Altima S 2.5L

I don't get the advertised mileage unless I drive, on the highway at about 55 mph. But, here in Montana all gasoline sold for 5 months out of the year is E15. In the winter, they sell non-ethanol gas but the nozzle is too large to fit into the gas tank filler point. So why is a car being sold in this country that can't use our typical E15 fuel. And it is E15 for all grades of gasoline too. I am worried that my engine is being destroyed by gasoline sellers, and would like to know if there is a way to remove the alcohol from the gasoline. What else can be done?

Supposed to get 28 city and 37 highway actually getting 19 mpg city and 30 highway. Dealership says driver habit. Plus car shifts weird and stutters sometimes. They are no help and neither is corporate. I contacted the BBB and filing a claim against Nissan. They will not fix it cause the computer they plug into car says everything is ok. The car computer says it's getting 24 city but if you divide miles and gallons it's really getting 19 mpg city. NEVER BUY ANOTHER NISSAN AGAIN

Altima S 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 39,475 miles

Many others have reported this same problem. I work for a rental car company and bought this car from my employer. It is in beautiful condition and has been well maintained (regular oil changes). I have had it nearly 1 1/2 years and it runs like new. I drive 50% 60 to 70mph and 50% 25 to 45mph. Mileage at 10/19/2016 39,475 ; at 03/24/2018 46,018. Fuel mileage has been constant at 22 to 24mpg. I use the CVT and keep tire pressure at correct specs, filters all up to date. Any suggestions? I get generic answers from anyone else I ask and am told that my mileage is about 6 to 10 short of what it should be. Sorry if this question is repetitious, but I have yet to hear of a reasonable solution. 4 cyl engine.

Update from Apr 10, 2018: +After reading all the other complaints exactly like mine, I'll not look for an easy fix. My mileage for the past 10 or so years has averaged only 4,000, so I guess I can live with 23 + or - mpg based on how much I like the car's styling, comfort and convenience. Computing the mileage I get vs what I should get is costing me about $60 to $75 per year, so I'll have to chalk that up as one negative on a list of a lot of positives.

Altima S Special Edition 2.5L 4

  • CVT transmission
  • 6,469 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

I have driven my Altima for 6 months and have done 15 fillups. At least 2/3 of its 6469 miles have been highway miles. According to the Altima computer, I averaged 31.9 mpg. This should be higher with the weight of highway miles. The Altima computer, however, overestimates mpg by 2.93 mpg (I check every tank). I've reported this problem to Nissan twice. The first response was a canned one telling me how to get better mpg, i.e., driving habits. I also got that same canned response from the dealer. When I again complained to Nissan, they referred me to the dealer. The dealer checked and said that the computer is functioning properly.

I have asked Nissan to reprogram the computer. It is evidently figuring gas mileage as miles*1.0293 divided by fuel consumed, or miles divided by fuel consumed divided by 10293. Nissan has not even responded to this request.

So Nissan is badly projecting mileage as 27/38/31 and skewing their computed mpg to make it look better. This is as dishonest as VW's diesel debacle.

The car is very comfortable and dependable, but I'm disgusted with Nissan for their dishonesty both in advertising and computing mpg.

Update from Sep 1, 2016: My Altima now has 9406 miles on it. The computer shows 4.1 mpg greater than actual. In my previous note, I was showing the difference as a percentage. Mathematically, it is much, MUCH worse than previously shown. The miles would have to be multiplied by 1.14 (that's right: 14%) to achieve this difference. Or the gallons used could be divided by 1.14. Either way, this sucks big time. Nissan is extremely dishonest.

Altima SL 2.5L V4

  • CVT transmission
  • 10 miles

The Nissan factory specifications rate this vehicle at 27 mpg City / 38 mpg highway / 31 mpg combined. I have detailed logs of (24) fill-up's with how many highway, city, traffic miles were driven for each fill-up. I do NOT commute and rarely drive in traffic, so my MPG should be BETTER than the specifications for this vehicle - THEY ARE NOT. My average COMBINED MPG is 24.25 mpg for all (24) recorded fill-up's and only 60 miles were recorded in traffic, with 3019 highway /3678 city / 60 traffic recorded for 6757 total miles of the 8810 total miles on the car.

Once again Nissan REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY, and claims that it is "performing in specification" --- how is 24% LOWER MPG IN SPEC? This is tantamount to fraud and if the 24 mpg was listed on the car's specifications, I NEVER WOULD HAVE CONSIDERED BUYING IT.

