this happened twice the first time i went to put the jeep in gear and the shifter just slid back and forth at that time it was still under warranty so i had it towed to the local jeep dealship. It was the shifting cable it just fell off. Apparently with the heat the teflon grommet breaks down ..well this wasnt covered under warranty. This lasted about 1 year when it happened again I just pushed it back on and then started looking on the web for similar problems. Came across many people who ran into the same problem. One person offer a good solution. Drill out the pin and replace it with a stainless steel 1/4 in dia bolt, washer and a lock nut . Took about 1hr to fix and less then 5 dollars in parts. Now I never will have to worry about that problem ever again.

Unable to start engine as the sensors could not detect the vehicle was either in "Park" or "Neutral." Had dealer replace shifter cable, now works fine.

Bought my Jeep Wrangler from my dealership...now, former dealership, new in 2005. Had problems with the wheel alignment from the beginning. Dealer continued to balance and rotate wheels. After warranty ran out, took it to a tire store. They informed me all 4 wheels were BENT. Took it to local Honda dealership, they put it on a lift and showed me my wobbly wheels! Thing looked like a horse wagon. Bought new wheel and it drove like new! NOW...two years ago, I parked in a parking lot and when I tried to leave, the shift lever just flopped back and forth. Called a wrecker. Dealer replaced the broken SHIFT CABLE. Over 300 bucks worth. Two weeks ago, was driving with my wife and it broke again, in drive. My same Jeep dealer fixed it...shift cable bushing this time, another hundred bucks. Called Chrysler?Jeep to ask about a recall. Nope, they hadn't heard of this problem. LOL Figures. Told me...very politely...my jeep is old, stuff breaks. I KNOW things will wear out. But, with less than 44,500, gentle miles on it, they shouldn't CONTINUE to give a problem. Why did they replace the old shifter rods with a cable with plastic ends anyway? In MY opinion, it's a very poor design. Even though Jeep hasn't 'heard' of anyone else having a problem, the internet has LOTS of sites describing my very same complaint. Now, every time I back down the boatramp, I PRAY that my Jeep won't lock in reverse!
