CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.

From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.

By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

Will never buy a Jeep again! Little problems over life of vehicle. Final straw is it sitting in my garage unable to get it to start. Towing to dealership, fixing it, and trading it in. Ruined me for life on Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge products! No reason for a vehicle with 58,000 miles to every give any one a problem. Ridiculous !!!!!!!! I HATE My Jeep.

Having to replace the TIPM in a car with only 53K miles that also shorted out the fuel pump and caused to ingition switch to also need replacing is ridiculous.

Jeep has had repeated problem with the TIPM and yet has not issued a recall.

This is shoddy business!

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee started out ocasionally not starting. Then got worse. After trying many things, found that if you press the start button twice without pressing on the brake the ignition is on. At this point, if the air conditioning is on, turn it off. Then press the brake and start button. Works every time for me only a pain. Then turn AC on.

I purchased the 2011 Jeep Laredo and in less than a month after purchasing the vehicle problems starting the car became an issue. The car takes a number of starting attempts before it actually starts. This is an inconvenience and very annoying especially considering this is considered a new purchase.

Repairs are extremely costly. The authorized dealer is charging $1700 just for the part. This does not include labor. Very disappointing that the manufacturers are not doing the responsible thing and recognizing this problem as an obvious defect which requires a massive recall or repair

Early October my vehicle started to have a issue with starting. So I just ignored it for a few weeks as time went on it got worse and worse. So on October 30th I did some research. found that it was a TIPM problem I was occurring. Mind you I am mechanically incline I do work for a car company and fix cars all day.

So on OCT 31st I took it to Suburban Chrysler In Troy MI. They did 2 recalls and said you Have a TIPM Issue. Ok Covered under warranty? NOPE! $1190.00 to fix. I state to the Service adviser Fred, there is a recall for the same issue. He states it dose not apply to your vehicle. I state I don't understand. But there is a fix can I have my vehicle repaired the same way. He states no. So I need to buy a whole TIPM where others just get a bypass? They state yes. F*** That. I remove my vehicle from there. I call Chrysler for any kind of support. Nothing. No assistance. No words of advice. I tell them, how do I drive my car if it stalls or wont start. Sorry Cant help you. Am I supposed to drive my car? They cant tell me if I can drive my car. That up to me they state. So there not sure if I should drive or not.

Over the weekend I contemplated about where to take my vehicle to get fixed. I guess 'Ill pay $1190 Monday goes by. I get home and sure enough a recall notice in my mail. You mean to tell me they did not know 3 days earlier? They just wanted me to pay $1190. so his Commission check is nice. I know how it works. Little did they know I was a service adviser for Chrysler for over a year!!!! Now its 11/21 and my vehicle did not start this morning due to the fuel pump running all night.... Now if the fuel pump burns out do they replace that under the recall? There is a trick. If it runs when the vehicle is off. Open the hood and slap the fuse box and it will turn off. Mind you it was 11degress here this morning. I froze for 20 minutes while it was trying to jump.

The sad part is I love my Jeep. I tell everyone how much I love my Jeep. Now I tell people how bad Chrysler and Jeep are to there Customers. At least GM put there customers in loaner cars when there lives are at risk.

I am now going to post this all over the internet. Where ever I can. Just to get the word out about how bad Chrysler and Jeep are.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee purchased from Somerset Jeep in Somerset, MA in June 2014 with 36.700 miles. Problems begin during the summer. My out of pocket cost for the 4 identifiable problems is approaching $1800 on a vehicle I pay a monthly loan of over $435! As a single Mom, who needs to work, this Jeep may cost me my job and my health.

This is the first issue:

Litany of Jeep issues:

1. 1st issue. Jeep was having trouble starting, off and on, during the summer. of 2014. I took it to Quirk Jeep in Marshfield, MA on September 5 because the starting problem was happening much more often. Issue, according to the service report, is ' fuel pump circuit does not power up in TIPM installed relay harness and fuse starts fine now.' That is what is listed on my receipt from Quirk. Cost is $375.68, which I had to put on my credit card.

