After a couple months of transmission/transfer clunking when shifting from drive to reverse, my 04 mountaineer just stopped moving at an intersection and went into ENGINE PROTECTION MODE. Turned out that the center shaft that went through the transfer had the splines stripped out. Luckily only the thing that needed replaced was the center shaft. But it still required a rebuild + parts and labor. If it was the shaft on the Transmission side it would have been alot more expensive. Overall very happy with my Mountaineer. Very capable and full of options. only problem I ever had with it.
