A few years ago my 2006 1.8S ("Special Edition") Sentra began having problems starting in the summer. It would crank but not start on the first try, then finally start on the second. I put up with it for awhile until one day the car shut off completely at about 20mph. The "fix" for the shut-off problem was to replace the crank sensor, and then problem didn't recur, but hard starting remained.
The "hard starting" was despite having previously replaced the fuel pump assembly with a Nissan OE one at around 50k miles, and after only 35k or so at 85k, hard starting began.
Problem was not fixed until finally replacing fuel pump assembly entirely with a superior aftermarket unit (from Spectra) recently in 2019.
It appears that the OE fuel pump assembly is simply faulty or somehow prone to early failure.
