had this same noise with 2000 sportage. dealer said it was nothing.( was under warranty at that time-makes sense) with 2002, not under warranty; i decided to fix this annoying problem. overall- i ended up replacing the following components: all 3 belts, fan clutch assembly & mounting bracket, tensioner pulley (bearing at the front of engine). seems to have fixed issue. will see in next couple of days.
