2006 Jeep Liberty fuel overflow hazard. When refueling our 2006 Jeep Liberty, fuel overflows after fuel pump automatic shutoff is triggered. This overflow now occurs every time vehicle is refueled. No one is attempting to "top off" the fuel tank. The overflow causes a quantity of fuel, that I estimate at two to four cups, to spill on the side of the vehicle and onto the ground. This fuel overflow flaw creates an extreme fire hazard and environmental contamination risk. This flaw occurs in the Wrangler model of Chrysler Jeep products also, where a recall has been issued. The same flaw is occurring in many thousands of Jeep Liberty's as is evident by the huge volume of owner statements posted on many websites. Go Chrysler Jeep in englewood, co quoted a repair cost of $2031 to fix the problem. When the overflow flaw first occurred in my Jeep Liberty, it was an occasional problem that was impossible to predict and without a recall notice, consumers are unaware of this hazard. This flaw creates a safety hazard for the person refueling the vehicle and anyone nearby. The fuel spilled has caused property damage in the form of ruined clothing and shoes, and possibly damage to the vehicle as fuel runs down the side into crevices around the rear wheel and axle. This spilled fuel could reach the hot exhaust pipe and explode. Why would the manufacturer cover this flaw under warranty for one make and model, the Jeep Wrangler, and not cover the identical problem for another make and model, the Jeep Liberty? it's the same problem created by the same manufacturer.

Gas tank overflows every time when attempt to fill tank full. Dealer says problem can't be fixed and tank must be replaced. Not covered by warranty and cost is over $1500 to replace. This seems like a safety issue they should take care of.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Liberty 4X4. While contact stated that while refueling the vehicle, fuel spewed back out from the filler neck. The contact stated that the failure recurred constantly whenever the fuel tank was filled close to capacity. The contact inspected the vehicle and advised that the fuel tank would need to be replaced because the fuel check valve was defective. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics or repairs. The manufacturer was contacted and a complaint was filed. The approximate failure mileage was 21,000.

Every time I fill up with gas (regardless of station / how I hold nozzle / speed at which I refuel / etc), the tank overflows with a lot of gas all over the vehicle and the ground and sometimes on me. Then the interior of the vehicle stinks of fumes for a long time afterward. This has been going on for almost as I've had the vehicle but it getting worse over the past year.

2006 Jeep Liberty sport (3.7L gas), spills fuel at every fill up. The pump will click off, and about two seconds later, about a cup of fuel will spill out of the filler tube all over my hands, clothes, and vehicle. Jeep dealer said they've not heard of the problem, even though with 5 minutes of research online, it's very common. This has been a problem since I purchased it as a certified Jeep vehicle with 32, xxx miles.

The Jeep Liberty has regularly "spit" out quantities of gasoline while filling up at gas stations. The quantities range from 1 to 8 ounces, with the quantity that poured out today the largest amount yet. The quantities vary by how fast the pump is pumping and whether the pump is hand operated or on automatic but some quantity of gas comes out almost every time. The spill today left at least 4 to 6 ounces of gasoline on the ground which is both an environmental and safety hazard.

When fueling the tank the gasoline pump will not turn off when the tank gets full causing a significant amount of gasoline to spill down the side of the vehicle and onto the ground as well as splashing all over the handle and the person holding the handle. This happens every time the tank is filled regardless of weather or location.

For the last 2 months every time I fill up my Jeep Liberty 2006 gas spills out. This is frustrating especially with the price of gas. I estimate that I lose at least a gallon each time. When I first got the Jeep I noticed that you could not "top off" the gas which each fill. But now it just spills out all over. Help!!

Every time I fill up my vehicle at a gas station gas comes pouring out after the tank is full. The gas nozzle clicks off and gas begins to pour out all over the side of the vehicle and the ground. I have tried manually pumping as well as automatically pumping with the same results. I have attempted filling at multiple gas stations with the same outcome. This did not occur the first year that I owned my car, and only began in the past couple months. This is a hazard to the environment and a potential danger for a fire.

2006 Jeep Liberty made in May 06. This model is similar to the 07. Gas tank filling to full, gasoline shoots out the gas inlet with much back pressure. It has been doing this consistently for the last couple of months since I bought the car. It makes no difference what station I go to, or how fast the gasoline is flowing.
