problem #21

Grand Cherokee 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 90,000 miles

The evaporator leakes into the passenger compartment when the ac works, have been told that the accumulator is bad so it will not hold a charge. The speedometer will work sporadically, sometimes it works fine, other times it doesn't work at all, and the sometimes it bounces around, though the speed control still works even when speedometer does not. The speed sensor has been replaced and that has not made any difference. The clock on the radio as well as other display items will sometimes light up and other times not, like the wires are coming loose or something. The rear axle housing is bent even though it hasn't pulled anything heavy and has only been driven on paved roads for the 3 years before. Engine leaks oil from the intake manifold gasket and other areas. Have had to have the input and output seals replaced on the transmission twice.

My 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4X4 keeps stalling all the time. Rough idle when started and check engine light comes on all the time. Also, alarm is defective and flashes the exterior lights and honks the horn anytime any of the doors are opened or closed and the power lock button is pushed to lock or unlock. The engine temperature gauge doesn't even show a reading and the factory infinity gold cd radio turns on but no sound. My Jeep has a warranty on it right now and these problems have been ongoing since 2/25/06. I've had my Jeep to the original dealer where I got it, which has ase certified techs, and also to two authorized Jeep dealerships with no resolution to any of these problems and to date have been charged over $450 between the three dealerships. I have sent now two E-mails to the Chrysler group customer assistance center and the first E-mail I received back brought up two recalls: #747 disc brake rotors #B02 floor shifter secondary system and the second E-mail I got back from Chrysler still had no information about the stalling and/or rough idle. This is entirely unacceptable as I have not been able to use the vehicle for quite some time now because of danger to me or others if it would stall while driving, the financial drain and the sheer unreliability. I would like a resolution to this as soon as possible.

Exhaust manifold cracked at the weld seam where the two exhaust ducts join into a single pipe and just before the elbow connect between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe, the manifold does not allow for the natural expansion and contraction of the metal, the new models have a redesigned manifold reengineered not to crack from natural thermal stress. All differential bearings replaced due to growling sound. Motor mount replaced.

Engine mounts have prematurely worn which has caused severe vibration in front end of vehicle. Consumer took vehicle to dealer for recall and also informed dealer of a loud clunk sound when transmission shifts into different gears and of a fluid leak around the transmission, dealer stated transfer case seals needed replaced and main crank seal needed replaced, tech also informed consumer that the engine mounts were torn loose, consumer seemed concerned because vehicle had never been taken off road.

When vehicle went in for routine maintenance, dealer stated 3 engine mounts and the tranmission mounts had failed and needed replacement. One engine mount had been replaced previously on 8/5/97. It appears that these parts failed due to a manufacturing or design defect. This is not an item that should fail on a vehicle that is just over five years old and has not been driven off-road. When the dealer was questioned, I was told that the part is poorly designed and tends to go out about this time. The manufacturer refused to replace the parts. This is a major rip-off on a part that is failing prematurely because of manufacturing flaws.
