CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2014-2017 Nissan Versa Note has an expensive CVT transmission failure defect that shows up plainly in our complaint data from earlier model years for the same generation.

In late 2019, the CVT defect was subject to a class action settlement. However the settlement only covers transmission repairs up to 7 years after purchase or 84,000 miles (whichever occurs first).

Because many owners commonly drive 20,000 miles/year or more, Versa Note owners experiencing CVT transmission problems may find they are not covered by this settlement due to the mileage limitation.

Versa Note LX 4 cyl

  • 130,884 miles

Being good at mechanics, many small things were just a minor inconvenience. The 2015 Nissan Versa Note 4 cylinder engine ran ran strong and smooth. My main beef up to the time the transmission died was two spark plugs that were totally inaccessible and have never been replaced. I loved getting 34 - 38 MPG on the highway. (I live in the country and most of the 130,860 miles were on the highway).

I went to a Dr. appointment and was returning home. I was stopped at a red light. When the light turned green I stepped on the gas to turn the corner. The car made an awful grinding noise that shook the car, then, it was like the car was in neutral. The engine was running fine but the car wouldn't move. I had to have the car towed home.

I've looked at other complaints and they say it will cost $6,000 to replace the transmission. It's not worth it to me to fix it. I lifted the front end and the CV trans-axles seem fine.

I would rather invest $6,000 towards a newer car.

Versa Note LS

  • Automatic transmission
  • 24,000 miles

At 24,000 miles a car should NOT need a new transmission!!! I went to the dealership I bought it from 3 times and they said that the whining noise was normal, finally when I took it in a 4th time they had a new service manager and he immediately put me in a loaner car and either replaced or rebuilt the transmission. Either way it was really annoying and now at 46,000 its starting to slip again! What a piece of junk!!! I will go back to Honda or Toyota but NEVER Nissan. I will NEVER EVER buy another Nissan.

Versa Note

  • CVT transmission
  • 61,500 miles

I'm horrified that my brand "new" used car that I bought a year ago, at 54k miles needs a new transmission. This is suppose to be our reliable car!!!! I've had cars 20 years old that never needed new transmissions. It was just over warranty by 1500 miles and Nissan refused to offer any financial assistance. And doing research since, I see this is a common problem. I'm disgusted that companies are putting out sh*t products now a days and then just leave you with the mess....

Who protects consumers???? I'm going to wind up losing 6k minimum on this car. 6k of my hard earned money.... this is CRAZY that this can happy. Nissan should really be ashamed of themselves. The worst part is their transmissions do this at like 60/85k all the time so I obviously don't want to keep the car. It's worthless to me now.

I would have saved a LOT of hassle by just throwing 12k in a toilet and flushing it. Minus marrying my first husband, buying this Nissan is the worst decision I have made in my adult life.

transmission stalls, no power

I bought this car pre-owned certified and warrantied (power train) for a year, from Enterprise Car Sales in Elmwood NJ. I took it to the Nissan dealership to be worked on, thinking this video would prove there's a problem. Nope. Not enough proof. They would have to charge me $138 for diagnostics which, like 6 weeks ago when the car did this, will show nothing: it doesn't "throw a code", and the engine light is NOT on. And of course, it behaves fine for the mechanic. The warranty doesn't cover diagnostics. The CVT is notorious for malfunctioning. Nissan has at least 2 class action suits. Yet, I have no protection, as a consumer, because the mechanic himself can't find a problem. Hello!? I called Nissan, and am waiting for answer -- I want my CVT rebuilt or a new one put in. It is not safe to drive. And I don't want to hear that they can't find a problem. Do I have to get in a crash, before they will pay attention to me?

Versa Note

  • Automatic transmission
  • 601 miles

This was my first new car and was really please with car until check engine light came on, was told to take car to nearest Nissan dealer. When checked was told that it needed new transmission and that something electrical was also wrong with it. Car had 601 miles when transmission went out on it. One dealership had car for six weeks.

Went to dealership where I bought car and they gave me a new car but after one month was told that I needed to bring car back and they would give me a rental car. I have made three car payments and still don't have a car that is mine. Am now being told by dealership that Nissan is saying put another transmission, this will be third transmission and new chip in car.

I need my car. Nissan needs to please replace this car with a new one and not another Versa Note. Be very careful when buying a car and don't recommend another car if they are not going to replace the bad car. Help will contact a lawyer if need be.