Altima 2.4L

  • 1,100 miles

I purchased a 2015 Altima SL 2.4L in Oct 2015. Reason for the purchase was the Estimated Mileage of 27 city. All my traveling is done within the city. Sense I had the car my average mileage is 22 mpg. I am very annoyed with this. I will give it a few more weeks to see if anything improves. From what I read it mileage does not improve. if mileage does not improve I will be taking this car back to the dealer and making a formal complaint.

My 2013 Honda Accord stated 25 mpg that I week purchased mileage was 25 mpg and today it still is 25 mpg.

Will follow up within two week with my finding

Paid cash for my new 2015 Nissan Altima with the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder. I'm supposed to get 30 mpg city and 38 mpg hwy. The car has almost 4,000 miles on it and I average 24 city and 30 hwy. This is not good. Took it into dealer and they said car is working fine. Said car's computer said I was averaging 35mpg. I figure out my fuel economy every time I fill up. It's no where near 35. I left a complaint with Nissan. I will update when I get a reply.

Update from Sep 25, 2015: Contacted Nissan, we have been playing phone tag. When we talk, I will update again.

Altima 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 115 miles

Nissan USA claims it has nothing to do with the advertised mileage ratings of it's vehicles. Nissan USA told me the EPA is solely responsible for the EPA/DOT ratings that are advertised and placed on the window sticker! The EPA says that is not true and that the auto manufacturers submit their MPG ratings to the EPA database and the manufacturers are encouraged to reduce their MPG claims/ratings so as to not overstate these ratings.

I am the unfortunate victim and titled buyer of a 2.5 Nissan Altima which NISSAN has advertised as getting 27 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. I have about 3100 miles on the vehicle and it is averaging 22 MPG and 95 % of that is highway miles on mostly flat road. Nissan and the Dealer both are ignoring me and the issue. Nissan's CEO needs to investigate this matter and stand responsible. I advise anyone who is considering the purchase of a Nissan product to proceed with extreme caution. Get everything in writing that is advertised and anything the Dealer/Salesperson tells you also.

Update from Apr 21, 2015: This mega Lemon manufactured by Nissan now has over 4400 miles and the MPG is getting worse. Here follows the newest EXCUSES for poor MPG from several different Nissan Dealers. After being told by NISSAN USA that I needed to accrue 1500 miles before I would realize the advertised MPG which is 27 city and 38 highway I was told just today by a Nissan Dealer that the 'break-in' period for this garbage can is 5000 miles AND I will also need to drain the 5 w 30 oil and put in 0 w 20 synthetic oil. I was also advised that the 5000 mile break in period is necessary to 'center' and 'seat' the pistons. NO KIDDING! Another Nissan dealer told me to wait for the summer time fuel and to push the ECO drive button ( which does not exist on my 2015 Altima) and that would grant me the FALSELY advertised 38 mpg, highway. Yet another Nissan dealer advised me his girl friends KIA is supposed to get 38 mpg but only gets 34 mpg, REALLY! When I filed a complaint as per the Nissan supplemental warranty manual with the BBB auto hotline I was contacted by NISSAN USA and told NISSAN IS NOT responsible for the advertised MPG rating and I would have to address my complaint to the FEDERAL EPA. I contacted the EPA and the EPA advised me that I was indeed incorrectly informed! The lies and cover up continues and meanwhile I got a recall notice advising me the hood could fly open while driving. How delightful! I also emailed the CEO of NISSAN 'twice' with no reply. Another Nissan Dealer advised me that because I reside in Pennsylvania I cannot expect to achieve the again FALSELY advertised MPG of 27/38. I will also caution anyone who may decide to contact NISSAN USA that if you want the full name of the Nissan REP you are speaking to you may be told that you can only have a first name because the Nissan REPS do not wish to be harassed on the Internet. This is a real professional bunch of MORONS who are nothing more than trained liars who will promise you everything before you sign then tell you to FO after you sign like I have been told. BTW the lemon law in this case do not apply unless a component is replaced. It does not matter how poor the MPG. A repair or replacement of a component must occur before the 'Lemon Law' can be enacted. If you are considering the purchase or lease of a Nissan product I CAUTION YOU!

Update from Apr 30, 2015: Over 5000 miles and only averaging 24/25 MPG at best. Nissan contacted me and now wants one of their engineers to assess this LEMON. Nissan told me they want to test the fuel and keep the car for a few days because I explained that a proper MPG test requires a Full to Empty test. It appears they have agreed however I suspect a scam is in the works to attempt to fool me. Won't work so I am prepared to take the necessary action if they attempt to bluff me. I will update around mid May.

