CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004 Nissan Xterra doesn't seem to have any problem trends. The only thing prospective owners should be aware of are the less-than-perfect (but acceptable) crash test ratings.

There are a very few transmission complaints, but nothing like the huge defect that shows up starting in with the 2005 model year.

My Xterra vibrates and chug chug chugs as you press the gas pedal to accelerate. It is almost as if the car is running out of gas, when it has a full tank. I can put the car in neutral, rev the engine and get it to go again for a while before it starts to do the problem again. I have taken it to over 6 mechanics, with bills to prove it, this includes 2 Nissan Dealers. Each time they have no idea what the problem is, I have gone through everything form MAF sensor to new distributor with charges galore and Nissan still has no idea what the problem is. Just recently the O/D light started flashing upon turning the car on. It is no longer drive-able on the freeway, since it starts to stall out at any moment. My concern is how can a Nissan dealer not diagnose it's own Nissan vehicle correctly. This is ridiculous! I have charges and still the problem is not fixed. It has been over 6 months! and nothing! I need someone's help soon, my money is running out, I can't even get to work to pay any of my student loans! When I purchased this Nissan I never anticipated such problems! The guys at the mechanic shop also said it's crazy! They said it's a fluke problem, they usually have cars where the light comes on they diagnose and the problem goes away. There is no solution in sight for me! What can I do? I have no money for a new car!

AFTER ONLY 81,000 OUR TRANSMISSION IS GONE ON OUR 2004 NISSAN XTERRA DUE TO A LEAK FROM THE RADIATOR, WE HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WHICH EXPIRED IN AUGUST OF 2011 WHICH IS JUST GREAT SINCE WE NEVER HAD A NEED TO USE IT ALL THE WHILE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY, GO FIGURE. NISSAN WAS VERY RUDE TO MY HUSBAND WHEN HE CALLED TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING THEY COULD DO TO HELP OUT SINCE THE DEALER WANTED $3200 JUST FOR PARTS TO FIX THE PROBLEM SO WE WERE PROBABLY LOOKING AT AROUND $6000 PLUS TO FIX AT THE DEALER WHICH WAS NOT HAPPENING. NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER AGAIN WILL I BUY A NISSAN, I HAVE READ SO MANY NEGATIVE THINGS ONLINE NOW. PEOPLE DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BUY ANY CAR, UNFORTUNATELY WE DIDN'T AND IT COST US. THANKFULLY WE HAVE SOMEONE WHO WAS WILLING TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION FOR US FOR $2500 SO HOPEFULLY WE WILL BE UP AND RUNNING IN A WHILE.
