We are seniors in our seventies who wanted a very safe and reliable vehicle for what may be our last new car. We make a lot of long trips to our second home and it is very tiring for us so driver assist was a big consideration in a new car.

Purchased car on 12-5-14 could not get anyone at the dealer to explain exactly how the FCW worked, the salesperson was a young girl new on the job and had little knowledge on any of the technology package (she got help from another guy but he seemed to want to avoid all of our questions as well). They demoed the car using the ACC which turned out wrong but convinced us that FCW worked like the other car we had it on. I had even tried to run into my own truck in the parking lot, not only with this car but also with another that we test drove, and didn’t get an alert. So I don’t think it is just our car that has this issue.

We went home and read all the manuals, (cd, you don’t even get a printed manual for nearly 50K) the brochures & went online, everything we could find was vague. We drove the car and tested it repeatedly and never got any kind of alerts, far or near, at about 1500 miles we got a false alert on a car making a right turn in front of us but not in our path, that was the only alert we ever got. We then also realized car also did not have lane departure alert.

I started emailing Chrysler support and requesting information and an explanation on how the function was supposed to work but was not getting much help or was sent back to the dealer who had no answers at all. I tried Chrysler again asking for a detailed engineering description on exactly how the feature worked. They finally, after about 2 months, sent me a spec sheet for the safety features on our car based on the Vin. number. This was about 10 weeks after we purchased the car and it said we had lane departure warning also.

I had canceled a previous appointment with the dealer because I had not received this info. So now I tried to get it into service but no one would answer the phone, call back nor answer emails so I called Chrysler support and they called the dealer who then called me. On 3-5-15 we dropped the car off with Brandon and explained the problem, I told he they could keep the car as long as it took to fix it right, he later called us and said that he and the mechanic had driven the car and yes there was a serious problem with the FCW and that it did not alert at all or until less than a car length. He said they were going to realign the sensors and I told him not to until they talked to Chrysler as the ACC uses the same sensors and it works great. He said they would need to keep the car a day or two, again I told him to keep it until it was fixed.

He called back later in the week to tell us that they had done a reset or re-flashed the computer and that it was working better but not perfect. I told him to keep the car until it was fixed.

On 3-19-15 the dealer called and tried to tell me it was working as designed and that Chrysler said there was no problem with the car at all since there were no error codes. I know for a fact that was not true and have heard this story to many times recently so I hung up on them. On 3-23-15 I decided I just as well pick the car up as I did not like it just sitting on a lot in the sun and possibly getting door dings when I’m paying insurance, and License on it, I take extremely good care of my stuff. We picked it up (no door dings) but it was filthy and there was grease all over the carpets on the driver’s side. The men that arranged the delivery of the car was rude, would not look at us, and the cashier told us that the shop foreman had wanted to talk to us but was off that day and would be calling us (he never did).

I drove it home and within a few blocks I got an alert and then one other but just an alert NO BRAKES. So since I was following my wife of 55 years in our truck we decided to do some testing. I could only get an alert if she was stopped, never got any brakes. At highway speeds I could run up to her fast when she was moving slow and not get an alert. I tried this with her coming at me also and did not get an alert. The conclusion is that they did something to the car as it does now do an alert in a stopped car situation but does not seem to engage the braking aspect nor work in any other possible collision situation. Plus there is no lane departure warning of any kind, apparently this has now been left out of the package.

My conclusion is that they have dumbed down the FCW to the point of being nearly useless by eliminating the areas that have caused problems for them. They are scamming customers by avoiding, using tricks, acting ignorant, or finally just saying that it is operating as it was designed.

The internet forums are littered with similar problems with the FCW system!