I will continue to enter the other three problems on this site.

This issue I am just putting in the website now has been a true problem for a long time, it started with entering the vehicle within 6 months of me purchasing it trying to use the hands free technology. It was spotty at times not working properly, so much that I took the batteries out of the fob and had them tested, they were fine. Also whenever I got out of the vehicle sometimes it wouldn't recognize that the key had left the vehicle until I got back in it with the key in my pocket. So when I left the Jeep running with the key fob in my pocket it would not realize that I had done so, until I got back in and then it would beep when I entered the Jeep saying that the key had left the vehicle.

Over the past three months new issues have occurred. Imagine getting to your car and sometimes spending over 15 minutes to get it started. It has made me late for several appointments. I also believe that attempting to start the car so many times every morning was the cause of my alternator blowing, this happened last week on Friday 11/07/14. Thankfully I had purchased the extended warranty and only had to pay the $100 deductible but if I hadn't that repair is over $1000. Which is another story, when the Jeep battery died because the alternator gave out there was no warning anywhere about a low voltage issue. The worst part about this is it is now spreading.

Today 11/17/2014 my Jeep took 28 starts before it finally decided to work. My heating and cooling instrument panel is not working, this just stopped on Sunday 11/16/2014. Today in the rain 11/17/14 I pulled the fuse out praying that was the issue but the fuse was fine. So now I am here in the lovely New England cold weather with no way to keep myself warm or defrost my windshield .Also this morning 11/17/2014 my rear glass lift gate will not unlock either by key or by pushing button on gate.

Update from Nov 17, 2014: Oh yes, and my airbag display on the dash has been on for over 6 months.

The worst part about this is the absolute horrible service that Jeep and their dealership, Grava in Medford, has been giving me.

We bought a used loaded GC for Mama last month because we wanted roomier and reliable. We took a road trip this weekend when it took more than 1 try to start it. Sometimes it would start right up other times several tries. I found out the score online when we got home. Went the the dealer today and the service advisor was aware of the issue but not the pending recall. I didn't want to drop it off for them to look it over. Having seen the relay to bypass on the interweb i went to the parts dept to see if the had the part. Parts guy says no, and it showed a backorder for 3000 i assume national. Went down the street to Napa parts store. They cross ref the mopar part which was a mfgr only item. Mfgr had over 200 on hand. I'll have a relay by Friday. I'll see what happens then.

I was really disappointed with the jeep dealer didn't do what I did, seems they should have. My daughter has a older Laredo that's a great car. In 2000 i had a new wrangler that i kept 7 yrs. that also was a great car. Jeep had a different owner then. I will try to lead them down the do the right thing customer service path before I give up. I will end up with reliable even if it means not a jeep.

Before the repair I had noticed intermittent issues with the car not starting, windshield wipers going off randomly, my car alarm not turning off, and the engine stalling while driving it. Then one day I was driving to lunch when I noticed that my car had just stopped running. I was able to coast into a parking lot to get out of the way. The first time this had happened my kids and I were in the car when it stalled and I rolled out into oncoming traffic (the power brakes went out and I was on an incline waiting to turn). I was able to get it restarted but it was extremely scary at the time.

Since I had been having trouble getting my car to start and it was getting worse, I decided to take it in to get it fixed. They found that the fuel pump was staying on even when the car was off and was receiving the full voltage, which fried it. They replaced the fuel pump and cleaned out the tank for $1850 only to find out that the TIPM was the root cause of the pump failure. My mechanic replaced the TIPM for me at cost (for a total of $2100.00) because I couldn't afford their original quote. I contacted Jeep and they basically said you don't have a warranty so we won't help you. The car was repaired but it still doesn't run the same like it did before the TIPM was replaced and reprogrammed. I am not keeping this car.

Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,000 miles

Bought my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee used in May 2014- with approx. 34K miles on it- 2,000 miles/7 months or so left on the 36K/3 year warranty from Chrysler. My previous SUV was a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, which I really liked. I gave it to my daughter and purchased this newer model for myself.

