My local dealer just told me after I called them that the Hyundai corporation had agreed to the the extended service policy for this and it's good for 7 years from the date of actual purchase to get it fixed. Today is 7 years and 5 days. They told me to contact Customer Affairs in California. I was then told that Dealers have to file a Goodwill Claim. I can't do this. Back to the Dealer I go. I won't be buying from Huffines Dealer again in McKinney if they don't make this right. No phone call for the reported faulty paint?

I spent 11k on the car and fixed the chipped paint on the roof for $400 only for the paint on the panels above the window to fall off completely which would cast 900 to repaint, and Hyundai refuses to cover the cost of the problem THEIR manufacturing caused...

I was shocked to see that my paint was peeling on my car it started out as a the size of a 50 cent piece, and now it has morphed into almost peeling across the hole front windshield from passenger side to driver side, all right to left. In other words, whenever I see a white car with peeling paint on the right hand side I know it's a Hyundai. Many of them that are peeling the dealership was going to have it fixed when I took my car the first time they said that they never paid them for another car so therefore my car sat there four days...

I had been a huge fan of Hyundai prior to this bad and faulty paint job on my 2017 Sonata. This makes the third Hyundai in the last 15 years. If the dealer does not resolve this paint problem on my 2017 Sonata, it will be the last Hyundai I will ever purchase. I had recommended buying a Hyundai to my friends and family members in the past. I will surely advise against buying a Hyundai to everyone in my future if my vehicle is not made right. The paint defect lawsuit should be recalled and get Hyundai USA to pay their customers for these faulty and defective paint jobs on all affected Hyundais. How do we restart the lawsuit to resolve this situation? Can anyone out there help us restart the lawsuit vs Hyundai? Please help.

I thought it was a shadow, until the shadow became large a huge chunk of paint that came off the roof and the truck. Various sections are coming off. This issue has reduced the value of my car significantly. I have low mileage and good maintenance of this vehicle.

paint peeling

The paint peeling off roof of car. The paint is a pearl white. I just discovered that Hyundai has been having this problem for several years and limits their paint warranty to 3 years 36,000 miles. I found avg. fail of paint to be around 50,000. Extended car warranty doesn't cover (selling point bumper to bumper coverage, we fix it if it goes wrong up to 100,000 miles).

I bought the car 8 months ago with 31,000 miles, now it has 39,856 miles. The dealer should have known about this issue and disclosed or now be willing to fix.

The other than this issue I've really enjoyed this vehicle, an average 34 mpg, comfortable ride, but it will probably be the last Hyundai I purchase; it will be if Hyundai doesn't make this good.

Update from Mar 14, 2022: The manufacturer agreed to fixing the paint issue. They had the hood, roof, trunk, and rear quarter panels repainted at no cost to me. The dealership gave me a loaner while this work was being done. I am well pleased with the way Hyundai handled my complaint.

The original issue began right after I purchased the vehicle. Paint began to chip in 2018. I took it to the dealership and the repainted the vehicle. The issue began again in November of 2019 on another part of the vehicle. I called and they would not repaint it because I wasn't within the warranty period. This is an ongoing issue with the paint.

I took it to a paint specialist where they mentioned that the paint is not holding onto the primer underneath. He also mentioned that this will continue to happen in different areas of the car. I tried reaching out to the dealership, Hyundai Headquarters and even the BBB and I am not getting any assistance with this. I have purchased this vehicle to last me a good 6+ years but I cannot be driving around with a rusted slightly new vehicle due to paint chipping off. The car has not rusted yet but that is what I am trying to avoid.

I've been a faithful Hyundai customer for 15 years. I bought this 2017 Sonata Sport on July 17, 2020. It was a beautiful white car. This was the first white car I had ever purchased. It was my 3 straight Hyundai purchase. I love the car but, after 4 weeks, the paint started peeling off the roof after a car wash. Not knowing of the previous problems, I took it to a local body shop. I received an estimate that I would pay for. But, after they started sanding the whole roof peeled off. Hyundai has blamed me for taking it to a local shop, I only wish that all of their customers were like me. BUYERS BEWARE! Hyundai is a great car but, the warranty is a JOKE!!!

Started in June 2021 with a .25" long chip on hood. Began bubbling paint around it. (Has grown to 3'). Went to Hyundai to check warranty or recalled on paint. They said 3 yrs warranty (too late) and no recall.

I went to a body shop yesterday and ask about the now 3 holes in hood and a 10" peel above window shield. Ugh... Shop owner said he could see E-coat under peeled paint so he said primer let loose. Metal was not scuffed enough to have primer hold. They said it was a known issue w/ White pearl Sonata's on hood and roof.

The car is 4 years old. Going to check with Hyundai dealer today. I'll let you know...

My car is barely 4 years old. There is only 17500 miles on it. The warranty for paint is only 3 years. I just retired and can't afford to have my car repainted but this problem will seriously compromise the durability of my car. This has to be fixed or it will rust. I love my car but this is unacceptable. I have owned 3 Hyundai's over the past 25 years but don't think there will be a 4th if this issue isn't fixed.

Purchased my Hyundai Sonata 1 yr ago. Noticed a few months ago that I had a couple of minor chips in the paint where the roof meets the windshield. Last week the paint on the roof looked like it was starting to bubble. Now the paint is peeling off in big swatches all the way to the primer/frame!! I contacted body repair, only to be informed that this is a WIDE SPREAD problem that Hyundai is aware of and it is faulty manufacturing!! I was advised that too repair the roof paint it would be $2,000 !!! Are you kidding me??

Advised to contact Hyundai as they should pay for the repair. I contacted Hyundai customer service and was advised the paint was only covered for 36,000 ! Are you F-ING kidding me??? Advised me to contact a local dealer. I then researched to see if other people have had this problem and the internet is full of "peeling paint" issues from Hyundai! I'm LIVID!

There was a class action lawsuit that was dismissed for some reason, and never refiled (even though the judge encouraged plaintiffs to refile the lawsuit). I say we get legal representation and file a new class action lawsuit against Hyundai. Had I known of this issue, or of the "exploding sunroof" issues I would NEVER have bought this car- or any car from Hyundai! Best warranty in the business? GIVE ME A BREAK !!!! And I purchased an extended warranty !! For what??

paint peeling

I can see after a little research that this has been a problem with Hyundai cars. This is the second new Hyundai I have purchased. The first was a 2004 Elantra that I put 214,000 miles on with only general maintenance. That lead me to stick with Hyundai for my new purchase. This just happened yesterday on the hi-way coming home from work. As long as Hyundai covers it under warranty I will still be very pleased with their products. We'll see?

Update from Jan 21, 2019: I took the car to the Hyundai dealership and they repainted the problem area. They did a great job and also took care of 2 recall issues while i was there. All done at no cost to me. Very satisfied.
