Car started randomly having no power from a complete stop. Extremely dangerous, imagine starting to cross a major highway to find out you have minimal power and can't speed up fast enough. After some extensive research I found this has been a major issue with rogues and Nissan extended the warranty (to 10 yrs/120k miles) to fix the oil overheating and kicking the car into fail-safe mode with power reduction. I took my car to Nissan and they ran some tests on it and said indeed the transmission fluid is overheating.

My car had 117k miles on it so it was covered by warranty. They ordered an oil cooler kit and a valve body for it. I get those installed next week and hope this fixes the problem. This is an extreme safety risk and Nissan really should have recalled affected Rogues. I will not be purchasing another Nissan after the hell this car has put me through.

Traveling uphill on Route 80 westbound at 65 mph when all of a sudden speed started to decline. I pressed on gas with no response. I floored the pedal with still no response, speed still declining down to 55 mph. Tried to press gas as cars trucks flying by honking horns etc. Finally put hazards on to avoid crash. Transmission was fully stuck. I was able to make it uphill and transmission kicked back in to normal conditions. Very scary condition as I had 2 kids in car as well. Reading up others have had issues with the cvt transmission an what's worse, Nissan is aware of it.

Recently purchased a used 2009 Nissan Rogue at the 120328 mile mark. WELllllll we didn't even have it for a month (still have the paper plates), and while taking the oldest to college, she has several near collisions with a surging up and down transmission. Come to find out this is apparently a widely known issue with Nissan CVT transmissions who recognized a while back to graciously extend their warranty. We we took it to a Nissan dealership in San Marcos, TX (Nissan of San Marcos, talk to Ray at xtn 426) and now come to find out they want to charge $4,700.00 plus some extras to now fix it. I have also jumped on the bandwagon and opened a complaint up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in hopes of a recall because this is EXTREMELY dangerous for drivers. I also have an open case with Nissan Customer Affairs for this numerous customer complaint. This is very dangerous for the simple fact that drivers are EXTREMELY vulnerable in entering intersections, interstates, or to me just driving period due to the working fine and sudden up and down surge in acceleration and transmission surges/power or lack of to move the vehicle. When talking with the Nissan dealership, he adds that the transmission needs to be completely replaced and add a trans cooler. Well, to me, why isn't this already a part of the initial cure to their problem with the CVT transmission?

I was going to Florida for my daughter's softball tournament. Between going there and coming back the transmission overheated over 40 times. I ended up getting it hauled part of the way back home. It had happened before but not often and very intermittent so I did not take it in to have it looked at. The dealership told me there was nothing wrong with the transmission but it had overheated over 40 times and Nissan recommends a cooler be added. Nissan extended the warranty on the transmission to 120000 because they knew there was a problem but the dealership nor Nissan informed me that it may need a cooler added. I went round and round with the dealership and Nissan but to no avail. Because it was over the 120000 they would not cover the $1100 to fix it. It is a safety issue because you may not realize it is happening until you take an exit and pull out into traffic and the car won't go but 5 mile an hour.

THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE! - Over the past few years, I filed a complaint to the NHTSA and made numerous complaints to the dealer service center about this on going problem with their CVT. Nissan and NHTSA consider this minor because not enough people that are experiencing these issues are reporting it to the NHTSA. Going online and complaing to various forums doesn't help to get a recall. You have to report these issues to NHTSA.gov

I commute everyday on the NJ Turnpike. I have to make stops 'to let the engine/CVT cool off' both going and coming home from work [and it's worse in hotter temps] because the car will not accelerate. I barely get over to the shoulder in high speed traffic. Sometimes if there isn't an immediate shoulder, I have to crawl at a speed of 5-10 MPH in high-speed Turnpike traffic of 60-80 MPH to finally get to a shoulder. I then have to take local routes for the remainder of the commute because there are too many hills on the GS Parkway for this car to get over without a problem.

