Starting at 50k miles a clunk started in the steering of my car when making turns. I took it to the dealership and it was covered under warranty. I was told then that it was a lubricating issue and that they had resolved it. About 20-30k miles later the clunk or bump as you might call it returned. I returned and again it was covered under the warranty. This time I was insistent that this be permanently fixed, because I did'nt want to have the problem after the expiration of the extended warrenty. The dealer told me that there had been a recall on this issue and it was for sure fixed. The problem returned at 110k miles and I haven't had it fixed again.

I just bought a 2006 G6 3.5L 3 days ago before seeing these problems, I bought it used from the gm dealer and it has the clunk sound when I turn, went in today to ask them to look at it and the repair shop part was closed but the sales manager I talked to said "its a common problem but not a serious one and that they would look at it Monday, but its not dangerous and nothing will happen if I keep driving it".
I have an 8 month old son to think about and now I'm getting worried for his safety since its all I have to drive..I got it used, and it had 49k miles on it but I did get the extended warranty for 3yrs 36k miles. If they won't honor that I'll just set the car on fire since I paid for the GAP insurance...and try to get something else. I do like the car A LOT but my son's safety means way more to me than a stupid car. I'll keep everyone up to date on what GM tells me Monday when I can take it in to the shop. PS if I have to torch the car I'll have pics lol, I won't let these pricks stick it to me while my wife is deployed to Iraq

As i make a left turn there is a noise that comes from the front axil area of the car. It is very irritating. This car was not manufactured very well! I had problems with a former ca produced by Nissan. There were several recalls on the car. I give them credited for acknowledging there faults. However, i would never buy another Nissan. As with Pontiac they are not owning up to there manufacturing faults therefore leaving me with the same feeling as with Nissan. I am not the only one in my area feeling this way. If Pontiac wants to redeem there standing with consumers they need to start accepting blame and fix some of there manufacturing problems. My steering isn't the only thing that has went wrong with my car. Air Compressor went out, Squeaking in the breaks, Auxiliary plugs not working...etc

Noticed this - and found it annoying, but didn't worry too much about fixing it. Got it fixed when I took my car into the dealer for the MAJOR power steering failure. They took care of it quickly and easily - but I'm really glad I sprang for the GM Extended Care warranty... zero deductible!

We purchased a 2006 Pontiac G6 4 door sedan loaded in June 2005 from John Hall Pontiac Dealership in Daytona Beach Florida. I have had this vehicle in the shop for service twice now for problems with the I-Shaft binding, a Clunking noise when turning the steering wheel. They have "fixed" the problem with lube and aligning the I-Shaft and replacing the L/S outer Tie Rod which has been nothing but a "BANDAID" approach, the last service date was 02/14/08. I am now having again for the third time, the same problem, clunking noise when turning. I called the Dealership yesterday only to find out they cannot fix this problem totally and correctly as it should have been done when this vehicle was under warranty. They will be charging me $350.00 for a new "SteeringShaft" which should have been installed when this vehicle was under warranty. I cannot understand #1 why this problem cannot be fixed under our initial 3yr-36,000 mile warranty when we purchased this vehicle new. There are currently 25,500 miles on this car. #2 I did a research and discovered there are currently 25 and possibly more complaints of this same problem on this vehicle which indicates a faulty Steering assembly. This bears further investigation with the assistance of an attorney to resolve a problem that GM/Pontiac is aware of and is doing nothing on recall of the Steering Shaft, obviously coaching Dealerships to "Bandaid" the problem and ignoring the real issue.

Yes,I'm another victim of the infamous "clunking"noise we all know too well.My steering wheel no longer will lock when I remove the key either. Also my front end makes some scary noises(rattles)when I run over small road imperfections(I wouldn't call them potholes)And after reading some of these horror stories on here,I'm deathly afraid to drive mine now.,Seeing as how they are "restructuring" (GM),they should really take to heart the needs of the consumer, after all, aren't we ultimately the ones who control their profits and success?Like someone else on here said ,they need to get rid of the corporate bean counters and start making a dependable quality car.And at the very least take responsibility when a problem does occur. This will probably be my last GM junker.

I have a 2006 Pontiac G6 and I have had more problems than I ever would have imagined. I have completely replaced the front end, ie. struts, wheel bearings, anyhign you can think of now it is the power steering. "Power Steering" comes across my stereo display so I brought it to a garage and there is no where to put power steering so not it appears it is my front bearings again which I had repaired less than a month ago. I have also had a huge hole blow in my back windshield while driving, glass flew into my back seat and it is believed to be the rear defrost. I spoke with my local dealer and they did not care, just said there are no recalls so there is nothing we can do but you can call the customer complaints line.
This is the worst car I have ever owned and will be the last GM vehicle I will owe and will make sure none of my family members own one either or for that matter anyone else I know. They have been the worst to deal with and don't reallly care once they have the vehicle sold.

Bought this car in April 2006 with 1,900 miles on odo. from GM Dealer as a used "program car." Beginning at 11,000 miles it began to clunk when turning the steering wheel at low speed; coming from steering column. To cure this repeating problem it has had two new steering racks, the steering coupling tightened to "new specs," and a new, right side tie rod replaced, and a complete new steering column, all under warranty. All of this was done under warranty and each fix took care of the noise (which was always the same; you could even feel it in the steering wheel) for 2 weeks to about 3 months. The steering column fixed it for about a year until it came back this year and a local mechanic fixed it by replacing the intermediate steering shaft. The car has also had three front wheel bearing assemblies, sway bar links and the right, front lower control arm assembly due to a worn out ball-joint!. Other than the front end being absolute junk, the rest of the car has been great. My wife is the primary driver and it is always driven on hard-top. She nor I race it. My children are both girls and have rarely driven the car. Without a doubt, this has been the worst I've ever driven since 1972...and folks wonder why GM can't compete with foreign cars. I should've pursued the lemon law while it was under warranty but, all but one fix was different for the same apparent noise.

