Grand Am SE 2.4L

The front dash around the windshield vent has been cracking since approximately last spring/summer. What started as one small crack has expanded into three large ones. I've noticed the entire front dash seems to be warping, and there is now a small gap between the top of the instrument panel and the dash. I do not see any plausible fix for this problem. My primary concern regarding this problem is twofold (1) what is causing the damage, is it sun damage or is there a damaged electrical component inside the dash and (2) will this affect the electronics that are under the dash as the cracks grow? Definitely a pain, but any potential fix would cost more than the car is worth at this point, I'm sure.