I already replaced one CVT in this car. This problem has been going on since 2009 when I purchased this car. Now I see on the NHTSA site in 2014 Nissan came up with a 'FIX' to replace/install a cooler kit and a transmission oil cooler. The two kits cost about $860 without installation. Why is this cost passed on to us the consumers? This a known problem with the Nissan CVT design. Nissan should make good on their promise to the customer and recall the vehicles with this CVT issue to replace/install the needed parts without making the consumer pay for their defective vehicle design.

OH and as I said earlier, I have been complaing to the dealer service center for years including 2014 and none of the service techs ever mentioned the cooler kit FIXES to me. Their response was that they could not duplicate the problem I was having with the car. I would have never known about the 'FIX' if I didn't see it in the NHTSA Manufactures info section.

I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER NISSAN AND I TELL EVERYONE I KNOW ABOUT THESE CVT ISSUES. There are numerous 100+ Complaints on the NHTSA site about the CVT and if you do a search on Google more complaints show up on various forums.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO GET A RECALL?

WHY DO THE CONSUMERS HAVE TO PAY FOR NISSAN'S FAULTY CVT DESIGN?

Car would not accelerate, just stopped, after going up a hill, had to pull over 3 times, car then would work again, thought we had a battery problem. Car was not drive able after stopping for 3 hours, and had to have it towed ( waited 5 hours for the tow) Mechanic friend said " Transmission problem" Started checking online and low and behold we are not the only ones that are experiencing this problem, Nissan does not give you any information nor do they tell you about the extended warranty to cover this problem. Also there seems to be a connection with the transmission problem and the A/C Compressor, as now the A/.C did not cool.

Having the car stop is a very dangerous and scary situation, waiting to see what the dealer is going to do.

I have 2009 Nissan Rogue and I continue to have the problem of no acceleration after driving for about an one hour at 70MPH. I recently went home to IOWA from Wisconsin a seven hour drive and was unable to continue the drive in the same day because of this problem. I had to have a family member drive and meet me because the car was not accelerating. On return trip I was only able to go 60MPH on the interstate that is a 70MPH plus road. It is myself and my two young children. This is so dangerous and not sure what to do about this besides continue to write complaints every time it happens. This is not the first time it has happened and will continue to complain as it does happen.

I bought my 2009 Nissan Rogue brand new, from the Glendale Nissan Dealership in California. At 50k I began having Transmission issues. Where, the car would not accelerate and when coming to a complete stop it would take about 3-5 seconds to kick in the gear and start to move. Each time this issue came up was prior to 60k miles from each time my car got "FIXED"

I have had this issue on 4 separate occasions. First they replaced the transmission. Second they did a diagnostic and came to the conclusion it was the transmission computer unit and the wiring harness for the transmission. Which was not covered under warranty. So I paid $2300 to get it fixed. Third they replaced the transmission again! Now this being the fourth time I took it in before the warranty expired at 119,589 miles. The dealer service dept. said it wasn't doing it and that they cant do anything about it.

Every time my wife and my kids and I go on long trips, at about and hour into the drive it will begin to have the acceleration issue. Going up hills the car wont go pass 40MPH. Which, is pretty scary when I have my family in the car.

I contacted consumer affairs and put in a claim case. Will follow up with details on how that goes. Oh, and I spoke to a lawyer which recommended contacting consumer affairs.

Update from Dec 29, 2015: So an update on the status of my complaint with Nissans Consumer Affairs. I spoke to one of their reps out of Tennessee and she said that in order for me to either get a replacement car or for Nissan to buy my car back, they need to put in a buy back request. Which, she did and now they have to pull all the records of all the cars previous maintenance issues. Since this is the only issue I have had since I bought they car, that shouldn't take very long. I have spoken to her twice since Dec. 14, 2015. First time was to get my complaint and the second, was to tell me that Nissan is still looking into it. I should be hearing back from her today, maybe this afternoon. Ill keep you posted

For the past few months we have been dealing with Nissan regarding problems that began a year ago with our 2009 Rogue CVT transmission. There are so many problems with this transmission that warranties extended to 120,000 miles. We learned this from the local Nissan service dept. as we never received notification from Nissan Corp. making us aware of this problem or the extended trans. warranty.