Its really upsetting, not to mention possibly dangerous, When I apply the brakes the car shakes real bad I had the brakes replaced but it only worked Ok for a while. Also whenever I make a left turn it makes an awful clonking sound, I don;t know what to make of it, just concerns me that it could be something bad so I am afraid to drive out-of-town for fear breaking down or worse losing control at high speed. Please somebody listen to me, my warranty is long expired, I cannot afford to fix a problem that may have been caused by the car maker. It is unfair to the consumer. I feel a recall is needed.
My son also has a 2006 GT and has experienced the same problems. he was lucky his was still under warranty, and is running alright for now........

Hi Everyone,
I have been reading for the last couple years how people are having problem with their cars clunking and making popping sounds when turning the wheel. Mine has been doing it for 2 years and I just got it fixed yesterday! What a relief. The dealer has been telling me every time I brought it in that they didn't hear anything and there was nothing wrong. They were deaf in the past apparently. Well yesterday they heard it and fixed it. They lubricated the drive shaft and the sound has stopped. Lets pray it doesn't come back. Mine was covered under my extended warranty. It cost the dealer $8.80 for a lub kit to fix the car. How sad is that, people are annoyed by the car for months or years and all it took was less than ten dollars to fix it. Anyone out there having the same problem please suggest to your dealer to lub the shaft.
Hope this helps!

Till today I have to go to the dealer for this problem and after the dealer finished what he says it's done, ant their parking lot the noise comes back and keep increasing gradually.
I would ask each one of G6 owners to stand and make a complaint through:
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm
This is the only way to push Pontiac to recall the car for this steering problem
Thanks

I LOVED THIS CAR WHEN I PURCHASED IT, AND LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING THE SECOND THAT THE WARRANTY RAN OUT I WAS SLAPPED IN THE FACE. WHEN I DRIVE MY CAR AT NIGHT I FEEL LIKE I AM ALL OVER THE ROAD. WHEN I MAKE A LEFT HAND TURN I FEEL AND HEAR A THUMP NOISE, AND ITS FREAKING ME OUT. I HAVE READ THAT MANY OWNERS HAVE LOST THEIR STEERING ALL TOGETHER. WHEN I CALLED THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP HE SAID IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE MUCH BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALOT OF PONTIAC'S COMING IN WITH LUBRICATION ISSUES IN THE STEERING AND 4-5 MONTHS LATER THEY ARE RIGHT BACK IN THE SHOP FOR THE SAME THING. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. ALSO, WHEN I DRIVE AT NIGHT I FEEL LIKE MY TIRES ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE WOBBLING. I BOUGHT THIS CAR BRAND NEW WITH ONLY 2 MILES ON IT IN MAY OF 2006 AND IT HAS BEEN IN ACCIDENTS (AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN IN THE CAR) BUT FOR THE LOVE THIS HAS TO STOP. I HAVE BEEN TOLD UPON REPAIR THAT THE FRAME OF MY CAR IS GOOD TO GO, BUT I DON'T FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR NOW AT ALL. I AM SCARED TO DEATH TO DRIVE IN THE SNOW THINKING THAT MAYBE I AM GOING TO LOSE MY STEERING OR POSSIBLY HURT SOMEONE ELSE WHILE DRIVING THIS CAR. PLEASE IF ANYONE ELSE HAS THIS SAME KIND OF ISSUE THAN MAYBE WE ALL CAN DO SOMETHING TOGETHER TO GET THIS STOPPED BEFORE SOME GRIEVING FAMILY HAS TO SUE THE CRAP OUT OF GM FOR THE SH*TTY MODEL OF A CAR THEY MADE. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER THAN TO BUY ANOTHER PONTIAC. I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW CAR A FEW YEARS AGO 2003 (BRAND NEW) PONTIAC GRAND AM AND IT WAS A LEMON FROM THE START, FAULTY ROTORS ALL THE WAY TO BOILS IN THE TIRES. FINALLY I GOT OUT OF THAT CAR AND INTO ANOTHER PIECE OF SH*T. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN, PLEASE CONTACT ME AT little_pita_girl@yahoo.com

Since I was told it wasn't a harmful problem and I could wait until my next maintenance visit which happened 4/29/08 it was okay. But I still have to take off work for all of these visits to the dealership for repairs and maintenance.
We have partnered with JustAnswer to offer online auto repair help and advice from expert professional automotive technicians. You describe your steering problem or ask your question and they try to help you figure it out. The fee is typically $9 to $15, but you can offer to pay more for really tough questions. You will usually receive an answer in 10 minutes or less, and you do not have to pay anything unless you accept the answer.

Clunk sound when I turn left or right at very low speed. It started off with a very low intermittent clunk sound and gradually got louder. Since my wife drives the car she never motioned the noise, just turned the radio on louder. Presently I took the car to 2 local auto shops and both did not want to work on the car and said this is a known issue the G6 and Malibu. Also, that I was lucky that the car lasted this long before the noise started. They recommended that I take it to a deal to have the problem fixed and it was most probably the steering shaft. I'm expecting a call this afternoon from the dealer on their initial inspection and what will the repair cost.
I'll keep you updated.
