CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005-2007 Xterra appears to have a widespread defect where coolant leaks into the transmission, causing transmission failure around 90,000 miles. Repair costs are typically upwards of $3,500.

The same defect exists in the Pathfinder & Frontier as well. And according to the New York Times & a class action lawsuit, the defect actually extends through 2010 model year. More info here.

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated when starting the vehicle, the check engine light illuminated on the dashboard. In addition, the fuel level indicator would read inaccurate fuel levels. The contact proceeded to drive the vehicle and noticed that the fuel level indicator would fluctuate between gas level readings. A local independent mechanic advised that the fuel level sensor would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure persisted. The failure mileage was 64,000 and the current mileage was 66,000.

The contact stated this failure is similar to the failure in recall 10V074000 (component: Fuel system, other: Storage: Fuel gauge system). The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the fuel gauge sending unit was replaced. The current mileage was approximately 59,000. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.
