CarComplaints.com Notes: Whenever a new product is introduced, there's bound to be some problems. And man oh man, does the 2006 Commander have some problems.

It's the plight of the 1st-generation adopter: you get the newest and shiniest in exchange for a handful of issues that get ironed out in future versions. But what happens when that handful of issues becomes a bucketload? The 2006 Commander has quality control issues like the door handles breaking off and the sunroof leaking. But what's truly worrisome is the electrical problems like the vehicle shutting down unexpectedly, gauges going crazy or the cruise control having a mind of its own.

Bottom line: if you want a Jeep Commander, you're better off looking at a later model year.

I own a 2006 Jeep Commander. We love this vehicle. However 2 of our inside door handles have broken. The driver's door handle and back seat left door handle.. in seeing all of the posts regarding this same problem with other Jeep Commander owners it looks like this is a consistent problem. It is absolutely a safety issue for my children, myself and anyone inside the car. My son switched the child safety lock on the backseat (left side) door as well and now because the door handle is broken we are unable to switch it back. Therefore, the only way that passenger can get out of the car is if someone opens the door from the outside. Door latches/handles breaking is an enormous safety problem and viable reason for a recall. We are requesting an investigation into this matter for consideration of a recall.

2006 Jeep Commander limited purchased brand new Dec 2006 from mccune Chrysler and Jeep, national city California. Purchased extended service contract max 6/70, covering my car to 70,000. Car currently has 63,000 miles (extended service contract). Never had an problems with my vehicle at all. Took car to purchasing location for repairs Jan 2011. While there, service advisor said I needed a new exhaust manifold and it was covered under service contract. Since then, my car has cut off in traffic causing me to almost loose my life by being hit by traffic, all lights on my dash panel lights up like a christmas tree, car will not accelerate when gas pedal pushed, ,, and I am told that my car has a communication problem and they can not figure out what's wrong with it. I finally call ed Chrysler customer, filed a complaint, and was told that a case manger will be calling me to work with me and the dealership. If the mechanics can not figure it out, then that is a major concern to me because now my life, my kids lives, and any other passengers lives are at jeopardy while in this vehicle. It's a death trap. Chrysler nor the mccune are taking responsibility. All I am getting is that it's a communication problem within the car. Can someone please help me with this matter? the car was returned to me after 3 days being towed to the dealer and being told it was fixed. The car went back to the shop after two days of having it where it is at this time.

Our 06 Jeep Commander has been a nightmare since the day we purchased it used with 14K miles on it in 3/07. We continue to have problems with the dash lights coming on, stalling just today 7/22- the lights lit up and the air conditioner quit working!!! no fan no blower... nothing. It has been brought in for the recall for this but it keeps happening. Oh and did I mention that autopark Jeep in cary, nc sold me a lemon/buyback.... they gave me the carfax report after 30 visits to the service dept.... fool me once, fool me twice... I am hoping that Jeep will buy it back again for this complete lemon!! I know have 37K on it and the service dept was talking that they did not know if Jeep would cover the work.... they can keep it..
