CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Nissan Altima has multiple problem trends including the CVT transmission, and now that this model is out of warranty, it earns our "Avoid Like The Plague" badge.

Owners complain about vibration and transmission failure related to the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), a whining noise from the power steering pump, and constant windshield problems that appear to be the result of poor design.

Be warned: the 2014 & 2015 Nissan Altima appears to share these same problems.

I complained about the steering vibrating when I push on the brake peddle at 55-70 MPH. I was told that there wasn't any problems with the Nissan nor any recalls. The brake pads were changed with recurring vibrations.

Altima SV 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 36,000 miles

Just recently, when I get up to highway speeds (65+ mph), I've been feeling significant (but not extreme) vibration in the steering wheel and in the car in general. It's manageable and the car still maintains a straight line if I hold the wheel loosely. The vibration seems to go away a little when on a curve and is most noticeable on smooth straight roads.

I haven't taken it to a shop yet but I have my hopes that it isn't the CVT's premature death. I was excited about the car when I bought it super cheap for ~$7k at 18k miles from a very generous friend of my father's but now I'm worried that this is foreshadowing of the notorious Nissan CVT problems. I just need this car to last me until the end of college, when I can get a good job and start working on getting a more reliable commuter car.

THERE IS A PROBLEM AND NISSAN KNOWS ABOUT IT AND SAID THEY ARE WORKING ON IT. THEY HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO FIX IT. THEY SHOULD TELL CUSTOMERS ABOUT PROBLEM BEFORE THEY SELL THE VEHICLE. I KEEP ASKING AND GET THE SAME ANSWER, WE ARE WORKING ON IT. WITH THE SMART ENGINEERS , THEY SHOULD HAVE A SOLUTION BY NOW. THIS IS NOT A NEW PROBLEM. THE VIBRATION IS IN THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE WHOLE CAR ACROSS MOST SPEEDS.
