My 2006 Nissan Frontier XE, with only 51,000 miles, suffered a transmission failure following 30 days of non-use and a dead battery. The truck had no signs of transmission trouble prior to the dead battery. After correctly jump starting the truck, the O/D light for the transmission came on and remained constantly on, and the transmission would only operate in one high forward gear and reverse. No failure codes, blown fuses or blown fusible links were found.
The truck was towed on a flatbed to the first Nissan dealer who was unable to find the cause of the problem over the course of one week. The truck was towed on a flatbed to a second Nissan dealer who identified the problem as a faulty transmission valve body and TCM. The first valve body installed did not work. The second valve body required various reprogramming consultations with Nissan Japan. Apparently the new replacement valve body manufactured by Hitachi was not interchangeable with the original valve body manufactured by Bosch. It took 15 days and $1,917 to get the truck back to good working order.
In my 42 years of working on cars I have experience many dead batteries, but never before had any of them caused a transmission failure. I feel robbed!
