This is a followup about my starting problems with the Alero -- engine turns but never starts. The fuel pump was good; the mechanic changed something relating to the "oil pressure switch" It was about a 30$ piece. But in addition to the time it took to investigate the problem, and the tow, it rang up to over two hundred dollars. Hopefully this fixed the problem. My fingers are crossed.

I just purchased this car last week on Tuesday. On Thursday it turned over but wouldn't start. I waited for a little bit and it did end up starting. It did it later that evening. Took it back to the dealer I purchased it from on Friday. They had it and said it would always start for them and that they were keeping it until Monday. I picked the vehicle up first thing Monday morning and they said they replaced the Fuel Pressure Regulator and were confident that this would solve the problem. Took it up the road to a gas station 10 miles and when I got back in it did the same damn thing!!! After waiting awhile it started though. This car has 44,500 miles on it and is nice other than this problem....... after reading everyone's complaints I wish I never would have bought it. I wish I knew about this website BEFORE I made the purchase.. I will sure use it in the future. And was there a recall on the turn signals?

Usually, this problem is caused by the computer cutting power to the fuel pump because it thinks its being stolen. If you had a remote start installed make sure the bypass module is not interfering with the keys turnover reporting to the computer. We have a 2001 alero and a 2001 malibu that occasionally does this. I know its from the bypass module, but I want to keep my remote start so I deal with it. It is also most likely a faulty read output from turning the key. If the car cranks but doesn't turn over, turn the car back off. Turn the key to on, notice the security light will flash (if it goes off right away it is not passlock). Wait 10 minutes the light will go to steady on, then it will shut off. Turn the key off and take the key out, wait 10 seconds. Turn your car to start and that will get you going. Any GM dealer can read the codes from the computer to tell you whether its the key, or strickly related to the fuel pump.

I hate this car at this point. I cannot believe that so many people have complained about this and they haven't done a recall on the fuel pump. Had an independent mechanic replace the fuel pump & that fixed the problem.

This is horrible i was at the doctors with my daughter when i came out the car won't start it was like 40 degrees outside and we had to wait 30 mintues for someone to come and pick us up. I just bought this car and now when i turn it on the engine won't start it turns but wont start. i got a new fuel pump but that wasn't the problem got a piece for the engine that didn't work. What will fix this problem so me and my daughter can get around. Also what about the turn signals that does't work all the time either. then when i try to use my hazard signals they won't work either. what can we do about this. If someone has an answer will they please tell me.

This Damn Car... The problem started the day I brought it home from the used car dealership. They came and got it and it started right up. They did not mention what they did to fix the problem. About 6 months later the car wouldnt start again, would crank but not start. Had my uncle take a look, he released the fuel pressure from the test port on the engine. The car started right up. On August 29, 2006 wouldnt start again. Started by releasing the pressure, didn't work. Thought it might be the fuel system. Changed the fuel filter in the heat of Texas mid-day, Didnt start. Pressed the panic button on the alarm and it started right up. Now, a week later it will crank but not start. I cant understand it.

Same issues for past 2 years, cranks but won't start. Have replaced fuel pump 5 times, the fuel relay switch once, sometimes it just starts again after sitting for awhile. Finally took it in thinking fuel pressure issues, alas no, fuel pump is fine. Dealer says first of all our battery is too low, so our security passlock is losing it's code and doesn't recognize our key so won't start. A new battery will help, but will happen again he says. Need to replace to pass lock key assembly and then have it recoded to our key. To the tune of $365+tax. I guess this is the next step. AARRGGHH!!! Will let ya know!

Ok... I see I'm not alone. 2001 Olds Alero will turn over but wont start. Had it towed to the garage... they had it for 4 days. First they said it was the fuel pump... although I knew it wasn't. It was getting fuel and spark so they spent a whole day putting in a new fuel pump and then took it out when they realized that wasn't the problem. Then they put it on a scanner (so they said) and told me it was the computer module.. OK im ready to pay over $1,000 but when i picked the car up they said it was the fuel pump after all and that they had put a bad one in previously. $603.00 dollars and 7 days later.. my car is sitting in my drive way... not starting. Did anyone ever come up with a solution to this problem? HELP!

