I lost complete control of steering of my Lincoln while driving ( no steering whatsoever) and fortunately the direction of the car was heading toward the shoulder of the turnpike. And I got off the road onto shoulder. Scary!! this car was recalled twice for the steering shaft and was to have been repaired. Or was it!?? this could have been a major accident, with loss of steering!! Ford needs to stand behind this incident and cover the cost of repairs!! how many others with Lincoln towncars have crashed with loss of steering and never lived to tell their story!!

I am aware of the current recall regarding Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, and Lincoln towncar using the lower intermediate shaft corrosion as the issue. I am not convinced that this is the primary reason for possible loss of steering control. I lost control of the steering in my towncar a few weeks ago and had it towed to a dealer in new castle Delaware. The service writer offered no explanation other than the steering column shaft had broken. After a personal closer inspection I determined that the steering column shaft was pulled apart as a result excessive travel of the lower intermediate shaft. The reasoning offered by Ford blames only the issue of corrosion thus minimizing the parts for possible replacement. Fortunately, when I experienced the loss of steering in my car I was pulling into a parking space at low speed. Had I been out on the highway the results could have been much worse.

I was traveling West on 64 on 8\13\15. There was a considerable amount of traffic but I was experiencing no problems until my car begin to swerve back and forth and I was unable to maintain the lane. We realized that we must get the car off the road and into the median to avoid being struck or striking a car in the right lane. After much effort we were able to do so but hit the guard cables which resulted in totaling our Lincoln. In Aug of 2013 we received a recall for the rack and pinion steering for our car and had it repaired on 3\21\14. We had to wait for the dealer to get the parts. There was another recall on 11\5\14 saying that cars with the intermediate shaft repaired during the first recall may not have been done correctly. My question is why did we not receive that recall? I feel that we did everything we could to insure that the best of circumstances occurred in what was most certain going to result in a crash and prevented others from being injured. If we had had that recall we could have had ours checked and possibly have avoided this accident. Since the car was totaled the only way it could be checked was to start the car and try to turn the steering wheel. This was done but does not indicate to me that there was no problem wit the steering, as we were able with great effort (both of us trying together) to turn it as well but the steering could not be controlled.
