I removed the 2"x2" panel under the steering column, a few inches behind the steering wheel. stuck the left little finger up and in pushing the button in towards the steering wheel while rotating the key back to the lock position and removing. The problem is caused by a bad solenoid in the column. I cannot say how much a new solenoid would be, I chose to keep using the button. I also have chosen to sell the car this way.

Does not happen every time but is happening more and more. I have to fight with the wheel and the key and the gear shift before something finally happens