This POS made by Nissan is the absolute worst vehicle I have ever owned and NO support by Nissan USA or the selling Dealer, Sisson motors located in Washington, Pa. Sisson REFUSES to service this LEMON because according to TOM from Nissan, Sisson claims they don't feel they can help me, however, this being my 5th Altima I've leased from this dealer I suppose the dealer principal feels he has gotten an adequate amount of my money and to hell with me. This garbage can gets about 21 mpg on the highway. That is a far cry from the advertised 38mph highway!! Maybe that 'Break-in' Period is 20,000 miles not 2000 like I was told by the dealer and Nissan.

Since Sisson and Nissan USA refuse to do anything I am up for the challenge and I will prevail. I refuse to continue and make a monthly lease payment on this POS garbage that I now hear the hood may well fly open while driving. How nice. The FEDS need to examine this company very closely and the dealer also. Pay attention Sisson and Nissan. I am not going away and one or both of you will absorb the money damages this is costing me.

Update from Mar 12, 2015: This gas hog is averaging about 22.8 MPG and I stress that is 95% highway miles which is all level. This LEMON is set to go in for the required 3rd attempt to 'fix' it next month. Contacted the BBB auto help line as is required by Pa Lemon law as per Nissan's 2015 warranty info book, page 97. Filed the complaint and was advised Nissan USA would be provided my complaint information. I was contacted a few hours later by Nissan USA and this time I even got a person with a LAST NAME! I was ask what my complaint was about and I explained the car was not getting even close to the advertised MPG estimated ratings.

The 'arbitrator' from Nissan USA then advised me that NISSAN is NOT responsible for the advertised MPG rating and that those ratings are the sole responsibility of the EPA/DOT! Yes Indeed that is what Nissan USA told me so I contacted the EPA and they responded. Auto manufacturers test their own vehicles and enter into EPA's database the MPG rating they determined and have the right and also are encouraged to LOWER their MPG estimates so as to not overstate MPG ratings.

Once again NISSAN USA attempts to twist the truth and deny their responsibility. The Manufacturer has everything to do with their stated/advertised MPG ratings as per the EPA! I have emailed the CEO of NISSAN 'twice' with zero response. So much for NISSAN working tirelessly to 'solve' my problems with this gas hog, sulfur stinking, raw fuel smelling LEMON that the selling dealer located in Washington, Pa refuses to service despite this being my 5th Altima I have obtained via that 'Dealer'! When you pawn off a LEMON and refuse to assist a loyal customer who is getting screwed that means you are way too lax and comfortable with screwing the customer!

Nissan USA has fallen flat on it's face and does not know how to recover. I will continue to update and I suggest anyone who reads this to be extremely cautious if you are considering the purchase or lease of ANY NISSAN product!

This MPG of this LEMON is worsening daily. I am now down to 20 mpg combined and this is advertised at 27 city/38 highway. Nissan USA is dragging it's feet on a solution and buy back offer. The dealer, (Washington, Pa) refuses to service the car. The selling dealer is obligated to service this car yet the manufacturer says they are not. I disagree. Nissan is advertising falsely and this Dealer should be closed down, (Nissan Franchise revoked).

Sales Manager, Service manager and technician at this particular dealer are grossly incompetent and have no clue what customer service is about. They attempted, along with Nissan USA, to try and convince me the car had to accrue at least 1000 to 2000 miles before MPG would improve/meet EPA/DOT standards for this car. The car has 2200 miles and the MPG is worsening and the Sulfur smell, which is intermittent, prevents my wife from operating this vehicle because of her allergy to Sulfur.

Nissan does not care about it's customers and their standards are so low they have to look up to see the bottom. This car is a LEMON and Nissan knows it as well as the disgusting Dealer who looks down his nose at his customers and employees. SHAME ON NISSAN!

The FTC should look into false claims of MPG by this manufacturer!

Update from May 6, 2015: So now this POS LEMON has over 5k on the meter and it's is still sucking gas like a Humvee running from the insurgents in Iraq. I found the Exec in charge of Customer Quality Care, (What a Joke) and he directed some gofer to call me and arrange for the car to be evaluated by BILL the Nissan Engineer. Bill has no last name as most Nissan employees have no last name. I was told I would be provided a 'loaner' vehicle while BILL conducts his MPG test on my 2015 Altima so I ask Liz, the Quality Care executives coffee runner to email me so there would be no problems when I take this garbage can in for the MPG test.

I emailed her three times and like they did before they 'blocked' my emails and never responded and have yet to respond. This illustrates how unprofessional and childish this so called auto manufacturer operates. There it is, Nissan WORKING TIRELESSLY TO PISS OFF AND AVOID IT'S CUSTOMERS CONCERNS. Call your Congressman/women and Senator and DEMAND NISSAN have it's license to sell this junk in the USA revoked!
