The power valve screw problem affects the 3.5 liter Infiniti & Pathfinder engines from 2001 to 2004. Nissan chose not to do any kind of recall or voluntary recall as they did with the 2004 Sentra and Altima engines where they had the same problem. It affected at least 80,000 vehicles. The Nissan Owner letter outlining the problem is numbered P5202.

Nissan has completely ignored the fact that this design flaw has affected no telling how many vehicles. There are something like 12 screws INSIDE the engine and over time they become loose and start to rattle around inside the engine. Ultimately they fall in to a cylinder during the combustion cycle. That tears up the cylinder and cylinder wall and if you're lucky it is ejected out through the exhaust. If you're not lucky you get X screws stuck somewhere in the engine = engine replacement. Infiniti quotes $10,000 for a used/rebuilt engine and $15,000 for a new factory crate engine. A local Nissan dealer is quoting me $4,700 for a used/replacement engine plus labor. I don't think I should have to pay for Nissan's poor design or quality control.
