Gas tank consistently overflows during cold weather. I was able to mitigate the problem by listening to the tank as it filled and could tell when the fuel was starting back up the standpipe. Still had many overflows over the last 3 years. I saw one of the other posts about an extended warranty on the fill pipe and overflow check valve so I called my local Jeep dealer. Short story: give the service department the last 8 digits of your VIN and they can tell you if your particular Jeep is covered under the lifetime warranty for this problem. Thanks for everyone's input it made my day.

Unfortunately, I have had this problem for a while now, and frankly its extremely annoying. I can't seem to find out what is causing it. I can't fill my tank normally in the winter as it will pour out and cause the fumes to enter my car even while driving. Its sad that this has not been recalled. I love my Jeep, but makes me not want to buy another anymore.

This problem just started I've owned the car since 2008, and never had this problem before. The gas comes gushing out after the car is done fueling. It is not related to a particular pump or gas type. Pretty dangerous issue, and has happened every time time I've gassed it up. I guesstimated how much gas the truck would take the last time and did not fill the tank completely.

I just purchased a very clean, used 2008 Jeep Liberty Limited. It Looks brand new! I had no complaints whatsoever UNTIL I went to put gas in the vehicle. Ti date I have filled the car 3X and every time I get a gas gusher coming out of the tank. The last time I was extra careful and still ended up getting gas all over the car and myself.

It has only happened once because I'm a lot more careful, but you shouldn't have to worry about fuel jetting out of the fill neck at you because it won't take more than 60 cents at a time on slow flow. I'm selling this thing as soon as I build a little credit.

It won't fill, it acts like the tank is full and there's nothing to be done but keep clicking. It looks like the filler neck is smaller than the hose leading to the car from the pump. Whoever designed this needs to hang themselves for being a failure of an engineer.

I bought the Jeep about 2 years ago and every time I fill up, it splashes out all over the left rear of the car and on the ground. The person working has to cover the spillage so it will not cause a fire hazard. I have to hold the nozzle in the tank fairly tight to try an stop the spillage but really never works gas gushes everywhere.

I feel a recall should be in the works to fix this problem I COULD FIX THIS IF I HAD THE MONEY BUT THAT IS ANOTHER PROBLEM THAT IS NOT A RECALL FIX

THANKS

Every time I fill my Liberty up at the gas station, the nozzle shuts off and the gas "burps" back out of the tank all over the side of the Jeep and the ground causing an unsafe gas spill. This happens at all gas stations creating an unsafe situation.

I have had a problem with fuel overflow when filling up since I purchased my Jeep Liberty in Clearwater, FL 7/28/2008. This was a new car purchase from Dayton Andrews.

For years I thought it was me or the gas stations had changed their pumps in a way that the shut off didn't respond. So, I was happy when I received a letter from Chrysler about the problem and that I could take my vehicle and my wife's identical vehicle in to be inspected. I did this at Fuhrman Jeep in Lutz, FL and was told they saw no problem with my fuel tank or fill tube.

We now live in Eureka Springs, AR and the problem persists and is getting worse. Even if I slow the pump speed to as low as I can get it, the overflow occurs, often getting gasoline on our clothes and shoes.

There are examples on YouTube (of a Wrangler) of the degree to which the overflow gushes out. It is really horrible and dangerous and expensive to try and get gasoline out of shoe leather.

There is a Jeep dealer in Cassville, MO 65625 (18565 SOUTH HWY 37) about 17 miles from Eureka Springs, AR where we live. I want this problem fixed by Chrysler.

This has been a reoccurring problem since purchase. Always seems to be a problem filling at Costco. Attendant said it is typical of Jeeps!! Have had attendants try and they have had gas spill over also:(

Does happen at other gas pumps.

Really annoying as I travel and have to stop more frequently as I am not able to totally fill up and it doesn't get such good mileage.

Initially I thought it was my fault but then when i used different pumps it still happened (and i never try to top it off). It is more than a pain in the ass because I have to fill up more and if I try to get it full I waste money on gas that goes to the side of my car and the ground. I asked my Dad about this (he has a 2006 Jeep Liberty) and he told me he is having the same problem.

This problem has been ongoing for a long time. Each time I mention it to the dealer they say "well, that's odd, we've never heard of this problem". It's interesting to see I'm not the only one with this problem.

Update from Apr 28, 2013: Received a letter from Chrysler dated 3/14/13 advising the warranty on the fuel tank inlet check valve has been extended for the life of the car. Chrysler will fix the problem at no cost to the owner....woohoo!

Same as the others- if I allow the tank to fill completely to the point the pump shuts itself off - fuel comes spewing out. Now I just estimate when think I'm about a gallon from the top and stop the pump myself. I've been a Chrysler -Jeep guy for the last 30 years----C'mon Chrysler/Jeep....this shouldn't be an issue.

Jan 202011

Liberty Limited 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission

The beginning of this year added yet another problem to my ongoing list of problems with my '08 Jeep Liberty Limited Skyslider. This time it was the fuel tank. I was filling my fuel tank with gas (a normal enough event - nothing tricky) when fuel started spilling all over my car, shoes, and the pavement below. I grabbed the handle and stopped the gas, then checked to see if the "lock" on the gas pump was sticky, or if I had something blocking the entrance to the fuel tank. Nothing. So I let the attendant know there had been an overflow, and cleaned the side of my car and went on about my day. Two weeks later when I filled up again, the same thing happened. Different day, different pump. Hmmm. So I called the dealership and asked if this was a common problem. My service manager told me it could be one of two things, and faulty valve or fuel tank. he said I could bring it in and they could take a look at it. They had an extra fuel tank already in supply, but would have to order in the valve if that was the problem. We were set to fix the problem when I found out that the original dealer we purchased the vehicle from did not respond to a letter my extended warranty company had sent so my extended warranty was in a state of denial until it was resolved. Oh Jeep Dealership in Boulder, you just keep proving me right...

Fuel overflows over onto ground, car and owner when refueling. Pump shuts off and out spurts gas everywhere. Started happening about 3 month ago every once in a while. Not happening every fillup.