Transmission overheats and goes into "fail safe" mode to protect itself from burning up. Car loses acceleration and doesn't recover until car is turned off and trans allowed to cool. Eventually trans will fail completely. After filing claim with Nissan Consumer Affairs we complied with their request by providing replication of trans problem via video, audio and written notes taken while it was happening. District field rep told local Nissan agency service dept. to install external trans cooler to try to fix trans problem (as instructed in Technical Service Bulletin NTSB14-002b - 8/13/14) - cost $1,000 - WE PAY!!!

Nissan needs to pay this charge -- whatever part fixes a warranty part should also be considered a warranty item. We protested this charge to regional specialist but Nissan still won't cover repair cost. So nothing has been done to repair car -- when trans completely goes out and we have probably caused an accident or are left stranded on side of road, Nissan will have to replace warranted transmission.

BE WARNED! Nissan Corp. will not provide customer satisfaction, issue a recall, or stand behind their product. Needless to say, we will not be purchasing another Nissan vehicle - ever.

I was driving my 2009 Nissan Rogue on 08/03/15 when my SUV began to lose power and went from 70 miles an hour to no more than 40 miles. An 18 wheeler almost ran me over and I had to get off highway and wait about an hour and 20 mins for SUV to pick up speed.

I called Nissan and was told due to SUV having a continuous variable transmission it shuts down when it overheats due to long distance driving. I told them I did not understand what they meant. I was told due to SUV having a CVT transmission Nissan had extended my transmission warranty to 10 years 120,000.

I was told anyone having this issue needs to call 1-800-647-7261 AND HAVE YOUR VIN# CHECKED. NISSAN WILL NOT DO A TOTAL RECALL BUT THEY HAVE EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON ALL VEHICLES WITH A CVT (CONTINUOUS VARIABLE TRANSMISSION) DUE TO THE PROBLEM LISTED ABOVE. PASS THIS ALONG TO ANY NISSAN OWNER POST ON INSTAGRAM AND ANY SOCIAL MEDIA YOU CAN I DON’T WANT ANYONE TO DIE BECAUSE NISSAN WONT OWN UP TO A JACK UP TRANSMISSION THEY PUT IN THESE CARS.

To add insult to injury I took car to World Car Nissan in San Antonio Texas on 08/04/15 and after waiting 2 days and getting no call from Nissan when I called them I was told due to Texas weather being hot Nissan will install a transmission fan to cool the transmission but there was nothing wrong with the transmission itself.

I called another Nissan dealer and asked in general about CVT transmissions in their Nissan vehicles and they stated they are weather proof and thoroughly inspected for heat and cold weather. I then went one step further and called Honda and Subaru which also use CVT transmissions and was told the same thing.

It is now Friday 08/05/15 and Nissan has told me I need a transmission oil change which will cost me $179 and they will replace fan for free and provide me a rental car until vehicle is fixed but they don't have any rentals at this time so I have to sit and wait for one and can only use it in the city...oh wait I just got a call and I can take it out of town but they still don't have a car available until later today after probably 2 or 3pm and the saga continues. I will keep you posted.

If only I had known my Rogue CVT transmission had serious issues, I could have gotten it in under the warranty, I think. But who starts trolling for issues when their car just doesn't accelerate as nicely as it used to, and for the most part runs okay? When once this winter it didn't have enough power to back out of a slanted driveway I had my mechanic look at it, he had me run codes, nothing appeared, we flushed the transmission, and all was fairly well. . . .so I kept on driving past my warranty expiration. Finally it went into full fail safe mode on a hot day on a long drive.

We made it home and I took it to the Nissan dealer and when they ran codes I was told I need a new transmission. Which of course I cannot afford. Then I find out this happens ALL THE TIME! And that Nissan doesn't really care. I have of course written to them a week ago and so far no reply but based on what I read, I don't expect one. My question is: can I get a non CVT transmission to use in this car that will last better??

