CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013-2017 Nissan Sentra has an expensive CVT transmission failure defect that shows up plainly in our complaint data.

In late 2019, the CVT defect was subject to a class action settlement. However the settlement only covers transmission repairs up to 7 years after purchase or 84,000 miles (whichever occurs first).

Because many owners commonly drive 20,000 miles/year or more, Sentra owners experiencing CVT transmission problems may find they are not covered by this settlement due to the mileage limitation.

I purchased four sumi tour plus lsw tires in October 2016. In October 2018, a bulge was discovered in one of the sidewalls. The company I bought the tires from suggested the tire must have been damaged by a pothole (even though I live in Florida where there are few, if any, potholes.) in April 2020, another bulge was discovered in one of the three remaining original tires. Both bulges occurred with the tires having less than the 50,000 mile warranty. I contacted the tire manufacturer and was told the bulges were "impact bubbles, " which is not a defect, but a road hazard. I find this hard to believe, as I have hit potholes in the past that have actually dented my rim, but never have I had bulges occur in the tires themselves in all my years of driving...let alone two bulges in under two years.

While in motion the passenger side ball joint did break. This allowed the wheel to become non responsive and caused the drive axle to break. If the vehicle was going at highway speed at the time, there would have been a severe accident to say the least.

20013 Nissan Sentra with less than 75K miles. Making a left turn and heard a loud pop. Left front ball joint broke off the lower control arm causing the control arm to smash through the tire rim and rip out the axle from the transmission. My vehicle was traveling at less than 5 mph (thank god!) I would not have reported this but I saw the same thing happened to another car. I jacked it up immediately and car was flatbedded to mechanic and control arms on both sides, ball joints and axle was replaced.

Transmission failed at 85,000. I started having problems gaining speed; then the car would start shaking, jerking and pausing. I was driving on highway 152 on my way to san jose, ca when my car started losing speed and shaking. I thought I was going to get stuck in the middle of the road. It was terrifying. I made it to work and started doing research about what my car was doing and find out it was the transmission. I took it to the dealer and they confirmed it was the transmission. Nissan tech. Told me to call Nissan usa, so I did. They gave a case number and they communicated with the dealer to confirm the transmission had failed. Nissan agreed to pay part of the cost to repair transmission even though I told them that it was too soon for the transmission to fail. Nissan is charging me 2000 to fix it. I honestly think Nissan should start repairing all transmissions without a cost for customers. They know their transmissions have defects. I will try to sell my car as soon as possible as they are only going to give me one year warranty.

The contact owns a 2013 Nissan Sentra. While driving approximately 20 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and there was a loud grinding noise coming from all of the wheels. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the diagnosis was unknown. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 126.

While applying the brake pedal decelerating the car, the car suddenly had a very loud grinding noise on the rear passenger wheel, like the brake rotor grinding against some metal parts that broke loose inside. After stopping the car inspecting passenger rear wheel and found nothing, I got back to the car slowly accelerating it. The loud grinding noise got worse and I felt the brake pedal kinda light (like not all 4 brakes are being applied). I suspect the brake shoes or components broke apart inside the brake drum of the rear wheel (passenger side). Fortunately, I was at slow speed (20-30mph) and only one block away from home. Will have it towed to the local Nissan dealer to have it checked out as I only had this car for about 7-8 month from brand new. Since this is an all-new design 2013 Sentra, I am concern this is a flaw on the brake design that could cause extreme dangerous hazards on the road. Though my car should be covered under manufacturer 36-month bumper to bumper warranty, I am strongly asking to have the rear brake system on the 2013 Nissan Sentra investigated and recalled / corrected if necessary. This would help not only protect my family, my investment, but also others from running into the same incident operating this particular model in the future.
