I have been driving with basically no driver's seat belt for almost a year. Called Jeep dealership and they told me there were no replacement seat belts available. Now I see one on Mopar website, but it's $433. Add labor and other parts and Ill be in it for close to $1000. Not to mention the fact if I'm in an accident, I doubt I'll walk away. Can't sell it like this, though I'd love to. Jeep needs to fix this extremely dangerous safety issue. I watched youtube videos on how to fix - every one says to take the seat belt out and wash it with Dawn dish soap - that the problem is caused by dirt over the years. I did that - didn't help at all. Jeep needs to issue a recall before people (like me) die.

It was not a cheap fix. $440.00 for just the seat belt, and that did not include the 7.065% sales tax plus labor.

seat beat will not retract seat beat will not retract seat beat will not retract

At first, seatbelt wouldn't retract occasionally. Within weeks, however, it won't retract at all without manually feeding the belt into the D-Ring an inch at a time. I removed the molding to inspect, thinking that it was an accumulation of dirt and grime - but behind the molding, the belt and the assembly were almost spotless.

Experimenting, if I pulled the belt "out" by grabbing it between the D-Ring and the spring take-up reel when I released it, it retracted smoothly and quickly. It didn't matter how far I pulled it away, it always retracted.

However, pulling the belt "out" from anywhere between the D-Ring and the seatbelt clip on the drivers seat, it would retract an inch or so and then stop.

I did notice the cracked D-Ring coating, but didn't think that could do anything. I tried to purchase a new D-Ring, just in case, and was told I couldn't get that by itself - I had to purchase the entire seatbelt assembly - $450.00, plus labor and tax.

As expected, the passenger side belt doesn't get as much use - and is still retracting as it should. However, I did notice that it, too, shows the same cracking on it's D-Ring coating. From reports I've seen online, it's likely that side will also stop retracting within a year or so.

To date, the belt doesn't feel all that different when I'm latched in. However, I do wonder if the inertial lock will work properly if the assembly can't "feel" the belt correctly forward of the D-Ring. In which case, it wouldn't function as a shoulder harness in the event of a forward collision.

The biggest annoyance is that even after 6 months, I'm still releasing the belt expecting it to retract. Which means the damned thing is hanging down the outside edge of the seat, and all too often in the door jam just waiting for the door to attempt to close. It's amazing how programmed you are to how a properly functioning seat belt functions.

This type of failure shouldn't happen, or if it does should be corrected. I've collected classic cars from the 60's, 70's and 80's, some with close to 200,000 miles on them. While they all had their age related mechanical issues, none of them had any issues with seat belts. For a 2014 model, less than 6 years old, to have this occur is very discouraging.

Update from Jan 16, 2022: Jeep/Chrysler issued a recall on this issue in 2021. They replaced the belt which was currently malfunctioning. I tried to get the to replace the other side as it was the same age, but no - :) not surprised but you don't know if you don't try.

I love this vehicle - it's one of my top 3 (out of 67 cars). Jeep has always come through when necessary, even it takes them a year or two.

Ok this should be recalled immediately!!! The seat belt guide (on the passengers front seat) cracks and breaks, pinching the seat belt, thus not allowing it to retract leaving significant slack in the seat belt rendering it useless in a crash situation. FCA might want to get on the recall fix ASAP before you get the $* sued out of you when someone dies because of this defect! I will post a picture soon.

Initially I thought it was the spring in the retracting device, then noticed a broken seat belt guide that was pinching the seat belt not allowing it to retract!

I'm worried about safety. It's very expensive to fix. There should be a recall. Seat belts are a big safety issue. Charging $500.00 to repair is crazy.