Annoying problems since purchase were: the car wouldn't start on the first push button start, would take 2-3 tries to start. Didn't really consider that a problem, just a quirk; only happened about a dozen or so times since taking ownership. 2 weeks after I purchased the Jeep, one of the key fobs seemed to not work properly, the salesman who sold me the car replaced the battery in the key fob. Then about 3 weeks ago, in early October, the second fob seemed to be getting a dead battery also. I went back to the dealership & they replaced the battery in the second fob.

Now the focus of this complaint. On Oct. 27, 2014, when attempting to start the vehicle, with push button start, the car's engine would NOT turn over. At the same time, all the dashboard lights were on- all the little indicator lights were on and a phrase "NO BUS CK TIPM" or some such phrase was lit-up also on the menu screen where the indicator lights were on. (In hindsight, I wish I had taken a picture of it with my phone for reference). Plus the windshield wipers were moving and they were turned off at the switch. I tried several times to start the car, to no avail. Called AAA to come help- they thought maybe a weak/dead battery, but after checking the battery, they established that wasn't the problem. They towed the vehicle to my favorite mechanic (not a dealership, but a local, reputable shop I've used for years). He could not find the problem (and/or any information on dealing with it).

So I then had it towed a second time to the dealership (Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep) and left it with them. At this point, I let my husband take over the talking with the service dept. They allowed that it COULD be the TIPM module, it would cost approximately $980 for the part (plus labor- at $90/hour) and they would replace it but there was no guarantee that the problem would be fixed. If it wasn't the problem, they would then have to continue to figure out the problem by testing all the other modules (there are about 40) to find the problem.

Now this is a car I am currently paying a monthly loan payment on and now am expected to pay out AT LEAST $1200 to MAYBE fix the problem, and no guarantee that this will fix it. I am ready to cut my losses & pay out the $$ to fix the car, then sell it. AND NEVER buy a Chrysler/Jeep product again.

I took the car in because it wouldn't start and the garage reeked of gasoline that morning. I was told a part in the ignition had to be replaced, but they had no idea what caused the gasoline smell. The part was replaced and the fobs were also replaced. When I left the dealership, I had a warning about my right front blinker bulb needing replaced. I had that done at a local oil change place and the blinker still wouldn't work.

So...back to the dealership I went only to be told that the TIPM had to be replaced. Currently waiting on parts. It is so frustrating because after doing a little research, I know that they knew the TIPM needed replaced during my first visit and they said nothing.

For a "luxury" car with only 38,000 miles on it, this is unacceptable. I was fortunate in that I wasn't in a serious accident or stranded somewhere when the car decided it wouldn't start at all. After all of the problems that have been happening for YEARS on Jeeps, Dodges and Chryslers, the car manufacturer should have issued a recall and corrected their ongoing error.

Same as other complaints, I just wanted to post mine hopefully to get the attention of Chrysler so they know this is a significant problem. I purchased a used 2011 Limited Grand Cherokee in April of 2013. It had 42,000 miles on it at time of purchase. The truck was fantastic for about 16 months. There was an occasional second start needed, but I felt it was a fluke and nothing to be concerned about. That was until about 2 months ago when the non-start started happening more frequently around 57,000 miles. I dealt with it and eventually figured it was a battery, which I replaced a month ago for $200.

The problem continued so I looked into it further eventually finding this website. I cannot believe how many of us are in the same boat. This TIPM problem is such a joke it makes me sick. Since the problem began, I have been late to work, missed work, missed church, missed appointments, and family obligations. Does anyone think Jeep really cares? How can this be my family vehicle when I have no faith in it? To make things worse, my wife is expecting twins any minute. Will the vehicle start when we need it the most? I am beyond sick and hope Jeep does the right thing and quickly.

Grand Cherokee 3.6L 6 cyl

We bought our 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo new from a Jeep dealership. It has been our dream vehicle since we brought it home. We also have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee that was purchased brand new - still running strong. You could say we have been a Jeep family for over 17+ years now and have loved every minute of it....until now.