Update from Sep 10, 2015: Things I have learned: 1. Nissan as a corporation is not good. I sent a letter asking for advice, waited weeks, got strange reply that made no sense along with new address to complain to, which I did. After a week or so, that was returned as not a valid address. 2. My local mechanic said I ought to take the car to a transmission shop which I was reluctant to do due to all I read about these transmissions needing replaced. This very smart guy found the issue was electrical in nature. So for $317.49 he replaced a brake switch and a battery terminal. So far the car is running great. He said it's much EASIER to charge $4000 to replace something than actually look for the issue, and that often even when they replace the transmission, when that isn't the whole issue, people get stuck with the additional repair afterwards, or they fix that part "for free". I guess what I learned was Get a Second Opinion before spending all that money to replace your transmission.

We noticed the sluggish transmission almost 2 years ago, moved from NJ to OH and had to go over some pretty steep mountains. Semi trailers were passing me and what should have been a 9-10 hr trip took 13 hrs because of the transmission.

Took it to a useless dealership Busam Nissan in Cincinnati and they said there was nothing wrong with the transmission, not once but twice. The last episode with the tranny just happened a few weeks ago, you could smell oil burning and the Rogue, when going up the slightest incline, could only do 50 mph. We had to pull over and let it cool off before we could return home safely.

Took it back to that same dealership when we found out Nissan had extended their "token" warranty to 120K miles but to no avail, the service department said there was nothing wrong with the transmission even though they never test drove it after being asked to do so two times. It now whines and shakes and can only be driven for 1 hr until it starts overheating.

I guess until people start getting killed in accidents because of this transmission Nissan will remain indifferent?

Update from Jun 27, 2015: After 2 negligent experiences at Busam Nissan in Cincinnati, we found a dealership who actually took the Rogue for a test drive, contacted Nissan the same day and got approval to replace not only the tranny but the culprit oil cooler. I read the extended warranty online, and thought it said we would be responsible for labor but this cost us nothing out of pocket. We don't have an official report regarding the failure but it was as easy as calling this particular dealer, telling them not to hook it to a machine but to take it for a test ride, they actually did what we asked and we got our Rogue back in 3 days - if you live in Cincinnati and are experiencing this same issue, take your Rogue to Clay Cooley Nissan on Colerain - I would actually consider purchasing another Nissan because of them.

World Car Nissan informs me that the repair for my 2009 Nissan Rogue is covered under warranty; however, there are no parts available. I notified Nissan in May 2014. A transmission oil cooler is needed. I understand that many Nissan Rogues throughout the US are needing this part. When the vehicle is driven for over an hour the transmission oil overheats and the vehicle looses acceleration. The vehicle will start dropping from 80 mph to 70 mph to 60 mph and then I exit the highway and turn off the vehicle and let it sit for 10 - 15 minutes and then restart. The vehicle does drive but the acceleration is horrible. It can be dangerous when there is high traffic. The vehicle needs to sit overnight. The vehicle is OK when driven at 40 mph but not any faster.

I notified World Car in May 2014 of this problem and it is August and I am still waiting. I don't understand and they have not explained to me why this part is not available. There are universal transmission oil coolers available at NAPA auto parts but they do not want to go that route. They want the Nissan owners to wait. But for how long???? I was informed that the part would be available in July, now they are telling me maybe in October. I know there are other Rogue owners are waiting for this part.

The CTV transmissions in the Rogues have been a problem since the 2008 model and Nissan is still using this CTV in the 2014 models. And they too are having problems. Why use a part that is causing problems?? Have any of the Rogues been repaired??? Are the Rogues being repaired correctly?? Nissan Customer Care has Marie calling me twice a week to tell me she knows nothing. That Nissan Customer Care center is a joke. So I sit and wait. I don't understand all of this mess with Nissan. I don't understand why they keep using a defective part in new cars. After this mess, I won't be purchasing another Nissan. I will go back to Hyundai. Hyundai doesn't use CTV transmissions.
