The stupid blinkers do work, but once you start using them that damn ticking in the car never shuts up. This problem actually started in 2004, but at the time there was no rhyme or reason as to when it would do it, so getting it fixed was hard as the ticking would come and go whenever it felt like it. Then nothing for about three years and then the past couple of months (now out of warranty) it's gotten really bad. So bad that the ticking was driving me insane and my husband removed the ticker. The blinkers now light up, but won't blink, so everytime you change lanes or turn you have to turn the blinkers on then off then on then off. Really annoying and unsafe when you're trying to maneuver the car and watch the road, etc.
He replaced the hazard ticker for about $25, but that didn't solve the problem. The next item to be replaced is the main part in the steering column. $125 he said, so for now, we're just turning the blinkers on then off, then on, then off.
I've done some research online and have found that this is a common Pontiac Grand Am problem, however, recalls are only through 2000.

My husband and I noticed 1 day while driving that when we turned on the turn signal, it wouldnt work. We called around and the cheapest we could find to fix the problem (a bad multi-function switch) was $350... And thats not including labor! Not having that much money to spend, if the turning signal wont work we gently hit the top of the hazards and it will usually start working. Works for now while not having the money to spend on getting it fixed.

All you have to do is hit the top of the hazard switch (GENTLY) and they will respond with 2-4 hits.
Its cheaper than replacing no?

This is such a safety issue and concern that I think Pontiac should be paying closer attention to. I never received anything about any recall and just recently heard through word of mouth that other people were experiencing the same thing with their turn signals only working sporadically. This IS a safety issue as when people behind you do not know you are turning, they can not plan accordingly. Accidents are going to happen and then Pontiac will have to listen because they are going to have lawsuits on their hands. I have never had work done because I am a student and can barely afford my oil changes much less a $300 job like this. I called Pontiac headquarters and put in my VIN number but was told that there were no recent recalls on my car. I could not speak to anyone so I will have to try calling again. Ah, the life of the corporate world. We'll see what happens.

I bought this new 2002 Grand Am when my daughter went away to college... new car no problems! The blinkers started acting up last year, although they worked more than not. The dealer said they figured out the problem and it would be $360.00 to repair. It was a bad multi-function switch. With money tight we held off on the repair. Blinkers don't work at all now... daughter has a new 2007 Mustang GT, the Grand Am is now my headache! Will log 6 more problems with this LEMON!!

I've been experiencing problems with my turn signal, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, my temporary solution to it is cumbersome and I do not recommend it, but is like this; when I'm ready to make a turn or switch lanes, I turn the lever up or down if it does not blink, I turn on my hazard light and rapidly turn it off alternately with the turn signal multifunction lever until it stays (blinking) on. I've read somewhere that there is some recall about faulty hazard switches on this vehicles along with Oldsmobile Alero and Chevy Malibus that are being replaced free of charge, but not the turn signal lever/switch, although obviously they correlate. I wonder if any other Grand Am owners have any more info on this.

I have had the same problem with my 2002 Pontiac Grand Am. I paid over $300 to have the multifunction switch replaced. April 2006 I received a letter from Pontiac stating that they will reimburse out of pocket expenses for the Hazard Switch but not the Multifunction Switch which the two parts have a direct correlation.
I contacted Pontiac as well as GM executive offices. They refused to reimburse me. GM executive offices (313-667-7153) hung up on me.

Same as # 9 here too. You would think a recall could fix this.
