CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Nissan Altima has a trend of engine & transmission problems.

Excessive oil consumption is the main problem reported by owners. Nissan did a recall back in 2006 for oil consumption due to bad piston rings, but many owners report to us that the recall didn't fix the problem. The dealer only had to check the oil consumption rate. Typically 1 qt per 1,000 miles is "acceptable" per OEM standards ... that's a lot of oil!

The 2006 Altima also has a defect trend of CVT transmission failure showing up around the 100,000 mile mark.

It's an expensive repair at over $2,000 average repair cost. For more information see Nissan Altima CVT defect info on NissanProblems.com.

Beginning 2009 at roughly 40,000 mi the car began to rattle while accelerating, I took the car to the dealership and they determined that the catalytic converter had failed and it's mount to the engine had broken, it was replaced. Then at 81,300 mi I was driving 30mph when my engine light came one, I made an appointment and took the car to the dealership the next morning. I was told again the catalytic converter had gone and in turn taken out the ego sensor as well.

I have a 2006 Altima and there was a recall on oil consumption, the dealer said I needed a catalytic converter, then he said it wasn't under warranty, when I called Nissan hq they said I have up to 80,000 miles which I only have 53,000 on my car. The end result the catalytic converter caused my engine to seize and now I have no car and still have 10,000 dollars of car payments. The dealer is hillside Nissan in New Jersey.
