Courtesy copy of pgk sent to ditlow/CFAS Jeep Grand Cherokee defect petition 09-005 (dp-09-005) file update and inquiring if Chrysler group declared the bankruptcy order void note: Document given to randy for further review. 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The person that examined the vehicle, believed the fire was a direct result of a defective rear-mounted unprotected zj body fuel tank system. The individuals in the vehicle were involved in an accident, which they would have survived, if it weren't for the design of the fuel tank.

The contact owns a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact observed a fuel leak after the vehicle was parked for a short period of time. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on three separate occasions for diagnostic testing. The technician recommended that the fuel tank not be consumed to the full capacity and that the fuel leak was not hazardous. The fuel tank periodically leaked without being filled to the full capacity level. The failure mileage was 1,880. The current mileage was 80,000. Updated 04/20/2010. Updated 09/22/10

Dealer tells me that the unit was replaced in 2002, yet today the replaced part is failing just like the original and the dealer expects me to pay for it even though this part was supposed to be the fix for the original recall..

The consumer located four recall notifications on his 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited.** answer required***. the dealer indicated that only one recall applied to the consumer's vehicle and made the necessary repairs. The consumer believes that the fuel system sending unit recall should also apply since his vehicle exhibits symptoms of that recall (recall# 97V194000).

Consumer complained about fuel gauge and fuel tank problems. Fuel gauge indicated that tank was full, when in reality it had no gas. Also, there was recall 97V194000 concerning fuel tank. Manufacturer was contacted, and stated that there was no recall, and there was nothing they could do about it.

Was driving on highway at 60 mph when vehicle cut out. Fuel guage read 1/4 tank, but vehicle would not restart. Vehicle was towed to dealer who said the fuel sending unit was bad. Although there was a recall for this type of failure, dealer said vehicles made in 8/96 were not covered under recall. Called Chrysler, but they would not pay for repairs.