Same problem. Wife bought car in 2003 and had the starting problem. Would turn over but not crank. Dealership could not find problem, but it just went away. All the sudden the car left her stranded at the grocery store (2006). Fuel pump seems to be working, good spark, battery is good. I've heard it may be a fuel relay switch, so I may try and get one of those. From what I've researched and seen on this site, it's a very common, very complex problem. Any help will be appreciated!

Same thing. The car won't freaking start. Turns over, but won't crank. Very wierd. I started by replacing the camshaft position sensor. Sweet! my car runs again. But only for a week. Then I replaced the crankshaft position sensor. Sweet! My car runs again. But wait... only for a freaking week. Now I'm pissed. So I haul it to my Uncle's house. He's a damn good mechanic. He can help. Well he can't seem to get it to stop running. So I drive it home. Next day, dead. So I tow it to a local mechanic and pay 600 big ones to replace the fuel filter and pump. My car runs again. But only for about 24 hours. Needless to say it's at my uncle's house again. He thinks it may be the oil pressure sensor. If it goes out, the computer thinks the pressure is low and shuts off to keep the engine from overheating or blowing. It seems too that maybe everything that goes wrong with this vehicle is causing it not to start, so there may not be one sole solution. I will report back with the results when I have my car back.

Engine will crank, but not start, acts as though no gas is being introduced. Vehicle has been towed and would start at dealership. Diagnostic has been run and no problem indicated. Got car to start with co worker turning ignition and my beating on fuel tank. Was this a fluke? Are we to have a two person and a sledge hammer requirement for this vehicle? I would like to know if anybody has received injury due to this besides the cost and inconvenience. Where is the recall?

One day I was at the gas pump, got through pumping gas, got in the car and it would not crank. I had it towed to a dealership and they reset my security system. A few days ago I went to go to work and surprise, surprise it wouldn't crank again! It will turn over, but it will not crank. I had it towed and the people at the dealership got it to crank right up.

Bought the car used. Almost immediately noticed that the engine would turn too long before starting. After about a month, it wouldn't start. Like it wasn't getting gas. Replaced starter. Replaced fuel pump. Replaced battery. GM was actually rather nice about paying for the repairs even though the car was technically over the warranty (by a few weeks). Note, the dealer wouldn't hear of extending the warranty, and said GM wouldn't. I had to contact GM myself (bypassing the dealer) to get the money.

In any event, the car started OK for about 1.5 years; OK meaning, it started, but not confidently. Today the same problem has resurfaced: the engine turned but the car wouldn't start. And so I was stranded. The mechanic arrived to give me a tow and on the spot he said he thinks it's the fuel pump. Again? I told him about my past troubles and he said he'll investigate. This is a major issue.

This car has been a pain in the ass for some time now. It started out with the turn signals not working which were finally fixed once they issued a recall. During the same time the cruise control button stopped working. I actually have to hold down the button in order for it to work. What's the point of cruise control if I have to do that?? Then finally, the darn car stopped cranking. It turns over but never fires up. For four days the car would not crank up, had a diagnostic test done and it found no defects. On the fifth day, I had it towed to another GM dealer and as soon as the mechanic turned the key it fired up!!! I was pissed. He told me that it was the security alarm that was causing the problem. He said most likely someone had pulled the door handle and triggered the anti-theft system. When that happens, it stops the car from getting the gas needed to crank up. He also suggested that I make the alarm go off and use the keyless entry to turn it off if it should happen again. Well, it happened again, I did what was suggested and the darn thing still did not crank up!!! Replacing the fuel pump and fuel fuses didn't work and ignition sensors appear to be fine. Obviously, there's more to the problem and no one not even the manufacturers know what it is or how to fix. So, if anyone out there have any suggestions please pass them along this way b/c I am too tired of giving the dealership money and them not giving me a working solution.

While attempting to start the vehicle. The damn thing would turn over but not start, and when it did the rpms would be too low to bring it up to idling speed. I personally think that it may be a fuel problem. I've taken it to a couple of dealers but to no avail. So really there has been no remedy to my problem. If anyone else has had this type of problem or knows the solution, I would appreciate your comments.
