I was driving home from the gym, and while I was sitting at the light to turn the truck sputtered. Upon accelerating through the light the truck stalls out and restarts itself. This happens on a daily basis.

99 Jeep Grand Cherokee with engine problems customer states that the RPM's would immediately go up to the 200 or sometimes higher as soon as he starts up the car and also accelerate when the brakes are applied* the consumer stated various parts were replaced, however the problem returned. The consumers wife was driving, when all of a sudden the vehicle started to accelerate on its own, she applied the brakes as hard as she could, however the vehicle continued to proceed in a forward motion. The only solution was to place the vehicle into park. After placing the vehicle in park, the consumers wife placed it in drive again and immediately it started to accelerate uncontrollably. Applying the brakes with full force did not solve the problem. When aaa arrived and started the vehicle, nothing happened. The sudden acceleration happened again while the consumers daughter was driving. During one of the sudden acceleration incidents, the consumers wife was injured. The right front wheel speed sensor was replaced. The coolant radiator fan relay and water pump were replaced. The air bag light was on, the transmission seal was leaking. The fuel pump was replaced. The right and left hub bearing were replaced.

I was leaving the fire hall one morning and I put my foot on the brake and shifter my Jeep Grand Cherokee into drive and it accelerated forward. Thank god it was too far or it could have been ugly. It has done it several times since then.

There is a random feeling during acceleration and stand-still of which feels like a down-shifting beneath the SUV. I have had it looked at by several different dealers and they all just give me the 'run-around'. I think there is something workng and no one wants to fix it because it might prove costly.

Rotors have warped after about 7000 to 8000 miles resulting in lurching when trying to stop vehicle. Front rotors have been replaced twice and all rotors resurfaced 4 times by dealer, 3 times under warranty and 3 times at my expense. As rotors get bad, stopping distances increase and vehicle is difficult to control when stopping from highway speeds. Vehicle has only been driven in Florida, and has not been driven in salt water or off-road. First problem reported to dealer when vehicle was 8 months old and had 9294 miles on odometer. The problem recurred again, each time, approximately 7000 to 9000 miles following the last brake service.

I pulled out of a gas station onto a major busy street and accelerated the car and passed a major busy intersection. As I accelerated the vehicle, I heard a loud boom coming from the front of the car and was startled by the loud boom. As I passed the intersection I noticed that all of a sudden I have no control of the steering wheel whatsoever(it locked up). I tried to pull over to the right passing some parked vehicles on the street & there were a lot of vehicles behind me. I managed to move the car to the right, with my foot on the brake, without hitting a parked car in front of me. My front right tire of the car crashed into the curb and stopped. The car was parked at an angle not parallel to the curb and I was afraid that some other car might hit me from behind because of the way my car was stopped. I was shaken up a lot and when finally got out of the car I saw fluids leaking out from the front of my car onto the street. A couple of people came out of a business storefront and saw the fluids leaking out fast onto the street.one guy said that was oil leaking and could not see anything else. It was already dark (around 5 P.M. pst).I called my husband and both my husband & my brother came to the location to see what was wrong and both couldn't figure out why oil was leaking. The car could not start and a tow truck was called and towed the car to a Jeep dealer (where we normally have the car serviced) in alhambra.the following day the Jeep dealer's mechanics examined the vehicle and they said the whole engine was taken out and that apparently there's a hole at the bottom of the engine block. Three days later my cousin (also a mechanic) was able to look at the engine and said that the connecting rod inside the engine broke and thus made a hole on the side of the engine. We also have the car service at a Jeep dealer with oil change every 3,000 miles and do all the mfg recommendation. In Feb. '01 we had the car serviced for the 20,000 maintainence service.

Brakes vibrate at high speed and cause lurching at low speed. Rotors refaced twice and replaced once. Now problem has returned. After reviewing the NHTSA web site and finding numerous other complaints, it is obvious this is not an isolated incident but a recurring problem on this vehicle. It should be fixed!