Front passenger-side seat belt stopped retracting. At first I thought maybe the seat beat was becoming stiff, but after inspection, the problem was the seat belt pillar loop. After finding this Website and realizing that I am not the only one with this problem I think that this is a major safety issue and I don't understand how there hasn't been a recall. Obviously, this is not something that should occur due to normal use and is a manufacturing defect.

seat beat will not retract seat beat will not retract

I have brought many jeeps. I worked for the company for over 30 years and they act like they can't do anything. After this problem with this jeep and other ones I have had, I don't think I will never buy another jeep. I have brought the box jeep, the grand cherokee limited, a grand cherokee overland and now a grand cherokee summit. So they will be loosing a good customer.

I have an old car, a 1985 buick, and never had a problem with the seat belt to date. They need to just repair the problem and find a better company to ship the better seat belt. What they don't understand is the law is to wear a seat belt, and if the seat belt is not securing the people that are using them, one day, somebody is going to get killed and they will have a bad lawsuit on their hand. They have enough money to fix this problem. I worked with them and help made a lot of money for them. We had the problem with seat belts when I worked for them. FIX THE PROBLEM, CHRYSLER.

I'm just beside myself with our Jeep purchase overall. So many problems from the use of cheap parts and poor engineering. The latest issue is the passenger seat belt not retracting. A cool $600 to fix it... "sigh".

Really disappointed in Jeep, not sure I would ever recommend nor buy one again.

The metal/plastic re-tractor on my driver seat belt cracked on it's own and no longer retracts. Basically I have to drive around with no seat belt. Came into the dealer and it's not covered by any type of warranty I assume it's going to take a death or serious injury to get a recall due to lawsuit.

Update from Nov 19, 2019: Update. Even with an extended warranty, Jeep refuses to fix anything restraint or emissions related. To replace my seatbelt it would cost me $300 for the part and $250 to install. I tried to order the part online but it's hasmat so i had issues. My final fix was to just take a dremel and shave the plastic down a little and then filed it smooth. Works great for now but I'm still upset they won't help me

Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6L V6

The front passenger seatbelt all of a sudden started to not retract. It came to a point where the passenger would strap in the belt and they would have enough room on their lap for an additional 2 people in order for belt to feel secure. When I finally got it to retract back in, I couldn't get it out again. In order for a passenger to sit comfortably while wearing the belt, they would have to recline the seat all the way back. I Reached out to 2 different Jeep dealers in my area and received a quote for about $540.00 before taxes. I was also told if my vehicle was under 60,000 miles, I could have gotten the work done for free. My luck right?!

It is ridiculous that I have to pay about $600 for something that is an apparent issue for a lot of other JEEP GC owners. There should be an open and active recall for this as it is a safety issue! To make matter worse, my driver seatbelt feels like it is also on its way out because it is slowing retracting after I take it off.

I love my JEEP, however, the company needs to get their act together and realize that this a serious issue that can and will result in serious injury or death due to a faulty seatbelt retractor that should be broken after 5 years!!!!!

Ready to head out on a road trip and the passenger seat belt locked! Had to pull off to side of road to help my sister get out of the seat belt, and then to help retract it. Purchased additional warranty and was advised this is not covered. Very serious safety issue as well as AGAINST THE LAW to drive without a seat belt!~ very dissatisfied with Jeep and their handling of this situation.

Grand Cherokee Limited 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,000 miles

Started with the passenger belt first, then a year later the driver's side experienced the same defect. Tested the retraction system and that still works fine, but the belt gets pinched in the shoulder point due to a crack in the plastic material and prevents it from retracting. Jeep said they would not cover it and would cost us $1000.00 for parts and labor. We kept people out of the passenger seat after that seat belt broke, but now we can't even drive the Jeep safely until we find $500 to get at least the driver's side fixed.

Never had this problem in any of the Toyota's I've owned and I've put close to 200,000 miles on each one. Seat belts should out live the car. When you have a common problem with a safety feature like this, the manufacturer should be all over getting it fixed to avoid lawsuits, but clearly Jeep cares more about money in their pockets then they do for customer safety. Will be looking into a class action lawsuit to turn this problem into a recall, as that should have happened a long time ago.
