I am now trying the 10 min job to fix my car for the 2nd time. It works, but why oh why does this keep happening. I am going to try and disconnect the pass lock and see how that goes. Does anyone know if there has been a recall on this product.???

Update from Jul 8, 2014: since last episode of not starting and having to wait the 10 mins to re-start.Noe the security light stay on constantly.

Went out this morning to take kid to school and Alero wont start. Which happens ALL to often w this car. Luckily while researchin MANY past issues w this heap, I had read about the pass lock theft system. So I came inside and found the info to reset it and it worked. But everyone was 15 mins late. Between the head gasket blowing due to bad design and dex coolant and this issue i wouldn't wish an Alero on my worst enemy. Next time i buy a Ford.

Hey everybody with a Passlock problem where the lights will not illuminate! Before you invest any money or time in taking your car in for repair, ask that the person servicing your vehicle (or DIY'r):

1. To make certain that the battery terminals are clean & free of any corrosion (this means brushing the battery post/nut and the car connector from the car), and tightened correctly.

2. Re-check. If the interior lights come on and shine bright it should start. If not

3. Reset all of the Body Control Module connectors.

4. Re-check. If the interior lights come on and shine bright it should start. If not

5. Go to http://www.bergerweb.net/AleroSecurity/index.shtml and this final fix should get you going without any further worries. Thanks to the Author- Richard M. Berger.

Alero GL 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 135,000 miles

I stopped to get gas and tried to leave and engine wouldn't turn over. I called for a tow which cost me $45 and it was a weekend so had to wait til Monday to get my car. They said it was the security system and charged me $35. Then it happened again about 6 weeks later, had car towed again, but luckily I have a mechanic with a conscience, he told me to turn the key to the ON position for 5-10 minutes until security light goes out then turn key back off and start it. Since the first time, this happens about every 6 weeks and always at the most inopportune times.

Pulled car into parking lot shut car off and when came back to car security light on and ignition locked. Had 8 mechanics look at it and no suggestions except bypass security system and ignition.
