The grand prix's Trac light began coming on after a sputter by the engine and the RPMs going to zero. Once the car actually shutdown completely on the highway. For some reason the car starts up fine and the RPMs begin working again after restart. I am changing the fuel filter, spark plugs, and checking the transmission. If anyone knows why this is happening please let us know.

I have had this problem happen three times, so far. The trac control light comes on, and the tach drops to zero. When I re-start the car it all resets and works fine, but it definitely is a problem. From the sounds of it it costs more to figure out what the problem is, than to just deal with it. I have yet to hear that anyone has actually figured out what the problem is.

We changed the computer and ignition module also which didn't resolve problem. Left us w/o a vehicle and cost about $500.
Once we changed the crank position sensor we haven't had any more stalling problems.
Originally we also had to take the car to the dealer when the trac off light was on. This was a serious pain.
Good luck

I'm just driving down the road and the car just dies. I wait three to five minutes and the car will start up again. The dealers in my community say call them when the car dies and they'll come and pick it up. On a Sunday!! When they're closed!!
Does anybody know or have heard of a solution that actually worked?
Thanks Art

I started seeing the TRAC light stay on with the RPM's going to zero. Seems strange because it happens when road conditions are pretty good which should not cause the TRAC light to come on. Also, the engine sounds good while running and ideling. However, every once and awhile the engine appears to want to shutdown but only for a second or two. I have an auto service working with me to try and determine what course of action to take.
If anyone is having this problem or had this problem, what are you doing or what was the solution.

Our car began giving us problem at least 6 months ago. Initially, he traction light would come on and the tach would go to 0. Then it started stalling after exhibiting the above. We took it to the dealer but was informed that we needed the trac light to be on when we got to the dealer.
We managed to get the car to the dealer when the trac light was on. They said it would be 1 of 3 things: computer, ignition module or I forget the last thing. Charged $45. Eventually, we got the computer replaced, total cost $300. Problem persisted.
Yesterday got the ignition module replaced total cost $200. We still have the problem and the garage now has the car, unsure what the problem is. Do we keep putting money in a car that is 7 years old with 80,000 miles which no one seems to be able to fix our do we cut our losses and unload it?

They told me I blew the abs module and then they fixed it and then told me that the main module for the car blew. So I paid for 2 modules that I don't think I did anything too. I love the Grand Prix and have very minor issues with it. I just don't like it when the dealer doesn't tell you the truth. They told me that a battery is what blew the abs module. I got a battery a year prior to the issue. I just think they mde more problem for the car.
