash when turning the wheel. It became a larger problem one day on the highway at 65 mph the wheel started shaking as if the wheels were about to fall off. The dealer found the rubber gasket that holds the steering column in place had disintegrated, they replaced the part and the issue was resolved. I feel this was a very dangerous safety issue and since I have found so many others online postings of the same issue that I am convinced that this should be a safety recall. This model has a much higher than average amount of recalls. This however was the most dangerous issue I have had with the sonara and I was very afraid when I had a hard time to suddenly not be able to easily control the steering.

Sonata

  • 52,000 miles
Shaking in steering... (thought it was ball joints - metal to metal)... told there was no problem with ball joints & no other issues determined (with their test drive). Local Hyundai service manager would not return repeated calls for complaint. Very disappointed now that "factory warranty & recall for steering problem" not worthy of repair at that time. Violently shaking now and Hyundai service department says it is not part of a steering recall (previously patched)... said it is a steering coupling (not the U joint which was part of the recall).
