CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005-2007 Xterra appears to have a widespread defect where coolant leaks into the transmission, causing transmission failure around 90,000 miles. Repair costs are typically upwards of $3,500.

The same defect exists in the Pathfinder & Frontier as well. And according to the New York Times & a class action lawsuit, the defect actually extends through 2010 model year. More info here.

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. The fuel level sending unit inside the fuel tank has fail. The fuel gauge does not accurately show the level of fuel that was left in the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that they can repair the vehicle at the contact's expense. There was a recall NHTSA# 10V075000; component: Fuel system, gasoline: Storage: Auxillary but her VIN was not included in the recall. At 32,000 miles the clutch failed on the highway when driving 50 mph. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was repaired at a cost of $1500. The manufacturer also stated her VIN was not included in the recall and they will not cover the repairs of both failures. The failure mileage was 53,000.

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle began to independently decelerate until reaching 20 mph and would not travel over the speed. There was also a burning odor coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the clutch was burned out. The dealer replaced the disc assembly, fly wheel and clutch. The failure did not recur. The failure mileage was 27,661 and the current mileage was 27,701.
