CarComplaints.com Notes: Here's a disturbing trend for the 2002 Nissan Altima: the engine starts burning oil like crazy, the catalytic converter goes bad, the head gasket blows and eventually the entire engine needs replacement. Sound familiar? Like a script from a horror film, these Altimas seem doomed to fail around 95k miles.

Altima SE 3.5L

I bought this 02 Altima brand new. Since I have had this car, I have had to replace the calipers, rotors, struts twice, two different sensors, upper and lower radiator hoses, belts twice.. This was all before I hit 98,000 miles...

PLEASE... I can't tell you how many batteries I have gone through. I have noticed many people were having trouble with burning oil and I am surprised I didn't have that problem, but at 98,000 I got rid of it and bought a Honda...

I have owned Nissan's for most of my life, but I doubt I will buy another one... Sorry Nissan, you have majorly dropped the ball...

Altima SE V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 70,000 miles

Leaks from both from front struts and rear shocks - required replacement with only 70,000 miles - this is ridiculous! I had this problem as well as the intake manifold gasket oil leak at the same time. Total bill for repairs - $1500.00!