Our 2011 JGC started experiencing problems with starting about 2-3 weeks ago. It didn't seem much like an issue at the time, as it only failed to start once or maybe twice. Why should it really concern us if it would start quickly after? Since that time, if we would leave the vehicle sit for a longer period of time, when we would press the start button it would sit there and continually turn over but not actually start. We'd hit the stop button, wait a few moments - sometimes minutes - then try again to no avail. Sometimes we would even pull the push button assembly out of the dash and use the "old" fashioned key, though this would rarely work. Even the remote start seemed to help, though who wants to continually start their vehicle that way and risk ruining that?

This was really beginning to annoy us, so we'd made a plan to contact the local Jeep dealership this coming week to work out a time to have it looked at.

However, what made it more imperative was when my wife called me outside a couple of nights ago after we had returned home from driving the vehicle an hour earlier. To our utter amazement, we could plainly hear the hiss of the fuel pump running underneath the vehicle -- a full hour plus after we had turned it off and removed the keys!! Are you kidding? Scary. No matter it we turned the vehicle on or off, the fuel pump continued to run. We were afraid the issues that might cause, so we left it outside the garage overnight and proceeded to do some sleuthing online to see what the cause may be. After about 10-15 minutes of simple detective work, and multitudes of consumer reports later, we were angry. It appeared there were MANY complaints already registered on various sites (including this one) and major news agencies that were announcing these same troubles. All were suggesting a major recall was needed. The funny thing...it seemed very apparent that Chyrsler had known about the issue for quite some time and still hadn't issued the recall notice to consumers. Only just yesterday did I notice somewhere that mentioned a recall would be begin on Oct 24, 2014, but ONLY if Jeep designated your vehicle as part of the recall!

I called Chrysler right away and spoke with a gentleman who "wasn't aware" of the issues. He politely, but simply, stated that "if a recall were to occur, we would need to wait until then to receive any assistance." Until then, we could "take our vehicle in to a Jeep dealership and have a fix made", but that we would "be responsible for any costs." That began to make my blood boil, as some of the comments online were stating that this issue could cause serious accidents or injury, yet Chrysler wouldn't step up until they could "determine who would be covered."

Knowing waiting for an accident would be stupid (READ: Chrysler must ALSO be stupid if they are going to wait while possible accidents/injuries occur), we then called the dealership and brought it in the next morning.

When talking with the service advisor at Southtown Jeep/Chrysler in Indianola, IA, later that afternoon they mentioned they had some "problems starting our vehicle" and "needed to push it into the service area when they couldn't get it to start". There weren't able to diagnose it that same day, but informed me the next morning that they had determined the fuel pump was "staying on intermittently" (are you serious? didn't I just tell them that??) and that it would require a fix to the fuel pump.

They mentioned that since Chrysler hadn't yet recalled this issue, it would be out-of-pocket for us. He mentioned that the "fix" would include a few parts -- which would take 3-4 days to arrive -- and cost us roughly $400. If that didn't work, a new TIPM would likely cost us around $1200-1400. My guess? The "fix" will likely be to bypass the TIPM and wire a new relay to turn on/off the fuel pump. The parts cost maybe $50-60 total (a $58.00 - 4 way switch with relay Mopar #68142156AA, $0.76 fuse, an $12.00 fuse holder Mopar #68217670AA). And let me tell you, if that's the case, they are in for a world of customer dissatisfaction and ranting on Twitter/forums/news comments/etc.

The fact that Chrysler HASN'T diagnosed and recalled this issue BY NOW is completely and utterly bogus. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to determine that they are only looking out for the bottom line of their own company and are hoping to not get caught up in a legitimate vehicle recall.

Personally, if they intend to continue dancing around the issue, making us pay big $$$ for fixes and car rental fees, we will NOT continue being Jeep or Chrysler customers in the future, and will be sure to proselytize to others the reasons to stay away from Chrysler vehicles. Guaranteed.

If you are a 2011 Grand Cherokee owner (or another Chrysler/Jeep product that is experiencing the same issues), do not wait -- contact Chrysler immediately and inquire/demand about the recall. There IS power in numbers, folks.
